Christopher Lunder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2001.
Welcome to Club Lunder
Christopher Lunder found cause for celebration in life itself, so much so that with the strong encouragement of his wife, Karen, he converted their home in Manasquan, N.J., into Backyard-Barbecue Central. He babied the propane- gas grill. He built the pond and stocked it with large goldfish. He even designed the built-in pool.

Friends would come to join in the celebration, so many friends: from high school on Long Island, from college in Florida, from Cantor Fitzgerald, where he worked as a bond broker ‹ all mingling together at the home dubbed "Club Lunder."

"Now they're all friends," Karen Lunder said. "He just loved to entertain."

Last summer he renewed his commitment to fun by buying a 37-foot boat. It was christened "KC," an appropriate name given that Karen and Christopher had been together for so long, with a decade-long courtship and the wedding in 1997. The boat's potential for entertainment ‹ treating clients to rides, commuting on summer weekends with Karen ‹ was only just beginning to be explored. "He worked hard, he played hard, he liked the best of the best ‹ and he was so cute." Karen Lunder said. Between sobs she added: "And he left me with a beautiful place."

I remember the cute little blonde boy who was my neighbor on Harbor Circle in Centerport. I was 10 years older than Christopher. It broke my heart to see he was lost on 9/11. I remember his sister Eileen and his parents Ed and Maureen who knew my parents Betty and Larry ReShore. After all these years I just wanted the family to know I have been thinking of them. I wrote about the Christopher Lunder Memorial at The Knox School on this site a couple years ago and received a letter from Maureen Lunder. Inside the letter was a few pictures of Christopher and some of his Knox friends. After a few years I happened to come across the letter and thought I should post the pictures in Christopher's memory. ~Giselle Vittor

I never got to know Christopher but he went to the school that I now go to, Knox. I have heard so many great things about him and it hurts to know about all of the good things he had worked for is now all gone. Every 9/11 at Knox we have ceremony. Everyone gets either a red or white carnation and after a few speeches and songs preformed by teachers and students we put the flowers at the foot of his memorial. The memorial is such a beautiful tree with a plaque and all. Rest in peace Christopher. ~ Giselle Vittor

The Lunder name is a surname that one does not hear often. My heart go out to you as the parents and I think of your and your son every Sept. 11th and many more times through the year. My mother lost her daughter and was never quite the same, so I can somewhat understand your loss. Prayers & good thoughts are always there for you & your wife. I thank you for letting me know your feelings with my comment. You are not alone; but must feel it. Eva Lunder

Its 12 years later but I still can't believe it I see my cousin when I watch Chandler from friends re runs

He was the most perfect person I met. He was smart, so interpersonal, loving to all he met. He heard I had a possible issue like he had with a kidney stone and he called me on a Sunday to check on me. Our prayers in heaven. He had the best of times and a very loving Wife and family

My last name is Lunder, which was my father's name. Every city I move to for a job, I check the phone book to see if there's any or many Lunder's listed & find that this name is rarer than most.

My father was borne in 1917 and came to the USA with his parents from the Germany/Austria-Hungary region and his full name was Johann Jacob Lunder.

If or even if you're are not a distant relative, I want to express my sorrow from him being at the WTC when the world was changed with the act(s) of terrorism hit the USA. Thank you and my thoughts are with your family.

Yesterday marked the 10 year Anniversary of 911.
We Lost so many people that Horrific & Surreal Day.
I've gotten to know your Family through the years and BELIEVE that it was "YOU" who bought Us Together.
I Love to Listen to your Mom when she talks about you.
So many funny stories. This day wasn't any different from the other years as far as Emotions. You are so MISSED. yesterday, New York had revealed a Memorial to all of you who have Lost your Lives to Evil doings. The Positive out of all this is that now we have somewhere to go to visit you all, Our "Fallen ANGELS"....... If you see my cousin Nicky can you tell him we LOVE him and MISS him so much! GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR "BEAUTIFUL" Family. 0x0x0x0x0x

I would like to send my sincere condolences to the entire Linder family. I attended the Knox School with Chris and always found him to be a warm, sincere and caring person. I found out he passed in the attacks only a couple of years ago while at a Knox event and it was a real shock. Everyone who knew Chris, loved Chris. He will be in my thoughts for the rest of my life as well as those of the Knox students who were fortunate enough to have Chris touch their lives.

Today I attended a presentation of Mozart's "Requiem" in Lansing, Michigan as part of the national "Rolling Requiem Project" in honor and remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001. Communities across the country in different time zones, each sang the "Requiem" at 3:00 PM, culminating in Hawaii. I was moved by the inspired performance of this great music and grateful to be part of a national observance. However, an added feature that made it more personal was the inclusion in each program of the name of one of the victims. The name in my program was Christopher E. Lunder. Wanting to know more about "my" person, I went to the internet when I got home. I have read about Chris and learned what a special person he was, a leader in just about every area in which he was involved, liked by all who knew him, and loved and admired by many friends and family members. Being a boat person myself, I can imagine the excitement and pride he must have felt when he got his cruiser. I know that there will always be a huge hole in your hearts. But know that there are many of us out here who care and have not forgotten.

Sincerely,

Ed Smith

Chris was a classmate of mine at Oldfield Middle School. I was 13 and madly in love with him. I remember going to all his wrestling matches and sitting in on his practices waiting for the late buses to arrive. He was such an amazing boy at 13 and i only wish we had kept in touch when he went to Holy Family. He was so special. I remember how his eyes would sparkle and light up a room every time he smiled. It was infectious.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family on this day of remembrance. God bless you all.

Dear Mr and Mrs Lunder,
When we were young I was very good friends with Chris and David until I moved away. Those two boys were inseparable. I remember your family with great fondness. You were all so close and I loved sleeping over your house. I am very sorry about Chris. As a recently retired NYPD Lieutenant I am well aware of September 11. Having known your family as well as i did as a youngster I know everyday is difficult but as I remember well when we went to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, you are also a very spiritual family. You will see Chris again, he is waiting for you and will be there to greet you. I have great memories of Chris and David, and I smile when I think of the fun we had together as children. Thank you both for the memories and bringing up such a wonderful person.

It's so hard to imagine that seven years have passed since that horrific and surreal day. It feels like yesterday. Emotions full of grieving, sadness that leaves one's Heart full of Emptiness and pain. Today, on this seventh year anniversary my husband Paul & I were with the Lunder Family. My cousin Nicky Pietrunti along with Chris had worked on the 104th floor of the North Tower. I feel a spiritual connection as I/we feel as though Chris and Nicky brought us all together.
I haven't had the pleasure to meet Karen, but heard and read words that touched my heart. GOD BLESS the Angels that were made this day seven years ago. I believe that they're all looking down on us ...our Hero's......our loved ones. As I'm with the Lunder Family and hear stories of Chris, I feel Honored to be in their presence. I Love them as though they're my own family. God bless You Karen, God Bless the Lunder Family. God Bless Chris. God bless Nicky and all our 'Angels' of this day. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Karen,

I don't believe we've met but I attended Stetson as well and was a big fan of Boy Lunder. I always admired his easy way and smiling face. What a great guy!

I was shocked and saddened when I heard he was in the towers on 9/11. I ran into Bob Mugavero a couple of years ago and he related the news. Bob, Brad, and the gang really loved the Boy and I hope that love brings you peace.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I'll never forget the Boy Lunder.

Karen:

Words fail me. I don't know if you recall, but you and I spoke many times back in 1994/95 when Chris was trading the short bills at Deutsche Bank and I was trading the long-dated bills. I'll never forget those days... I used to call Chris "Shortpants" because he was a rookie. He called me "Longpants" in return. I was 10 years his senior. You may or may not remember at the time I was dating a German girl (whom I subsequently married) called Korinna, or "Koko". Chris, who knew about half a word of German, would always try to listen to my conversations with Koko and would practice his newly-learned German whenever she called if he picked up the incoming call. I don't think you could ever say he reached the point of fluency in German (understatement!!), but, in his own inimitable way, he mastered "Omomom" (strictly "Umarmung", which means "Hug") and "Dickes Bussi" (which means "Big Kiss").

I hope you and he shared lots of "Omomoms" and "Dickes Bussis" in your short time together.

Nothing I can say or write will bring him back. And nothing I can say or write will ever properly reflect the magnitude of the loss that we symbolize in the simple phrase 9/11.

All I can say is: my life was richer for knowing him, and my life is the poorer for the loss of him. That must be scant consolation. But it is all I can offer. May God bless you and support you in your grief.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you on this day that the nation shares your pain. I was in the same Pike pledge class as Mark DePass. I received word from Shauna Fisher (Reeves) that Chris worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and my heart sank. Everyone I know had a tie to someone that touched their soul. I can look back at my days at Stetson and feel the warmth and comraderie that Chris was such a part. Our lives are simply so fragile that everyday should be lived carefree and with clarity. And when it is all said and done and we make our mark in this world, we all simply go to a better place where we can barbecue and shuck oysters with our friends and families. God bless Karen.

Dear Karen,

As the one year anniversary nears, Melanie and I just want you to know that you are in our hearts and prayers. We think of you very often, wondering how you are doing.

Chris was a blessing to know. My college years would not have been the same without knowing him. Chris had that great reassuring smile. He was a very caring and funloving person.

There are many people you meet in a lifetime and he was one of those rare ones that made a lasting impression.

I remember my last conversation/seeing him like it was yesterday. There he was standing in the Wobbly Barn, smiling at us (Minnow and I) until we noticed. The three of us had a great time talking and joking with one another. I cherish that memory.

If you ever need anything, please let us know. My entire family, my parents and Grandfather pray for you. Also, all of us Pikes pray for you too. May God bless you and ease your pain.

Love,

Karen;

As we approach the 1 year anniversary of Sept. 11th, I wanted to send you my deepest sympathies for your loss. Simply put, he was a great man that I always enjoyed seeing back in our PKA days at Stetson. I don't know if you know this, but I have spent the last 10 years serving in the United States Air Force, and I can assure you that his passing is not in vain. I want you to know that we are EXTREMELY good at what we do and our dedication is unmatched and will not waiver. Please know we will never forget, and it is people like Chris that give us all strength and purpose. My prayers are with you.

Karen,

There will never be enough words, thoughts or sentiments to fill your loss. I was very saddened when I learned that Chris was gone, yet, I could not muster enough courage to let you know that my prayers are with you always.

When all this was happening I first thought of Chris and you. I used to work with you, and I remember the times Chris would call and just crack jokes. I really liked that. He was always one to put a smile on anyone's face.

Karen, I'm truly sorry for your loss. But I know you are a strong person and you will go on.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Karen

I read the Memorial to Chris in the recent Stetson Alumni Magazine - up until that day I did not know anyone who was directly affected by the tragedy - all of the emotions of that time came flooding back. I am not sure if you remember me - I was a pledge with Delta Delta Delta in 1989. Since graduating in 1993 I have been living in Auckland, New Zealand. It was difficult being in a foreign country when all you want to do it go home and help where you can, but you can't. Remembering you from Stetson with your bubbly and warm personality, I am sure that you have a wide support group and hope there are a few Tri-delts there too! I just wanted to let you know that someone in the little corner at the bottom of the world is thinking of you. God Bless!

Karen,

I remember how shocked and saddended I was to hear that Chris was in the WTC. I have prayed for your comfort as you deal with his loss. I still reflect on our carefree days at Stetson University and the fun times at the Pike house. Mike and Laura Garguillo have given me a number of updates. We all miss Chris. Our time on earth is a moment in time compared to eternal life. I know we will all see Chris again. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Karen,

I was so saddened by the loss of Chris but so enjoyed your comments here. Chris was someone that I cannot remember seeing when he didn't have a small on his face!

Crista and I had a bittersweet time remembering college and fraternity activities with all of you.

Dear Karen,

I read about Chris in the Stetson alumni magazine. I didn't know you or him personally, but since Stetson is such a small place, I knew of both of you. Your cousin Jeff Bittenbinder was one of my RAs. I was shocked to hear of the news and want to send my condolences to you and your/Chris's families. God bless.

It sounds like Christopher celebrated life. The club lunder sounds like a wonderful place to help him celebrate life with so many people he cared for. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Christopher. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Karen,

I remember the first time I met Chris. Mark, Bobby, Chris and I played golf together in Montauk. I thought he was a quiet, shy guy. Couldn't have been more wrong, huh? He was the funniest, wittiest, most hilarious guy I have ever known. Little did I know that his quiet, shy side was just his way of delivering the funniest lines ever. His one-liners on the desk would be copied by all of the guys and Mark said that Chris kept them entertained constantly. I guess that was the essence of Chris - "the entertainer" - the best host, the best cook, the best listener, the best everything. I will miss him tremendously and I will miss the part of you that he took with him. Someday I hope we can find the parts of us that are missing, and it might not be until we see our husbands again that that happens, but know that I will never leave your side and will be here for you for the rest of our lives. They made their journey together and they would want us to finish our journeys here together as well.

I love you and will be here always.

A magazine I subscribe to, CosmoGIRL! had a great idea. Pick a name off of the lost victims' list and tell their loved ones what you feel for them. I cannot imagine what you are going through. I live near DC and the Pentagon collapse really hit home. I am very sorry for your loss. Heaven was missing angels, and Mr. Lunder filled a spot.
