Michael Boyle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2001.
No Excuses for Him
He was off duty the morning of Sept. 11, but Michael Boyle, a firefighter with Engine Company 33 in Manhattan, jumped on the truck anyway when the alarms sounded.

"He cared a lot about the Fire Department," said his younger sister, Jeanne Boyle. "He was very simple in his ideas, but complex in his actions. And he could endure pain like no one I've ever known.

"I would ask him," Ms. Boyle remembered, " 'How do you run a marathon?' And he would say, 'Just get up every day and run.' " That's what Mr. Boyle did. He was a "no excuses" kind of guy, Ms. Boyle said.

A formidable athlete, Mr. Boyle, who was 37 and also worked for the firefighters' union, clearly had a soft side for his sister. She said he was protective, but from afar. Two years ago, they both ran in the Long Island Marathon, where Mr. Boyle, who lived in Westbury, N.Y., found her in the crowd and advised her to slow her pace for her own good. Then he disappeared. He finished at 3 hours 15 minutes.

"But I could see him reading this saying: 'That wasn't my good time! Tell them my good time!' " Ms. Boyle said; his good time, she said, was 3 hours 1 minute. "His goal was to break three hours in the city marathon this year. And he probably would have done it."

I never knew Michael, I wasn't even born when he passed. But my mom named me after him, she was watching a slide show of the names of the people and Michael stood out to her and I was named after him. I'm sure he was a fantastic man and God bless.

I'm honored to have come across a Christmas Tree in NYC while visiting over the holidays and to have read Mr. Boyle's prayer card- I wanted to remember him so I took a picture. I later was sharing my pics with family and his picture came up which prompted me to get his 9/11 tribute online. Thank you to his family for allowing him to be of service to the public for all of the years leading up to that day and encouraging him as a "helper" for times of crisis. I am 33 and a military wife and just wanted you to know I remembered your loved one and will continue to pray for peace.

I'm a supervisor at Colorado Springs TSA. Today in remembrance of 9-11 our agency gave us cards to be worn with our agency ID. Each card bears the name of a victim of 9-11 on one side and our agency oath on the other. It's my honor to wear the card bearing the name of Michael Boyle. My prayers are with your family today. I will never forget.

Yesterday, I climbed the Tower of the Americas here in San Antonio twice in honor of Michael Boyle. I don't know if Jeanie and Peter remember me, but I grew up on Oxford St with them. Mike was my 9th grade baseball coach with WABA. The Boyle's were always very nice people and Mike was their oldest son. Mike was always nice to me when I was a child. He would always say hi to me and ask me how I was doing when I saw him. I have grown up and I have been a Police Officer for the last 4 years. I was honored to wear Mike's face around my neck yesterday as I climbed the Tower of the Americas twice. He is my hero and a hero to all of Westbury, Long Island, New York, and America. I am proud to say that he was my friend.

I never had the honor of knowing Michael. Iam a firefighter for spotsylvania county in VA. My future father-in law went to high school with Michael. I recently participated in a 9/11 memorial stair climb where each participant walked for one of the 343. I had the honor of climbing the 110 flights with michaels picture attached to my bunker gear. I just wanted you all to know it was an honor to have said his name aloud at the top of the climb. I keep his picture in my locker at the firehouse to remind me of the ultimate sacrifice he made that day and to continue to honor his legacy everytime the tones drop for the next call. My thoughts and prayers go out to all his friends and family today. Thank you

I recently visited the memorial site of 9/11. As i was standing in front of the memorial my hand rested on it. When i looked down i saw that my hand laid on top of Michael's name. I decided right there and then that your dear Michael would be my Heavenly Angel forever. As i read about his life i felt a warmth for him; he was so selfless, giving and kind. I just want you, his family and friends to know that i shall forever remember Michael and carry him in my heart. <3 <3. With all my love, gratitude and respect, Georgiette Johansson

I recently visited New York for the first time and wanted to pay my respects at Ground Zero. By chance I stood at the memorial with my hand over Michael's name. It felt right to find out about this Fire Fighter when I returned home to Scotland. Michael sounds like an amazing man and I am so glad he was with his best friend. It really touched me to be there and then find out about Michael. I just wanted to pass this on, a long with my sympathy and best wishes x

Sept 14 2011 I never knew Michael but I believe I attended his parents wedding and lost touch with them . I wondered if James was in the building and knew he had a son. I saw this year that Bob Beckwith said he went to the WTC to help find Jimmy's son. I am the daughter in law of Anna Cannezzaro the best friend of Mary Tessler whom I believe was Jimmy's mother in law. I live in Fl now but would love to hear from you if you are the Boyle family that we knew. My heart goes out to you in any case. We were in NY then and I lost many friends. You son is a hero regardless if you are the same family or not. Marilyn Cannezzaro
