Gregg Atlas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
Hero to the End
"Everybody ran to the stairs," recalled Gregory Warnock, a 20-year-old broker trainee who worked on the 39th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center. "We started making our way down, landing by landing."

At the 18th floor, "there was an older fireman one floor below me. He gave me a smile. He was huffing and puffing, laughing to himself, making a joke about his age."

The 44-year-old lieutenant accepted Mr. Warnock's offer to help carry gear up about 25 flights of stairs, and he jokingly asked if the broker trainee was a firefighter. Told that Mr. Warnock was a broker, "he said, 'you stay doing that, it's better money.' "

"People were coming down, saying people were trapped on the 72nd floor. He said to me, 'Go down, you did a great job.' "

Before Mr. Warnock left, he asked the firefighter's name. "He was like, 'Gregg Atlas,' and he bent down and flexed like Atlas the bodybuilder."

Gregg,

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. I truly hate this day. Even after all these years, it doesn’t get any easier to handle inside of my heart. I remember working with you at Keebler Cookies, before you left and joining the fire department. We had some really great times!
Rest easy my friend in Heaven. I’ll never forget you and all the others who lost their lives on and after, due to the damage everyone went through.

“God Bless You Gregg”
Your old friend Joey

PS: I have a recording studio in my house. I wrote and recorded this song for you and all those who passed away.

Dear Greg,
We never actually met. I was watching the many 9/11 films. Even in fleeting seconds—many personalities shown through. There was something I saw in your face—not fear but recognition of the impossible task at hand and as someone said to FDNY Jay Jonas—"we may not survive the day." Anyway, I said prayers for you and many others. Your phenomenal bravery and unmatched commitment brings tears to my eyes.
Yet, I had no idea your name—so, I filmed a film and tried to decipher the numbers with some iPhone fancy editing and I still had to search for quite awhile but for the numbers on your helmet.
I'm saddened by the fact you're no longer here. I hoped and prayed someone was with you in those final moments. Your bravery saved people. I hoped that Jesus spirited you away and that you knew no pain and were not alone.
If they do a walk in 2024—I'll be there.
I know this—you're brave and loved. Guess I'll see you next year.

I'm from the UK, I was 31 back then and remember watching those terrible scenes of 9/11 unfold on TV here in England, my 1st thoughts were with all the 1st responders that attended (as well as those that worked in the towers) ...i have since seen documentaries post 9 /11 and stuff on Ten house ..I never knew you Gregg BUT as part of ten house you were one of the guys 1st on scene ....and along with your other firefighter brothers you will never be forgotten for your sacrifice to save as many lives as you could across the world ....

you are ALL remembered AND I for one will never forget you and the other guys from TEN house that passed that sad day ..and the other firefighters, police, ems ect that gave thier lives in service to rescue folks.

May you and your brothers rest in peace Knowing that they are all remembered for thier heroic sacrifice that day to the people of NY and the the effect it had NOT just in NY BUT worldwide!

hopefully one day i will get across the pond to pay my respects at the memorial and the ten house memorial (its on my bucket list of things to do as im now 53)

My Old Friend Gregg,

Here we go again. I really hate this time of the year. It brings way too much sorrow into my heart. I have something very interesting to tell you. I usually never watch anything about 911 on this week. But for some reason, I felt like I needed to watch all the documentaries about 911 I could find. I was watching, “911: One Day In America”, on the National Geographic Channel. On the first episode, at 11 minutes and 8 seconds, they were talking to a captain about a gas leak on some street. The captain walks up to YOU, and says something to you, then continues walking. It was only for a few seconds that he was next to youbut it was you! It was about a half an hour before the first plane hit the north tower. You had that mellow, happy look on your face that I remember. Something was telling me to watch those documentaries, and now I know why. To see you happy on that horrible day Gregg. I got a picture off the TV and posted it with this message. I’m so glad I got to see you, I truly am. I’ll never forget you, and I’ll never forget this day Gregg.

God Bless You In Heaven
Your Friend,
Joseph J Ruggiere

Gregg, I was just a schoolboy in 2nd grade on that day. I still remember those horrible pictures I saw on TV that afternoon as it was yesterday. But I also remember seeing those brave firefighters risking their own lives to rescue others life. 20 years later, I still remember you and your colleagues as true heros. Your story is well known around the world and we are proud on you all.

September 11, 2021

Gregg, you will always be remembered as a hero. You are loved and missed by many. RIP

Gregg,

Here we are again. This horrible day will always burn inside of us. It’s been 20 years since you were taken. My wife was also taken last October. I used to tell her all about you, so I know she is with you and making you laugh. As I am a lot older now, it’s just a matter of time before I will meet you again. And when that day comes, my wife and I will be able to laugh and love with you.

God bless you Gregg,
Until we meet in Heaven,
Joey

I simply cannot say enough about the sacrifice that so many men willingly made to save others on September 11, 2001. To say I admire them is a great understatement. I choose to never forget this day or these heroes. Gregg was one of the many that made one final act of indescribable courage and selflessness. I gather from this last recorded encounter that he was such a light, and somehow kept his kindness and sense of humor through it all. Thank you for your sacrifice, Gregg. My prayers go out to any of his family and friends who continue to mourn this loss. God bless you all.

All these years later, I still remember Gregg's smile - every time he came to my office he would be smiling and laughing. That was my first thought about him when I heard of his loss - his huge, infectious smile. So the story above, about him smiling as he went up the stairs, brings tears to my eyes all these years later. Please know he will never be forgotten.

My Dear Friend Gregg,
So, another year has passed. They say time heals, but it seems not to. I miss you buddy, more and more each year. I hate this day! My hearts breaks more and more thinking about the great times we had at Keebler. (That was before "The 10 House"). So many fun stories with you and John run through my head. We were so young those days. I miss them.....I do miss them.

I did not know you personally, but today you became a special part of me. During crossfit we did the 343 workout in honor of the 343 first responders who lost their lives on September 11. I was given your name and told to do this workout in remembrance of you. Thank you for your bravery and selflessness. I will never forget you.

My Dear Old Buddy Gregg,
Another year of the day when you sacrificed your life to save others is here. It's actually 15 years now, and I will never forget you, as I will never forget this day. I was thinking of a funny night we had together. It was back around 1980-ish. We were working at Keebler. You and John decided to get an apartment close to the job. I remember you two inviting me over for dinner. Funny was, you guys tried to make a spaghetti and tomato sauce dinner. You put a whole box of spaghetti in a very small pot of water. The finished result was a large amount of spaghetti mush, LOL. (That's OK, we ate anything back then). So you scooped up some of this stuff and plopped in on a dish, then dumped some bottled tomato sauce over it, gave us three a beer, and we ate it. It might not sound funny now, but we all laughing so much at what bad cooks you two were. That was a fun night Gregg. There's so many other funny stories from the job I remember. I'll never forget them, and I'll never forget you.

Rest In Peace My Buddy,
Joey

Gregg Atlas was my cousin. Every time I think of Gregg and what happened on 9-11, I get overwhelmed with a sense of pride. What an amazing legacy Gregg left for his family! Gregg had a great sense of humor. One year when we were kids Gregg and his older brother Don came to Florida to visit with my grandparents. In the middle of the night Gregg slipped a quarter in to the vibrating bed of his brother! That was Gregg! Gregg is missed by all that knew him. He IS a true hero!

So, ten years have passed. It’s seems like yesterday. I promise you with my life Gregg, that “I’LL NEVER FORGET”! T May God Bless you in Heaven, may God Bless your family, and hoping they can find strength from the evil that has taken you from them.

Mr. Atlas, my high school gave each person a name on wrist band to wear around this week to remember the loss of so many innocent heroic people. I was given the honor to wear your name. When I read your small biography, I do admit, I cried a bit. It's brave men like you that sacrificed your life for another. I know you are blest where you are now, and I cannot express my immense thanks to you for being a man of courage and of leadership to save others. I shall pray for you always, and even though we never had the pleasure of meeting, I shall never forget the deed of kindness you had done on that day. September 22, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I signed this guest book last year, and I wanted to sign it this year as well. I mentioned how my school hands out bracelets on this day with the names of four people who unfortunately passed away. Gregg was one of the names on my bracelet last year. I was actually in charge of making the bracelets this year, and it just so happened that Gregg turned up on the list of names that I had. I was reminded of how impacted I was last year reading his name to myself, and I just wanted to say something quickly this year as well. Even though I did not know this man, I still hold him in my heart and think about him always. I wish peace to his family and friends, especially on this terrible day. I hope that as the years go on and I write in this guest book, I am able to see that his family and friends are still holding strong. God Bless You, and God Bless this heroic man.

Gregg,

How sad I am at this time of the year. You are always in my prayers, but when September 11th comes, the thought of you gets stronger. I'm so sorry my friend. I'm sorry that you were sent to Heaven in the middle of your life. I'm sorry for JoAnn, your son, and the rest of your family. I'm sorry we didn't have more time together as friends on Long Island. I'm so sorry and sad.

May God bless you and your family,

Hi Kasey, Thank you so much for signing Gregg's Guest Book and that you will be making a plaque in his memory. I cannot tell you what it means to us, his family! Information about Gregg can simply be obtained by googling his name on the Internet. But you must know that he was one of the biggest characters that God put on this earth. He was one of the most "alive" people that I have ever known. When the photo on this Memorial Page was taken, his expression is very serious, as you can see. He did this on purpose, as he told me that he wanted people to think that "he was a serious kind of guy." He lived his life to the fullest. Gregg never did anything half way. He always put his heart and soul into anything he did in life. Also, he was not afraid to try something new or to teach himself how to do just about anything that he became interested in. He loved the Fire Department and told our son that "if you find a job you love, you will never work a day in your life." On September 5, 2001, he had just completed 20 years "on the job." Outside of the FDNY, we had a "mini farm." At one point in time, we raised cows (for beef and dairy), pigs and chickens. He loved gardening and every summer, there was a huge organic garden on our property. There were tomatoes, corn, garlic, onions, asparagus, potatoes and melons. Our families and neighbors all got to share in this delicious produce. He loved to fish and hunt. His favorite beach was the Jersey Shore and we have many happy memories of all of us being together there. Most of all, he was and is my best friend and the love of my life. Our two children were everything to him. His friends go all the way back to his high school days and we still keep in touch. Lastly, he was very human, down to earth, good and decent. He loved a good joke, a good story. It was typical to help friend, family and/or neighbor and maybe share a cup of coffee or a beer with them. He personifies what good and ordinary people do when something horrific happens...they do the right thing and do not turn their back on someone in need. Kasey, I hope that this helps and you get to read this entry. Please write another entry if you do and add contact me, so we can be in touch. Also, Engine 10/Ladder 10, aka "Ten House" have their own website. It is also the firehouse (on Liberty Street), directly across from the World Trade Center site. Thank you so much Kasey, for this beautiful gesture. God Bless! JoAnn Atlas & Family

I'm a 33 year police veteran in Maine. My family and I visited ground zero and Engine 10 for the first time in the summer of 2008. The last time I was at the Trade Center was in the 70's I could not believe it was the same place my emotions were of disbelief and great sadness. The families lost so much that day as did the City of New York. My heart has and always will go out to them.

My memorial place in the forest, for you Gregg
