David Carlone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
Catching Up With Friends
David G. Carlone was a man who knew his own mind and followed his own road. On their first date 25 years ago, said his wife, Beverly, he told her that he was going to marry her. And he later vowed that he would run a marathon in under three hours. He accomplished both goals.

Mr. Carlone, 46, had given up the grind of commuting daily from Randolph, N.J., into New York City. He had worked at the World Trade Center for many years, but about six years ago, as his three sons ‹ now ages 12, 15 and 17 ‹ hit the age of sports teams and after-school games, he quit and took a job as an account executive at an insurance company 15 minutes from home.

But he still had many friends in the towers. When he would go in for an occasional business meeting, as he did the morning of Sept. 11 at Aon's offices on the 105th floor of 2 World Trade Center, he would actually look forward to it, Ms. Carlone said. It was an opportunity to catch with the places and people that had once been his world and that were still very dear to him.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 19, 2001.

David G. Carlone, 46, of Washington Valley Rd., Randolph, NJ, formerly of Waterbury, died Tuesday, (September 11, 2001) in the World Trade Center tragedy. He was the husband of Beverly (Deschino) Carlone. David was born December 17, 1954 in Waterbury, a son of Joseph J. and the late Anna (DeMaida) Carlone, and lived in Waterbury for 23 years. He was a 1972 graduate of Crosby High School and a 1977 graduate of Bentley College. He was employed as an account executive at FM Global of Parsippany, NJ. He was a former member of the Libra A.A., and the Y.M.C.A. He was a Suburban Soccer Club Coach in New Jersey and also coached Hub Soccer in Denville, NJ. He was the Parents Athletic Association director in New Jersey. Besides his wife of 21 years, he leaves three sons, Darrick, Nicholas, and Matthew Carlone, all of Randolph, NJ; a brother, Joseph Carlone of Waterbury; and two sisters; Joan Napp and Paula Bellamare, both of Waterbury; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Carlone. A memorial Service will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 4 p.m., in the auditorium at Crosby High School, 300 Pierpont Rd., Waterbury. Friends may call at the school on Saturday, 3 p.m. until the service at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross Liberty Fund, 64 Holmes Ave., Waterbury, 06710 or to the Carlone Children Trust Fund, c/o Sovereign Bank, 430 State Highway #10, Randolph, NJ 07869. Paid Notice published in THE HARTFORD COURANT on October 19, 2001.

David Carlone, 46, marathon man

Robert D'Amico will always remember the long Sundays spent running along the hilly terrain of Waterbury, Conn., with his buddy, David Carlone. In those days, the friends, both insurance agents in Hartford, would train for marathons, sometimes running together six or seven days out a week.

"We'd go for 18-mile runs on Sundays and just talk about everything from our job to our families," said D'Amico, who still lives in Waterbury. "But as we got older, we got smarter. We'd say, 'Let's do five miles and then lunch.' "

Mr. Carlone, 46, of Randolph, was an account executive at FM Global in Parsippany. On Sept. 11, he was at the World Trade Center for a special meeting with AON Corp. on the South Tower's 105th floor. His wife, Beverly, said Mr. Carlone was running late that morning, gave her a quick kiss at 6:35 and sped off to work.

A few hours later, two hijacked jetliners crashed into the Twin Towers. His wife said Mr. Carlone had worked at the Trade Center for five years in the early 1980s.

"He used to work in the towers years ago, but the commute was just ridiculous and he hardly ever saw the kids," his wife said. "He got a job closer to home and then he was able to coach more and be more active with them."

Raised in Waterbury, Mr. Carlone attended Crosby High School and graduated from Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., in 1977. He met his wife the summer before his senior year at a manufacturing company in Woodbury, Conn.

"We went out on a date and that first night . . . he told me, 'Ya know, I'm going to marry you.' I thought he was crazy. But three months later, I said, 'Yeah, David, you are right," she said. The couple married in 1980 and have three sons -- Darrick, 17, Nicholas, 15, and Matthew, 12.

They moved to New Jersey 13 years ago, lived in Denville before moving to Randolph two years ago.

A dedicated runner who completed 20 marathons, all in less than three hours, Mr. Carlone proposed to his wife the night before his first marathon.

"He proposed, gave me my ring and then we went to kiss, and he stopped and kissed my cheek. He said, 'This is my first marathon, and I've worked really hard for this. I can't afford to catch your germs,' " his wife said. "He wouldn't kiss me because I had a cold."

Above all else, Mr. Carlone enjoyed spending time with his sons, and coached their soccer, baseball, football and basketball teams through the years.

Mr. Carlone also is survived by his father, Joseph; his brother, Joseph; and two sisters, Joan Napp and Paula Bellamare, all of Waterbury, Conn. Mr. Carlone's mother, Anna, died of kidney failure five days after the attack. She was not told of her son's death. A week later, his brother, Nicholas, 51, of Hudson, N.H., died of complications from brain cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Randolph High School auditorium. Visitation is from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Current and former athletes are asked to wear their jerseys.

Donations can be made to the American Red Cross Liberty Fund, 64 Holmes Ave., Waterbury, Conn. 06710, or to the Carlone Children Trust Fund, c/o Sovereign Bank, 430 State Highway 10, Randolph, N.J. 07869.

Although I'm no artist, I drew David's name for the "Voices of Resilience" art project years ago. I imagined him as a joyful chickadee flying over country fields, then pausing to visit three "son"flowers. I pray for God's comfort and care for the Carlone family, especially on 9/11. We will never forget.

I was very ill and in the hospital on 9/11 and wasn't told about for days. I didn't know Dave. I never knew he lost a brother or his mom died shortly after him. I know and love his brother Joe and am so sorry I wasn't a part of his memorial. It's a terrible void in my life.

My brother, W. David Bauer, also died on 9/11 he was in the first tower. He worked for Cantor. We went to Mass this morning and they asked us to pick names of victims to pray for today and I picked David Carlone. I googled David and he sounded like a great man. Dedicated to his wife and kids. I have been praying for David and his family. God Bless....Heidi Bauer-Pollard

While visiting the 9/11 Memorial last month, I looked for and found David's name on the South Pool Panel and paid my respects. I did not know David but I met his dad at my dad's home in Waterbury in 2002 and learned of your family's tragic loss. David and all those who lost their lives that dreadful day will forever be remembered.

May peace be with you.

I recently attended a 10 year memorial in Saint Louis, Missouri paying tribute to those who lost their lives on 9-11. There was a flag for each person that was lost that day. I can not describe the feeling that came over me as I stood on that hill amongst over 3000 flags. At the end of the memorial I was honored to get one of the flags, my flag represented David Carlone. I have been reading the internet and all the entries here and want Mr. Carolone's family to know I will cherish this flag forever and will pass it on to my family along with the information I have been able to find out about your loved one so his memory will live on. May God Bless each of you.

Dave Carlone is still missed by all of us. Although it has been almost nine years I still pray and think of Dave. I worked with him at Protection Mutual and FM Global. Dave was a very human down to earth guy and maybe that is why he touched all of our hearts. My friend Rocky Pacheco and I recently spoke of Dave. We miss him.

September 11, 2009

I still remember how he always smiled.

Dave and I grew up together in his old neighborhood. We became friends in kindergarden and remained friends through high school.

Dave was one of the finest people I ever knew and I think of him often. My heart goes out to his family.

Although I did not see him much after high school I always considered him a close friend. I can still see us playing sports outside as little kids.

May his family always be safe and well.

You've moved into the hearts and minds of many school children. Each year when my school remembers those lost on September 11th, they continue to hear about a very, very good man named David Carlone. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.

They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole

They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

May David's hard work and determination, his life and love live on in all who love him. May you always feel the warmth of his love penetrate love deep into your hearts. We are very sorry for your loss of David. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
