Mark Ellis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2001.
One Dream Realized

Mark J. Ellis always dreamed of becoming a police officer. At age 5, he played cops and robbers with a set of plastic handcuffs and a notepad that he used to write speeding tickets.

As he grew older, it became apparent that he had developed an affinity for the straight and narrow path. As a teenager, he lectured his older sister about getting speeding tickets, rarely went to parties and never drank alcohol, because he liked to stay in control.

By the time he joined the New York Police Department and became an officer in Transit District 4, his character was legendary.

"You couldn't get him to do anything wrong," said Officer Eric Semler, Officer Ellis's partner for three years. "He might bend a rule, but he would never break a rule. It was almost to the point where it was annoying."

But Officer Ellis, 26, who lived with his parents in Huntington Station, N.Y., did take risks. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed activities like boating, mountain biking and snowboarding.

Having realized his dream of becoming a police officer, Officer Ellis set new goals. He wanted to marry his longtime girlfriend, Stephanie Porzio. And he applied for jobs with the Secret Service and the F.B.I. After Officer Ellis's death, his parents received acceptance letters from both agencies.

I visited the 9/11 Memorial in NYC in 2016. During the tour, they asked each of us to find one name and memorize that name so we could pray over that family. I chose Mark’s name from the wall of names. My husband is a LEO in Charleston, SC and I had no idea when I chose his name that he was a Police Officer. All I had was his name. I have prayed for the Ellis family many times since then and I will continue to lift you up in prayer. Mark was a true American Hero that will never be forgotten! Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Ellis for raising such a selfless human! Always in my thoughts and prayers!

I originally wrote on this memorial page on Sept 11, 2003, and shared my story of receiving a bracelet with Mark's name on it and how it affected me. Little did I know that one day I would finally make it to New York and be able to find Mark's name on the panels at the 9/11 memorial. I was so overcome with emotion for someone I had never met, yet felt so close to after all these years. We took a tour through the 9/11 Tribute Center, whose doissants are actual survivors of the tragedy - whether 1st responders, people who survived the event, or family members of those who were lost. It's so important for us to hear the stories of those who were there and what they experienced so that we, as a nation, do not forget those who died and the families who have been affected in so many ways since. This year's 9/11 remembrance will be even more meaningful now that I've had the opportunity to visit the site and to see Mark's name for myself. I continue to pray for those who were and continue to be affected by the events of that day. God bless you all!!

After the attack my church Harvest Calvary Chapel in Riverside California sold silver bands with the victims name (donated to the families). I bought one and Mark Ellis name is on it. Each time I look at it I say a prayer for his family and friends. Yes he is in heaven with our good Lord and Savior. God bless you all ! :)

Every year I cry on this day because of the events that happened on this day 14 years ago. Mark and I shared the same name, though I spell my first name with a C. I was 27 at the time, he was 26 and we both lived in NYC. We both woke up that morning, not knowing what kind of tragic day was ahead.

I didn't know anything about Mark until one day, during the Super Bowl halftime show, I saw his name appear w/ all of the 9/11 victims. It blew me away. I then made a point to find out about this courageous man and how he risked his life to save others. I can never be the great man that he is and though we were strangers, as long as I live, you will never be forgotten. I am honored to share our name with you.

I am participating in the 9/11 memorial stair climb in San Diego, California. It is a way to honor first responders that died on 9/11. Each participant must choose a first responder to climb for - I chose Mark.

I did not know anyone who died that day, but my husband is a police officer in San Diego. He would be someone that would do whatever it took to help get others to safety. When I read Mark's biography, I was touched by honor, courage and integrity.

I did not know Mark, but I am honored to proudly wear his name during the stair climb. Prayers and thoughts to anyone that knew and loved this brave man.

I was at the memorial last week, It is still difficult to comprehend the scale of what happened but in order to pay tribute I decided to choose a single person from the many. The first name I found was Mark. I did some research and ended up here. It is a small action as there are so many names but to have chosen Mark's name by chance, to say some prayers for him and to learn more about him here I feel happy that I can now share his name with my family and friends who will in turn remember him. Best regards, Robert.

Every year on this day I remember Mark, I grew up with Mark he lived on the next block from mine since kindergarten through HS we were on the same bus and had some mutual friends. I can't say enough nice things about Mark, not one mean bone in his body, never got in trouble and never had anything bad to say. He was so easy going, quiet but a kid everyone liked and respected. I ran into him at college and he was so happy to tell me about his career and girlfriend and their plans for the future. I would never imagine in a million years I would be sitting here today writing about Mark in the past tense. I wish words can take the pain away from his family, but it can't and forever my heart and prayers will be with them.

Hello Mark...WOW...can't believe it has been 10 years. You are thought of ALWAYS and MISSED by all who knew and loved you. We STILL laugh at some of your "movie quotes", our memories keep you "present". While I KNOW you hate to be the center of attention, YOU TRULY ARE OUR HERO...NY'S HERO and AMERICA's HERO. We are ALL better for knowing you, and those who met you that fateful day in 2001 are the luckiest of all...because of your bravery and sacrifice they are safe. Your picture and story still hangs in my classroom, and every September I introduce my 8th graders to you...OUR HERO. It is NEVER an easy lesson to get through, but as 10 years approaches, it seems especially difficult. I struggle to get through the video clips with them, but it HAS to be done...they MUST NEVER forget! Our 7th and 8th graders were only 3 and 4 years old then. I KNOW you will be "with us" as we go through it, and I hope that our lesson is a proper HONOR and TRIBUTE to you and ALL who perished that day. As ALWAYS...we send you our LOVE and GRATITUDE... - Gina and the whole "ginzaloonz famigila" ;o) oxoxox

I chose Mark's name from the incredible list of those who lost their lives from the attack on 09/11/2001, and began to light a candle in my home each year on 9/11 in remembrance of Mark and all those who were affected by that horrible day. I promised myself I would never let that day and Mark's bravery be forgotten. Now, in celebration of the vindication of the death of Mark Joseph Ellis, I will also light a candle on May 1 each year as a celebration of Mark's and all Americans's triumph over that evil whose name I will never speak.

I have asked that my family carry on this vigil throughout the years to come.

To everyone whom Mark's life touched:

I received a pewter prayer bracelet from my mother shortly after 9/11/01. She wanted to get the name of an NYPD officer since my husband is an officer here in Bossier City. When she gave it to me, I was instantly filled with overwhelming emotions for someone who I had never met but I somehow was now connected to in such a personal way. I wear my bracelet for every patriotic event and on the anniversaries of 9/11. Total strangers, much like Mark is to me, often ask me who he is and why I wear the bracelet. Through my searchings on the internet, I have been able to learn a little about this great hero that died so others could live free. How proud his family, fiancee', and friends must be of Mark!

His picture is in a frame in my office. This is a constant reminder of the price we pay for freedom in this great country. My brother-in-law is serving in Iraq and my husband is also in the National Guard. Sometimes I feel that people take certain things for granted in the USA. Thank God that there are those people out there like Mark that remind us of those things.

God bless everyone that knew Mark and struggle daily with his loss. Please know that there are so many of us that did not know him that think of him and pray for him daily. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always!

Mr & Mrs. Ellis, and family,

I believe it was in October or November of 2001; I ran across a display of silver bracelets, each one engraved with a different name. On closer inspection, my heart began to ache. The names were those of the fallen police and fire personnel from the September 11th tragedy. The first NYPD band I picked up had Mark's name on it. I knew this was the one, and bought it.

Each and every day since then I have worn my band, and wondered over and over again "who is Mark Ellis" I probed forever trying to find a photo, article, or something about him. I had no luck until today (07-15-2003).

I have cried as many tears today as I did on 9-11. My respect and gratitude for Mark can not be described. There are no words to express my feelings for the sacrifice Mark has made.
All I have learned shows that Mark is, and will always be, the perfect definition of a "Police Officer", and an example to be followed by many.

Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Ellis for raising such a wonderful, giving son. You too have made a great sacrifice, and all of my thoughts, love, and prayers are with you.

For me September 11th, 2001 was the first day of the Police Academy. A day I will never forget. No one told us what was going on. I did not know until I was on my way home, called my husband, and turned on the radio in my car. I was devistated. My drive home was a tearful one. That was only the beginning.

Now almost 2 years later, I am a police officer with the City of Everman, TX. I pray every day before my tour begins that we will all be fortunate enough to return home to our families, and thank God for Mark, and many others, who have put their lives on the line, and given themselves to keep others safe.

Stephanie,
I cannot imagine being in your shoes. I have been married for almost 5 years now to a Fort Worth Police Officer. I cannot imagine my life without him. I cannot imagine enduring the fear, pain, and grief that you must have felt then, and, I am sure, continue to feel.
I just wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, and always will be.

Though I may not know you all, I will always remember you and Mark for all you have sacrificed. Thank you so much.

Eternally greatful, Elizabeth

Mark,

As we marked the 1st anniversary of 9/11, I went to ground zero along with our family and several officers from your district, together we placed a bouquet of roses with a card I made for all of us to wear in your honor. (Don't worry I used a nice picture) I also left you a flag pin from little Willie, I just want you to know how much I miss you every day and would give anything to have you back with us but I know you are in a better place and that we will be together again one day. You were my cousin and my friend and I can't tell you enough how proud of you I am. You are in my thoughts and prayers every day. Your fellow officers and friends were so good to us that day and have been all along you would be proud to know that they have done everything they can to help us through this ordeal. Also know that we will always be there for Stephanie and her family and she is and always will be a part of our family. I miss and love you more than words can say I was and still am proud to have you as my cousin.

Love always,

I gave my son, Michael, who is also a police officer, a bracelet with Mark's name on it and have made a commitment to offer prayers up for Mark's family and friends. (I just discovered that Mark comes from my home town, Huntington Station.) May the Lord God bless you and keep you, May He make His Face to shine upon you. May He hold you in His loving arms, and may you find peace and comfort in His love. Amen

I know this is a guest book for people to give their thoughts and prayers, so I thought I would give mine as well. I knew Mark very well, basically because he was/is my cousin. Becoming a police officer was very important to him and I was so proud of him at his graduation. For those of you who didn't know him, he was a loving, caring, and wonderful young man. He would do anything for you, all you had to do was ask. I just want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers and constant support for my entire family.

We'll miss Mark more than words could ever express.

We love you,

Noel, Willie and little William

I too wear a Blue Bracelet in honor of Mark. This horrific event effected us, but not in the sadness & pain it did to Marks family. The bracelet lets all know that I personally think & pray for his family everyday. I too have a son named Mark (23), so it brings it eveb closer. I would truly like to know more about him, all I could find out from other officers was he was in TD 4. If anyone could let me know a little more about his short heroic life it would be appreciated. God Bless, Sharon A.

My 17 year old daughter wears a bracelet with Mark's name on it. To his family, friends and fellow officers, you are all always in our hearts and prayers. Marc made the greatest of sacrifices for his country. He is truly the finest example of a true hero and he will never be forgotten. May God Bless all those he left behind.

"And there was a great vocie from the throne room saying 'now the kingdom of God is with man, and they shall be His children, and He will be their God. And God shall wipe away all the tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, nor shall there be any more pain, for the old order of things has passed away' "

We are extremely sorry for our nations great loss of Mark. We thank him for protecting others as a police officer. Such a profession comes with a brave heart. May Mark's courage, life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry deeply with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
