Ramon Suarez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2001.
Ultimate Public Servant

Carmen and Ramon Suarez were all dressed up for a party when they saw a few teenagers pummeling a man across the street from their home in Ridgewood, Queens. Mrs. Suarez's husband, a New York City police officer, gave her one of his looks and took off running, dress shoes and all.

Minutes later a patrol car found Officer Suarez and the teenagers he had apprehended. "I don't know how my husband used to do this," Mrs. Suarez said. "He must have had wings."

Officer Suarez could run like the wind because, at 45, he still worked out twice a day in the gym. He also ran, and coached the track team at his daughter Jillian's elementary school. And he was a physical fitness guru who chided those who sinned.

"He would tease you and say, 'Instead of having that doughnut why don't you have a PowerBar or something," said Officer Suarez's partner of 11 years, Officer Steven Rentas. He said Officer Suarez was a perfectionist about his uniform, his appearance, his performance on the job.

On the morning of Sept. 11, Officer Suarez was on transit duty at the Delancey Street subway station. He commandeered a cab and rushed to the World Trade Center, where he was photographed helping people out of one of the buildings. "Ray basically symbolized the essence of what the Police Department is looking for in its officers," Officer Rentas said.

I met you on MTA property as I was a token booth clerk. As i watched the Museum Memorial coverage today 5/15/14, I remembered you and all the others who lost their lives. When your family (they were one of families speaking during the coverage), was shown speaking of you, i had just told my son who was 10 at the time about you and they were shown on the TV. I nearly fainted. May your rest in peace Officer Suarez, and be gloried in our LORD and SAVIOR.

As I read so many beautiful entries of strangers that I have never had the pleasure of getting to know....I take this time to thank you all for your prayers and your kind words and for always remembering my brave and beloved husband....a question I ask myself everyday, how do I do it and go on...my only answer is our daughter Jillian, I keep on living for HER..my heart will never recover the loss of my husband Ray not a day goes by that I don't think of him or long for his embrace, I miss him so much that it hurts to my inner soul. Our daughter Jillian misses him more than I could ever imagine, she has grown to be such a beautiful young lady that he would be so proud of...she has his spunk and is fearless just like he was. She has missed him during her most important events even more...not a day goes by that we don't talk about him or remember him. She is now following his footsteps and is majoring in criminalist. He will be so proud of her especially during this month as she started her internship in the Forensics Division, but I know that he is smiling down on her and is with her all the time, because that is what guardian angels do...they protect their loved ones. May you rest in peace love of my life, and I know that one day we will meet again. I love you to enternity! Again my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your prayers and I am proud to say that he touched so many lives with his heroism.

Although my family and I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Ramon Suarez you have a very special place in our heart. You see you have the same name as my deceased father Ramon Suarez who was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War who preceded your death passing away in September of 1991. I first learned of Officer Ramon Suarez's death when the news agencies where posting the names of those who were killed during this horrible event in Sept of 2001. This past April 2013 my 13yr old daughter Alyna and I went on a trip with her 8th grade class to NYC and we had a stop at the 911 memorial. It was my mission to find the engraved name of Officer Ramon Suarez among the 3 thousand names engraved in the memorial. Something or some unseen force lead me directly to Ramon Suarez's name within 30 seconds we had found it. It was a very emotional time. Our hearts go out to the Suarez family and we offer our sincere condolences. Please know that your dear loved one touches the heart of strangers from across the country that have never had the pleasure of meeting this brave hero.

...for numerous years, and continue to do so, upon recieving, shortly after September 11, I have proudly worn a navy blue baseball-style cap, bearing the letters NYPD embroidered on the front, as I walk away, one can read the back of the cap "In Memory of Officer Suarez". There had been times, one would ask about the cap, I reply "nothing is stronger than a bond of law enforcement, both sworn and civilian", and then they respect my space. Wearing the cap, keeps me "in check", of the freedom I have, because of the strength from Officer Suarez, coupled with all the extended law enforcement agencies throughout the United States, coupled with our military branches, very thankful for each given moment. To Carmen Suarez and Jillian, and to Ramon Jr and Sophia, always remember, from your dreams, you can hug forever, because memories made in love, can never be taken away. Take care of yourselves for each other, be safe, and may God bless.

I met Ray in Dist 4 in 1993. I was the Squad boss & he was an FTO. he trained my wife though at the time we had not yet started dating. He was class guy that when you spoke to him you knew that he was a man to be respected by the way he carried himself. I know that my wife has lost a lot of sleep & shed a lot of tears on his tragedy. I remember feeling a sense of loss when he died. The way he lived his life was bigger than the uniform he wored. May he rest in Peace.

Ray it seems only like yesterday...when I saw you walk out of the room on that horrific morning on your way to work, not knowing what was to behold you on that day and to the rest of your family. You show to be a selfless man with heroic act. Many lives were saved due to your heroism and your bravery. You were the perfect example of Cops Cop. Its been now Ten years and I still can't believe that you are gone. Days go by and years and I can't seem to move on and give my heart to anyone, I sometimes wish that I could dream with you, and you give me a sign telling me what to do...but I never have had a dream with you..or better yet I probably just can't remember any dream. My heart still aches and sometimes I just cry myself to sleep and ask "why". Me and your beautiful little girl Jill misses you so much, she has grown to be such a beautiful young lady that you will be so proud of..she is now in College and I am now alone missing her and you. My beloved husband and friend you will forever live in me until we meet again. I will love you forever and until eternity!!!! May God bless you and may you rest in PEACE!
Will love you forever, your wife and daughter Carmen and Jill

Once again I will like to thank everyone, friends, family and co-workers for all your dedication and your support to our family. Words can not explain how much I miss my dad. However, to make 9/11 a smoother transition, I always celebrate the life we had with him. The great memories I share with my dad helps me cope during this tragic time of the year. God Bless all the others who's life were impacted by 9/11 as well.

To My Dear Cousin Ray:

I will never forget the words you spoke to me and Sharon a few days after my brother Joey passed away, "Even though you brother has passed, see in me the brother you just lost." I have never forgotten those words. You are truly missed by everyone in your family. Your mom has had a difficult time coping with losing you. Your uncle Jose holds you dear to his heart. You will always be missed but we are proud of what you did that day. Thank you God for giving us such a great and honorable man. Ray, may God hold you in his bossom.

I did not know Ramon too well. He was one of the older kids from the building we lived in. I remember he was one of the good kids. As years went on, Ramon always took time to spaek to ma as if I were his best friend. I thank God for Heroes like Ray. I am proud of him, not only for what he did on September 11, 2001, but for who he was. God bless your soul, old friend, and God bless all of you that he left behind.

I can't believe it's been 7 years since we lost our brother Ray. Ray, Sha, Joe, Richie and myself all worked at Task Force. We had a great time working together, our roll calls were hallarious...in large part to Rays sense of humor. Many people were scared to go to roll call as to not fall prey to Ray's jokes, but he kept everybody loose, he always would be there when you needed help, it was just a pleasure to work with you Ray. We love and miss you brother.

It was a sincere pleasure to attend Jillian's Sweet Sixteen this weekend. Ray would have been so proud of his little girl. She really looked lovely, and she has grown into her fathers image. I as a father of a little girl realize that a young girls Sweet Sixteen is a right of passege in their lives. It killed me not being able to see my friend and partner change his daugthers shoe's during the ceremony. But I felt the love when her uncle Eddie stepped up in Ray's place. Eddie is a Good Man. Its been 7 years Ray and it still hurts, I saw how we all still miss you that night Ray. May God continue to bless Carmen for the fine job she has done raising Jillian. Your wife and daugther still continue to represent you with pride and Love. Your family is fine Ray, Rest well partner.

Thank You all for all the support that you have given to me and my daughter Jillian. Our daughter Jillian's Sweet Sixteen was on Sat. the 13th . Ray would have been beaming to see how breathtaking his little girl looked. She was absolutely gorgeous! Ray always did say that she was going to grow up to be beautiful and he was right! Her 16th candle was dedicated to him along with a slide show of him. It was heartbreaking to see her read his candle hysterically crying. There was not a dry eye at the hall. But she manage to say everything that she needed which shows she is and always will be daddy's little girl. Her strength is his strength and I am so blessed to have a part of him living through his daughter! We will always love you and miss you forever! We wish you were there! love you forever

June 26, 2007

My most heartfelt prayers go out to all our families who lost in this cowardly attack on our nation. I worked with Ray back in 1991. Later; I was Transferred to District # 1. Working with him was like working with someone who could know your move and react. We always knew what the other one was going to do. The last I heard from him was he was going to try for Pompano Beach Police so I shocked me he'd stayed and come to his untimely end. I know today if I was with him that day; I too would not be here now; he'd take one tower, I'd take the other one. We always thought like that putting others first and ourselves second.

I wish this book did not have to be in existance - as it is proof of our ever changing, and increasingly dangerous world. The peace that Officer Ramon Suarez dedicated his life to, was taken from him and many, many others on that day, as frozen citizens watched in numbness. I watched my daughter take notes as fast as she could as the stream of information flashed across the screen of our TV. She cried and wanted to help in any way that she could. We all did. She is now dedicating her life to serve as a Fire Fighter/EMT. Another daughter is serving in the Air National Guard, and my son is serving in the Army.

The prayers for all the families that lost a loved on that day have not vanished from our hearts. I hope each of us will always remember the harm that can come to the men and women in uniform . . . in a simple flash of the day.

These special people have special hearts that beat not only to keep themselves alive, but their hearts beat to protect and help any one one of us that may cross their path. May God bless every one of them and keep them in his peaceful embrace.

In 1999, I decided to leave NY and move to Florida. I worked on Chamber Street 8 blocks from the trade center. I'm a former marine and a father of two beautiful children. I'm currrently a nurse and work in the correctional field of medicine. Your dad is a special person and he saved many more lives than you can imagine. He was a public servant and a man of god. I'm proud to say that he is my hero too. Without men like your dad and husband, this world would not be a pretty place. In matthew Chap6 verse 21, For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. His heart was in the right place. God Bless You both.

My Dear Friends,

Thank you all for all your support, and the love you have showed to us. I have been so overwhelmed since that horrific day from all the kindness and the condolences of so many americans along with their support, Its been a while that I haven't been on his page, it takes alot of courage from me to get on it, my tears haven't stopped flowing since that horrific day. I guess sometimes is true what they say, you truly could die from a broken heart. I am still here because of my daughter Jillian, because if it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't have made it this far. She is my strengh. A part of me died with Ray that day. The Love that we shared was more than anyone could understand. The love he had for me was truly a blessing. He was a kind and caring loving husband God granted me 10 beautiful years with this wonderful man along with giving me the blessing of his beautiful child that will always live in him. She is so much like her dad, I see him always in her, her mannerisms, her face, her smile, and most of all the beautiful dimples that he always showed when he smiled. Its been almost 5 years, and I still say to myself how do people move on. I still have not had the courage not even to look the other way and attempt to date. My love for Ray was so huge that I can't see myself with anyone else , but him. This year is going to be harder than ever because his little girl graduates from 8th grade, we always talked about her graduation and what we would do for her. I certainly will have a big party for her, Its what her dad would have wanted for her , his love for Jillian always gleamed in his eyes when he looked at her, they had such a special bond, and its so sad that she had only nine years of her life with her dad. I know that we all should be proud of his selflessness and that we are, we beam with pride, but I would trade the honor of an american hero to have him here with us. Thank you all once again my fellow americans I forever will be grateful for all your well wishes and support there are no words that could express my undying gratitude. May God bless all of you and your families. and always remember to not go a day without telling your family 'I LOVE YOU' God bless you Ray , I will love you forever. Your wife carmen suarez

Dear Carmen and Jillian,

Not a day goes by that I don't think of you girls and pray that you continue to find the strength to carry on. Those of us who knew Ray personally know that he was your hero everyday. The last time I saw Ray was at Jillian's Birthday party the weekend before 9/11. I was in a rush when I left and I didn't get to say good-bye to Ray...if I only knew. I hope that Ray knew that I admired and respected him. He was always a great person to talk to...even if the conversations sometimes lasted for hours...LOL. We shared a committment to children and Ray often stopped by our Girl Scout Meetings to talk to the girls about the importance of safety, being drug-free and always respecting themselves. The girls enjoyed having him stop in...especially Jillian, the pride was evident in her beautiful brown eyes. She was truly his little princess and the bond they shared shouted at all who could see. The strength and courage that you two have shown is a true testament to Ray and I know he is proud of his girls. I am proud to have known him and to know you.

-Always in my heart

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Suarez. Myself being married to an officer I know the anguish and despair the family felt on the morning of 9/11. The last time I saw Ray I was 5 months pregnant with my first child and he asked me if I knew what I was having, I didnt know at the time. But to answer his question my husband and I had a beautiful baby girl. Officer Suarez, your presence will be greatly missed. Not a day goes by that I dont shed tears for all who died and for all who made the ultimate sacrafice so many of us can make it home and be here today. May God Bless you. May your family someday find peace and know that you help save so many lives and for that we are all eternally grateful.

Today is 9/9/02 & I saw a story about Ray Suarez on the Ch 4 News. I never knew his name but I can clearly remember his face because on 9/11/01 he was one of the men that helped me to safety when I emerged from Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. I had just walked down 99 floors and Ray Suarez helped me to the street & I remember telling a cameraman to get the camera out of my face & P.O. Suarez said to me "No let them film you so your family will know that you are OK". I also recall him going into an ambulance and getting me water & reassuring me that everything was going to be OK - he said "You made it out - you are OK".

I thank you Ray Suarez - for helping me & all the others you helped to safety on that horrific day. May your family take pride in knowing that YOU ARE A GUARDIAN ANGEL. May your soul rest in peace.

To the Suarez Family:

I did not know Ramon, but my husband Jimmy worked with him in District 33 for 4 years as his partner. To this day, he is still heartbroken that he was taken from us and he still cries when he remembers things that they did together. God bless you and keep you safe.

My favorite cousin RAY,

I shall never forget you and the great times we had growing up together on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan and the great party weekends in San Juan. You will always be my soulmate. My little kids never had a chance to meet you but, they now know everything you stood for and shall never forget you. My family and I attended your beautiful memorial. We shall never forget you, RAY.

Love always, your favorite cousin,

RAMON SUAREZ IS THE TYPE OF PERSON MANY ONLY DREAM ABOUT BEING LIKE. HE'S AN AMERICAN HERO, ONE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND OURSELVES TO LOOK UP TO. IT'S SAID THAT PICTURES TELL A THOUSAND WORDS, AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN MORE EVIDENT THAN THE ONE OF OFFICER SUAREZ SAVING THE LIFE OF A WOMAN FROM THE WTC, IT DID NOT SEEM TO BE FEAR IN HIS EYES, ONLY COURAGE, AND PRIDE IN WHAT HE WAS DOING. TO CARMEN I HOPE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO STAY STRONG ALTHOUGH EVERYTHING YOU ARE GOING THROUGH GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO JUST FALL APART. AND TO OFFICER SUAREZ'S DAUGHTER'S WE OWE YOU OUR NEVER ENDING GRATITUDE FOR WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN TO US, YOUR FATHER AN AMERICAN HERO.

I worked at the World Trade Center and I was there the day of. I'm sooo sorry to hear about Ray. I ran across his picture on the internet and was pretty shocked. I dated a good friend of his "Jose" and Ray was always there for me during the rough times. He was a great friend to me and to Jose and he will surely be missed. I only wish I would have seen him there. I'm sure he would have comfort me towards safety.

TO THE SUAREZ FAMILY,

THERE IS NOT A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DONT THINK OF OFFICER SUAREZ.

I TAKE THE "F" TRAIN EVERY DAY AT DELANCY STREET. MY HEART CRIES EVERY MORNING THAT I WALK DOWN THOSE STEPS AND NOT SEE HIM THERE STANDING, SMILING AND SAYING GOOD MORNING TO EVERY ONE.

HE IS OUR HERO...AND I KNOW THAT AS LONG AS I LIVE,,,I WONT FORGET THE ANGEL THAT LOOKED OVER ME AT DELANCEY STREET.

MAY GOD BLESS HIM AND HAVE HIM IN HIS GLORY.

My Dearest Family,

It is my prayer to meet you. I unfortunately never had the opportunity. I am Aunt Santa's oldest grand-daughter. I am so heart broken over this tragedy. Although I did not know Raymond, I know his goodness will be with us all the days of our lives. He is a hero and I pray that you may have some peace in knowing this. I am at a loss for words. Please know you are in our prayers.

Sincerely,

I never had the opportunity to meet Ramon, but my grandmother, Santa Fitzhugh in North Carolina, is his Aunt. I have spoken over the phone in the past with Marina, Ramon's mother in Puerto Rico, and I know from her kind voice that Ramon will be missed everyday. My grandmother lost her son last year and now Marina has lost hers, I only wish that I could do more to help with the pain that all is going through. What a shame...

I will like to thank the great american people for having my family in their prayers. The amount of support is over whelming and well deserve for a courage man like my dad. He was and excellent friend, grandfather and dad and I will never forget that. My dad was always with me and my daughter in good and bad. I am so happy that I've got to share the best 27 years of my life with some one so special to me, my dad, an american hero.

As with all the Portraits of Grief, my heart just broke upon reading about such a loss of life. This one about Officer Suarez particularly hurt however, as it described how he raced to the devastation and was photographed helping people out of that hell. To think about all those who perished that day, those like Ramon Suarez, who were so devoted to public service ... to HUMANITY...those who did not even stop to contemplate their own safety that terrible morning. I only hope the Suarez family and his friends can glean some comfort in the fact that their loved one was such a noble man. There were many noble men and women that day and to me, Ramon Suarez exemplifies that spirit.

I knew Ramon is his younger days. We took up the Martial Arts together. I was a sad day to hear that he is now gone. He was a wonderful Dojo Brother. He will be miss.

I, too, wear a mercy band with Ramon's name on it. I wanted to pick a police office, because my son is a police officer, and I wanted someone with a Hispanic name.

A friend found this web site for me and printed out a picture of Ramon. I wear my bracelet daily, just as I wore a POW braclet many years ago. One difference is that this one will not be coming off.

I look forward to coming to New York City to see first hand the devastation, but most of all to connect in some way with what happened on a more personal level.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ramon Suarez. May you find some measure of peace in this lifetime. Love, Pam

I have been a New Mexico State Police Officer for 14 years and have seen many tragic situations and deaths; but none like I saw on 9/11. I watched in horror and disgust as the news reports rolled in that day and the towers that I once stood atop crumbled. My prayers are with all the families who lost loved ones in this horrific attack. I just visited the Mercy Band site and picked Ramon's name for the braclet that I will proudly wear in remebrance of a fellow police officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice, like many Officers from my own department whom I have known. I will pray for his family each day that I wear this band. May it serve as a constant reminder to me the reasons why I put the uniform on and why I will always fight for justice and peace.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Once again, as I have every day since I received a Mercy BAND with Officer Suarez' name on it, I'm visiting this page. And once again, I'm sitting here at a loss for words.

The WTC attack was horrendous, but nothing brought it closer to home than when I stood in the middle of the jewelry store where I bought my BAND, and read Officer Suarez' name on it. I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach and wanted to vomit. The feeling has persisted, every time I look at my bracelet. He was a man willing to give up his life to save others, but he should not have died this way.

I want to express my sincere condolences to his family, and thank them for sharing him with us, the people of the USA. I want to thank them for the ultimate sacrifice their loved one made in trying to protect us. I want to tell them that they are in my prayers on a daily basis.

Lord,

I pray for Officer Suarez' family. I pray for peace at this time of sorrow, I pray for patience during this time of uncertainty, and I pray for comfort at this time of great pain.

Lord, I pray for a forgiving heart at a time when all I want to do is hate.

I pray for all the families who are suffering at this time: the victims, the survivors, the rescue workers. I pray for the people ministering to them. I pray for our country and for our President.

I thank you Lord, for heroes, like the officers of the NYPD and the FDNY, and those who so heroically gave their lives in the air on United Flight 93, to save those of us on the ground. I thank you for the unknowing heroes of the other airline crashes, Pentagon and WTC, who died because of the freedon we are allowed as citizens of the USA.
I thank you that I live in a country where I am free to practice my religion of choice.

Lord give us peace and hope at such a dark time in our countries history.

Amen.
