Joseph Amatuccio Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
From Tollbooths to Towers

Joseph Amatuccio was hired by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a toll collector right out of high school. For some people, that might be a dead-end job. For him it was only a beginning. Over the years, Mr. Amatuccio, 41, moved from toll collecting to carpentry and from there to management. He used the agency's education plan to get an undergraduate degree in business management, taking classes at night, and was 18 months from a master's degree at Baruch College.

As a manager of operations and maintenance at the World Trade Center, he was on the phone every weekend from his home in Ozone Park, Queens, making sure that things were being done right, that subordinates were treating his beloved towers just so. "I'd argue with him, `What do you think, you're going to own those buildings?' " said his wife, Debra.

Mr. Amatuccio was seen on the street outside the twin towers at one point on the morning of Sept. 11. Someone yelled, "Let's run!" Ms. Amatuccio was later told. He ran back in.

Hi Joseph, it's been a while since I've sent a note but I guess you know everything that's going on. I'm not perfect, I've made a lot of mistakes but I'm really trying to do the best I can. I could really use your help. And tell Mommy, Daddy and Rita I could use theirs too! Love you, miss you all the time.
Love, your big sister

September 11, 2017

Well, Baby Brother, another year has come and gone. It's almost September 12 and I needed to write you a little note. You are missed more than you know and I know you know what's going on in my life. Sounds like an Abbot and Costello routine -- I know you know I know!! So, it's time for you to pray for me and help me get through this rough time. Also, ask Rita, Mommy and Daddy to pray, too. I need all the help I can get. Miss you more every day. Love, your big sister

At my church in Red Bank NJ, we picked names to pray for from a basket and Joseph's was listed, along with two other 9/11 victims. I've been praying for him and then I got curious what was he like? So I googled his name and have loved reading all about him on here. Thanks to all who've shared their wishes on here so I can have a picture in my mind of the type of man Joseph was while I pray for him still.

I had the absolute pleasure to work with Joe for 4+ years at the WTC. I was a supervisor for the Observation Deck in Tower 2. Joe was ALWAYS there to help me when we had elevator problems, even when it was extremely inconvenient for his department. I had moved to Las Vegas in January 2000, so I was very lucky to not be there that horrible morning. I considered Joe much more than a rival department head, I considered him a friend, and was devastated when I found out days later that he did not make it home to his loved ones on that horrible day. It was an honor to know him and work with him on a daily basis. To say he was a great man would be a gross understatement! He was truly one of a kind, and the world is absolutely a much worse place without him here! Prayers always to his family, friends and loved ones! May he continue to RIP and watch over you!

Wow, Can't believe I'm seeing your face again since that sad day. My final memories of you. I just started working with you it was only 2 or 3 months and I worked as your Office Manager in the twin towers. You loved sushi haha and Starbucks Frap's and would send me down to get one and you would say get one for yourself too. You would lean over and speak to my good ear with a cute smirk. You would always talk about your son. You was proud of him. IYou gave me a book 12 Laws of Leadership. On that day I had it with me and ran like the wind with it when we receive the call on our walkie's to evacuate the building. I still have that book and think of you often. You will always be in my heart! Say Hi to my brother he passed away at 31 tragic accident too. Well I wish there were more bosses like you in this world. Happy 13 years with your Lord in Heaven. I will see you when my time comes.

Yesterday at my church, The Salvation Army in Piqua, Ohio, I received two cloth rosettes containing Mr. Amatuccio's name. These were part of the flag made of rosettes containing all of the names of the victims of September 11, 2001, displayed during our remembrance service on September 11,2011. We were each asked to take a name and pray for that family. I hope and pray the Amatuccio family is doing well. God Bless You.
