I went back and read all the condolences and kind words about Dennis that were sent to Dennis Sr. and Dorothy. It is hard to believe that it has been 21 years since that fateful day to which we now refer to as "911." However, it often feels as though it was just yesterday. I remember where I was and what I was doing. That "snap shot" memory. I can only imagine how that memory is etched in Dorothy and Dennis´ memories and hearts and the others who needlessly lost their loved ones on that day and in days to follow.
God continue to bless all who were touched that day and God bless America.

I wanted to send heartfelt thoughts to the family. I follow a tribute site on social media that remembers the birthday of folks lost on 9/11. I read Dennis' tribute earlier Sunday and was touched by his life, the plans he was making, and his incomparable sacrifice. Countless folks across the globe will never forget. I will never forget and our hearts are with you.

I went to Geneseo with Dennis and knew his wife Christine from Deer Park High School. He was my first friend at college. I used to meet him at Monroe Hall and we'd have lunch in the dining hall every Wednesday our freshman year. Dennis had a rare maturity and gracefulness to him, even back then. 20 years later, sending love and prayers to Christine, his family, and his best friend Frankie. Dennis is remembered, and missed.

I often think of you, especially this week, because I remember that Saturday, July 31, would be Dennis's 48th birthday. As always, my heartfelt thanks for sharing your memories and photos of Dennis, for giving me this opportunity to say, I care, and for corresponding with me. Please think of this message as a virtual hug from me.

Just words alone cannot express how wonderful Dennis truly was. I will never forgot the one morning I saw him and he was home sick from school. At lunch time he was feeling better and walked back up to school. That amazed me because I do not know anyone that would have not taken the rest of the day off. He was not only good looking and smart but had a beautiful family. I will never forget him. One special guy never to be forgotten! Truly an angel❤

I visited the 9/11 Memorial in Overland Park, Kansas this 9/11 and there was a name badge of Dennis placed on the monument. I was wondering how that got to Overland Park, Kansas and/or what the connection was?

Dear Dorothy
I have been searching for you on internet and came across your sons name. We grew up together on 10th street in Brooklyn. Annette wants to get everyone together. My heart was broken when I read about your son. I drove to work everyday on the Verrazano and watched the smoking debri and the non stop trucks carrying the twisted metal. The morning after I was sitting at a stand still on the SI expy and a car filled with brave firefighters pulled up next to me. They made me feel so safe all I could say to them was God Bless you, they thanked me and went on to do their job. Many thanks to your Son Dennis and God Bless you all. Love from and old friend Mary Lou Fusi-Lisa please get in touch I'm on Facebook.

I meet Dennis while he was sitting at my desk working as an accountant. The first thing he asked me was if the picture on my desk was daughter and he commented that she must be a "Kearney" girl. It turns out that Dennis' sister and my daughter graduated Bishop Kearney together. I only knew Dennis for a very short time and in that time I was so impressed with the kind of man he was. My friend who worked with me was pregnant and happened to live on the same street as Dennis' grandmother in Windsor Terrace. Dennis offered to drive her home so she would not have to take the train. Although we only knew Dennis from working and for such a short time both of us feel compelled to attend his memorial mass. He was a very special person and it was evident from the first time we spoke. Please know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers today.
Sincerely,

After all these years, I still think about Dennis fondly and with great admiration. He will always remain in my heart along with his family. I miss all of you. Its been a long time since I left Brooklyn but that part of me still exists. I always think about Melissa calling Dorothy out of our window and inviting her over, along with Patricia taking her to school for me. I love you all.

September 16, 2011
Dear O'Berg family,
My name is Leora, and I am in seventh grade. I would just like to say that no one who was a victim of the terrible events of 9-11 will ever be forgotten. Even though it is 2011, ten years after 9-11, the brave and courageous firemen, will, especially always be remembered. 9-11 was a horrible event and so much was lost on that day. It is up to us to keep the memory of 9-11 alive. By living our lives to the fullest, being the best people we can possibly be, and taking time to remember the brave souls who were lost on 9-11 each one of us has the possibility to act as a living memorial to all of the people who were lost on the disastrous day of 9-11.
Our support will always be there for you. In their own way, every single person in America was affected by 9-11. Through tragedy, good things can happen, though. Today, ten years after 9-11 we stand together, united, as we take some time to look back and remember, remember all that was lost on 9-11; we also must remember, though, that it is our jobs to pull through tragedies like what happened on 9-11 and come out better people; because if we don't we will not be paying the kind of tribute to the victims of 9-11 that they would want and deserve.
yours truly,
Leora

I met Dennis' mother, aunt, and uncle when they visited Hawai'i some time after 911. I was able to spend the day with them and they spoke of what a great person he was. As a firefighter here in Honolulu, I think about this young man every day, and admire his commitment to his family and community. He made the ultimate sacrifice. He answered the call. I was given a pin with Dennis' picture, and although we never met, I feel that we have a connection. May God bless your soul, Dennis, and bring peace to the hearts of your family. Me ke aloha pumehana....

Dear O'Berg Family,
I am writing on behalf of Mrs. Koenitsknecht's 6th grand class in Grand Rapids Michigan. The class came together to sponsor a flag that was displayed in the West Michigan Healing Field. This was an awe-inspiring event where 3,200 American flags were displayed in honor of the victims of 9/11. Attached to each flag stand are the names and short bios of each of the victims. It was a remarkable display to witness and an amazing tribute to the lives lost on that tragic day which shocked our nation and our souls ten years ago.
Tomorrow when they take down the remarkable display we will be able to take Dennis's flag and his bio and display it in the class room. I intend to read the complete bio of Dennis to the class and display his flag with pride. Although the terrorist attacks were not in their life time, the tenth anniversary of 9/11 is, and that anniversary is something we can help them remember being part of. We will never forget, and we will ensure our children and our children's children never forget either. Although I know you must miss him everyday I hope you take comfort in knowing that he truly is a hero and a role model to the rest of the world.

Dear Dennis
I think about you often and see you as an angel looking over and protecting your family. I always thought the world of your family. I worked in the World Trade Center in the 70s and to this day feel soooo sad at the huge loss of lives that was senseless. I get very angry also.
This should not have happened. I will think of you always! <3

I am thankful to those at Legacy.com for providing this forum for people to offer their condolences, share their love, and tell their stories all in the name of keeping the memory of Dennis alive. This compilation will long serve as a testament to the truly amazing person that Dennis was.
While they will likely never be able to truly comprehend the atrocities of that fateful September morning (who amongst us will?), I look forward to the day when my three young, beautiful, daughters
will be able to learn of not only the heroic tales of 9/11 that have since come to define Dennis but more importantly, to me at least, to learn of their Uncle Dennis' sharp sense of humor, his deep love of music, his gentlemanly way, or quite simply, his smile.
It is an amazing testament to Dennis' character that the awe-inspiring selflessness and heroism exhibited that world-altering day are overshadowed by characteristics Dennis exhibited naturally each and every day during the course of his life. Dennis was kind, caring, compassionate, dependable, intelligent and courageous. These, and countless other remarkable traits that made him the man he was, comprise Dennis P. O'Berg's true legacy.
On more of a personal note, while I often think of the times that we would have shared these past ten years (and be sharing long into the future), my family and his, I take solace in the fact that somewhere, somehow,"Uncle Den" is always there, looking out for and protecting my girls......and for that I am grateful.
Dennis, you are loved and missed more than you will ever know.

Although so much has changed in the past ten years, there is one thing that hasn't; the fact that my cousin is the bravest man I know and that I love him very much. To say he was my cousin is kind of false, he always felt like an older brother. His patience with me as a kid amazes me; with me spitting out endless hours of movie and TV quotes, Dennis sat there patiently and listened to every word I said. He was the kind of guy that always made you feel special. It saddens me that so much has happened in my life that I cannot share with him. I wish he was able to visit me when I attended SUNY Geneseo. I wish he could have been there when I got my first job. I wish he would have been standing at the altar when my brother got married.
But in the end, he was there. Every step of the way. Guiding us in the decisions we make because we follow his example. We follow in his bravery, heroism and most importantly his love. I miss you every day Dennis. That will never change for as long as I live. Your memory will always live on and never be forgotten.

It was an amazing experience running the tunnel tower run last year with his cousin Richard . It was an honor to wear Dennis name on my shirt as we made the run to the twin towers through the battery tunnel. I never met Dennis but, witnessing first hand the love that his family has for him is overwhelming and wonderfulI look foward to running and celebrateing his memory again . Thank you for allowing me to be apart of this honor

When my cousin Dennis heroically left us 10 years ago, I did not fully comprehend what I lost. At the time, I felt sadness and anger for having lost someone I loved so much. Ten years later, however, I have realized that I lost a role model and a best friend. Our family has celebrated births, marriages, graduations, and career milestones since September 11, but never do we not stop to reflect on how we wished Dennis was physically present with us. I loved Dennis and I miss him terribly. He will always be a terrific example of a great man, and if only every person had his mind and his heart, we probably wouldn't have to be here writing and reading these words of remembrance.

I will never forget the first time I met Dennis. I was five when my sister invited him over to hang out by our pool. Me and my other sisters thought he looked so handsome and looked like "Ken" He used to keep his brush by the lounge chair so his hair was perfect at all times : ) And from then on I always remember him being there. I can hardly remember much of a time before Dennis. He was an amazing person. He loved my sister so much.. It's still so hard to believe what happened. Our lives our forever changed with out him. We all miss him very much.

I was so proud and yet so saddened when I learned that Dennis is my 3rd cousin, twice removed, and couldn't be more honored to be related.

Dennis was one of the most caring, considerate and wonderful people I have ever known. His passing left a huge hole in our hearts, and probably in the hearts of anyone who had ever known him. My deepest condolences on the passing of your son, Dennis. I know that there is still a tremendous amount of sadness in your hearts but I'm so glad that you draw comfort in knowing that he sends you many signs of his continuing presence around you. May you be blessed with more and more of those.
The book I mentioned to you is "Love Beyond Life" by Joel Martin and Patricia Romanowski. You can order it at your local bookstore or from Amazon. It's very gentle and talks about those kinds of signs that we mentioned.
Much love always,

I have been praying for all of you in the O'Berg family today, the second anniversary of 9/11. May the love and peace of God support and sustain each of you. You will always be in my prayers.
Although I never met Dennis, Jr., I spent eight years at St. John Evengelist School with Dennis, Sr. We lived near each other on 17th Street and I feel blessed to have known the O'Berg's. My heart broke when I saw the O'Berg name among the list of Fire Fighters lost at the WTC.
Dennis, Jr. continues to live in your hearts and memory and will be rejoined with you in eternity when all pain and troubles cease.

REMEMBERING
***********
At the rising of the sun,
and at its going down
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
At the blowing of the wind
and in the chill of winter
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
At the opening of the buds
and in the rebirth of spring
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
At the blueness of the skies
and in the warmth of summer
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
At the rustling of the leaves
and in the beauty of autumn
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
At the beginning of the year
and when it ends
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
As long as you live,
he too will live, for
he is now a part of you as
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
When you are weary and
in need of strength
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
When you are lost and
sick at heart
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
When you have joy you
crave to share
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
When you have decisions
that are difficult to make
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
When you have achievements
that are based on his
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.
As long as you live,
he too will live, for
he is now a part of you as
YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM.

We came across a picture the other day of your Dennis with Ed and Kevin. It really is amazing how much they all resembled eachother. Must be the "clean cut look".

It was almost a year from today's date that I received Dennis' mercy band. Even though I never had the privilege of knowing him personally, I sense his spirit many times.
Mr. O'Berg wrote and told me about Dennis' love of ladybugs. I too have always loved lady bugs, and have them on different items throughout my house. Dennis and his wife celebrated their honeymoon on Maui. I live on Maui. When I walk out my backdoor to my lanai, I have a lady-bug welcome mat. I have a Limoges ladybug that has been on my desk next to my computer for years--it has moved from Texas to Maui. Coincidences? I don't question things like this anymore. My mother-in-law passed away the past summer. She loved butterflies, and whenever I see butterflies I think of her. Now I am noticing many things that have both butterflies and ladybugs together. It always makes me smile and remember Jackie, my mother-in-law and Dennis. Somehow or another I feel they are both looking down and smiling at their loved ones.
Mr. O'Berg, if you read this again, please contact me. I found a print of a ladybug with a pattern of the stars and stripes on its back. It is quite unique and lovely. I found it a while back at a store here on Maui. I would love to send it to you.
Dennis and his family remain in my heart and prayers.
Aloha,

I lived on the same floor as Frank Marino my first two years of college, while I was a student at SUNY Geneseo. Although, I can't say that I knew Dennis very well, you only had to meet him once to know what a genuine person he was (and, what a great friend he was to Frank). My condolences go out to Dennis's family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the friends and family of Dennis,
For Chanukah this year my mom gave my sister and I two small boxes. She said this isn't your typical present, as a matter of fact it's a bit sad. Both of us confused, opened our small gifts. Inside we each found a 911 bracelet. I was fighting back tears as I read the name on my bracelet which was Dennis. I have read about him and my thoughts and prayers go out to those of you who lost Dennis. I am honored to have this bracelet. I only wish that i could have had the chance to have met Dennis myself. I will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

To the family & friends of Dennis.
I'm sure you all are grateful to have shared the life of such a special person!
I pray that someday your happiness,
as you remember your special times
together, will far out weigh the grief you are feeling now.
May God grant you Strength & Peace
during this Holiday Season & Always!

On 9/11/2002, I sang in the Traveling Requiem that was performed at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Many tears were shed. I am the mother of 3 sons, one of which was also singing in the Requiem. We were given buttons, each with a name of someone lost on 9/11. I feel honored to have worn Dennis O'Berg's name. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to lose a son. I have watched several memorials, the last of which was recently for the fallen firefighters. My heart goes out to the O'Berg family and to all the families of those who have lost love ones. May God Bless You and Keep You Strong. You will be united again. My heartfelt sympathies,

I too went to Geneseo with Dennis. We first met his freshman year while we were living in Monroe. I have never met a more giving and loving individual.
A few years ago I ran into Dennis on the subway. I hadn't seen him in forever and his smile and warmth brought back wonderful memories. He was working for Ernst & Young at the time and glowed as he told me he was getting married that September. I couldn't think of anyone who deserved it more. I don't think I have ever met Christine, but anyone who can win the heart of an incredible individual like Dennis must be pretty tremendous herself.
I still have the e-mail Dennis sent saying he was leaving Ernst & Young and going into the fire department. How lucky they were to be getting him.
My prayers are with his family, friends and all who feel a void without him here in body. There is no doubt, however, that he is here in spirit and I think we feel that every day.

Dear O'Berg Family,
I purchased a mercy band and asked for a random name from the NYFD, I received my band bearing the name Dennis O'Berg, I looked up his profile and as tears streamed down my face I felt honored and blessed to be able to wear his name with honor and respect. So many amazing people gave their lives to save another and Dennis was one of those amazing people. I just want to say thank you for blessing us with Dennis and we will forever remember his deeds and pure heart.
Thank you and God Bless America!

Dear O'Berg Family,
I was born in N.Y. state and raised in N.J. Now I am here in Ohio. I ordered a 911 bracelet and your beloved Dennis,Jr's name is on it. I pulled up his history on the Memorial website and was able to learn a litle about him. I am very priveledged to be able to wear this bracelet in his memory. He sounded like a wonderful person to everyone who met him. A wonderful son, brother, husband.
I would like to extend my sympathies to your family on the loss of this brave, unselfish person. He chose a professional that was dangerous, but he put his personal feelings aside to help those in need. This is truly a HERO!
GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU IN HIS CARE.
MAY HE GIVE YOU PEACE.
MAY HE GIVE YOU COMFORT.
KEEP DENNIS,JR'S MEMORY ALIVE, REMEMBER HIS GOOD WORKS, ACTS OF UNSELFISHNES. MAY THE MEMORY OF HIM ENDURE FORVER, NEW YORK'S BRAVEST-FDNY!!

I did not know know Dennis personally, but I would ride the expess bus into the city with his lovely Mom Dorothy. She often would speak about how proud she was of her son as well as her other children. My prayers are with Dorothy and the rest of the family.
May you rest in peace Dennis - You are a true HERO!
And may God Bless your loved ones.

I met Dennis through his close friends, Frank and Dolores Marino.
Dennis was a wonderful, caring, funny, and sincere person. Dolores used to take me out with her brothers friends on the weekends. That is how I met Dennis and Christine. Dennis had a witty sense of humor that made it easy for people around him to always have a smile on their face.
We will never know why God took such a special person so early and in such a tragic way. We do know that not a day will go by without Dennis being thought of by the people who knew him, and whose hearts that he touched.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Christine and the O'Berg family.
Dennis was a wonderful person and will be truly missed.

Dear Dennis,
I was your neighbor for seven years and didn't really get to know you all that well. You seemed, however, to be the ultimate perfect son and brother, a wonderful human being. Your parents miss you more than you could ever imagine...being a parent I can understand their misery...but they are very proud of you and will somehow get thru this, if only to live honoring your heroics and keep you with them always thru the wonderful memories they have. We who are still here thank you for all that you have done. MJ Kammerer & Family....

I too am wearing a 911 bracelet with Dennis's name on it. I purchased two bands--one for my husband and one for me. The one I had purchased for my husband honored another heroic firefighter, and that was the one I put on first. I took it off and gently put it back in the box. Just holding the band with Dennis' name on it stirred up feelings within. Maybe the Irish in me immediately felt more of a kinship with him than the other firefighter. I don't try to explain or analyze things much anymore. 911 was beyond anything I could ever rationalize, understand, or come to terms with. I have just finished reading the moving tributes to him in his Guest Book. I am even more honored to wear his name on my wrist. My heartfelt prayers are offered to his friends and family. Dennis is truly a hero to our Country, and his name will live forever in the hearts and minds of many of us.
God bless you and keep you safe,

Dennis was a year ahead of me at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn. I would not claim to be a close friend of his, but I was privileged to know him briefly. My thoughts and prayers go with Dennis' family. His kindness to those around him was clear then and remains clear now as an example for us all.

Dear Christine, Dennis, Dorothy and Patricia,
I recently read the January 8th article in the New York Times about the retired firemen (including Dennis O'Berg, Sr.) still putting in ten hour days tirelessly searching for their sons who had also been firemen (and of course others) who were lost at the World Trade Center. This has to be one of the most unselfish acts of love I have ever known. A sadder, more difficult job than this was never done.
Dennis, Jr. was a fine young man who will live on in everyone's hearts, going down in history as an
extemely brave fireman who gave his own life to help save people he didn't even know. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Dennis, Sr. a strong, brave man who is truly a hero himself.
My love and prayers are with you always. God Bless you.

Dear Dorothy, Dennis, and Christine,
I am Janet's sister and Greg's sister-in-law. Dennis has been on my heart since I learned about him. Janet told my friends here in Cleveland the story of Dennis and he is in their hearts also. I am very happy that I can wear a bracelet with Dennis' name on it. I wore a POW bracelet during the Vietnam era, saw my POW come off the plane, and returned his bracelet in person 25 years later. I hope I can meet you all one day soon. With much love, Carol

Our deepest sympathies and prayers for you and your entire family. You had a too short, but proud career..we all thank you.
I also lost another cousin on 9/11, William David Lake, firefighter with Fire Rescue #2. He could have retired, but didn't, because he loved his job so much, as you did.
I'm so hurt to hear of the loss of you two...you both will never be forgotten.
May peace come to both of your families and all the other people of this terrible tradgedy.
God Bless you all!
Your cousin Ken
