Marie Abad Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
Literary Escapist

Marie Abad loved her job as a senior vice president at Keefe Bruyette & Woods, where she was one of the highest-ranking women in the firm. But it was equally important to her to find an escape from work, said her husband, Rudy, and she found that through the hundreds of books she went through each year.

Ms. Abad, 49, read on the train commuting from Long Island to the World Trade Center, and she read on vacation. Each October, she and her husband would spend three weeks in Hawaii — a tradition that started on their honeymoon and continued over the next two decades — and every year she would make sure she had plenty to read. Hawaii meant down time: days on end when the biggest decision was where to have dinner, and the passage of time was marked by the leisurely flutter of turned pages — novels, biographies, celebrity tell-alls.

"She'd go through eight books in three weeks, and these were not little books," Mr. Abad said. "I know because I did the packing."

Ms. Abad, who was born and raised in Queens, did not plan on a career in business. She studied sociology at Queens College and dreamed of being a teacher. She and her husband had plotted out the lives they would lead when the workaday world could be left behind: six months of the year traveling was their plan. And of course, a world of books to explore.

Marie, you have touched my heart with your story. You have succeeded in your wish to help kids in poverty. Rudy, my thoughts are with you. Your wife is very proud of what you have done for the kids living in poverty in the Philippines. Let us remember Marie, and all those lost because of that tragic day. May their memories be treasured and never ever forgotten.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this in memory of Maria Abad. From the very start when KBW had first moved into the 86th floor of 2WTC I had frequent contact with her regarding their telephone moves and changes as well as other data circuits. She was extremely bright and knowledgeable and had a great personality. I can only offer my deepest sympathy and most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Almost 19 years have passed. The scars are deeply embedded in my heart. The tears still come rather quickly. A sad moment or a happy one brings back so many memories of our times together........I thank all the people who have
taken the time to pay tribute to Marie.....some total strangers and the very dear friends who have not allowed her memory to vanish. Thank you all. Her loving husband . . . . RUDY

Im so very touched after almost 20 years of the brave souls who were taken from this earth on 9/11.
I myself am an avid reader. We recently went on a cruise and I bought loads of books. They were in a duffel bag that was carried thru 3 airports coming and going. One of the books I read was Fall and Rise. I made a pledge to myself to look up every person listed on the fallen list and find out a little something about them. So, as you can see, Im just getting started!
But I could see Marie and I being great friends. May heaven have a huge enough library to keep her happy! God bless.

Awfully sorry you passed away on Sept. 11th. I visited NYC after the attacks, but life there seems so different.
Dont worry, Im sure the Big Apple is still resilient, continues to attract several tourists, and the US killed OBL. Enjoy your Fourth of July, Marie!

Reading about your life the last couple of days for my new Facebook group, I will ALWAYS remember 9/11, I am so inspired... What Rudy has done with your wish to help the children and their families of the Philippines is to put into concrete form what I have always believed that 9/11 should have been to us on Planet Earth... a time when we all put down our sharp weapons and our sharp tongues and said, "Enough. We have to learn to live together in love. We cannot let something like this happen again." God bless you both for that! I will never forget you. You have always been in my heart since that day but now I have the joy of knowing more about you. I hope I will feel your soul walking with me from time to time. I was reading about the memorial finally opening tomorrow and looking at the pictures of the fallen - I choose Maria to look up. I was 18 when 9/11 happened, living in suburban Wisconsin - so far removed from everything. I couldnt grieve...because it wasnt in my realm, it didnt seem real, i wasnt closely affected...just a myriad of reasons. 13 years later, I have a three year old daughter who has taught me what true love, compassion, & gratitude is. Reading about Maria made me break down - her story highlights both the magnitude of suffering in this world & the magnitude of compassion and good. I can't find the right words to express, because nothing seems to break through the enormity of all this....but thank you. thank you for leaving such an imprint on this world.

Hi, Maria. I am in 6th grade. I just read your story. I wished you had not passed away, but I think God does things for a reason. I mean... everyone who's lost a love one in there life, must believe that. Maybe they lost a grandma or parent, maybe even a pet... my point is that God makes good choices, and if He took you, then you must be special to Him. I hope you like the pic of the flower.it is for you.
