Ana Centeno Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
'Like a Sister'
If you could not find Ana Centeno in her office at Marsh & McLennan, then she was one of two places: at the gym, or on the track at Hudson County Park in Bayonne, N.J. An avid runner, Ms. Centeno spent so much time running that her family held a candlelight memorial service on the track at Hudson County Park, and her picture is still there.

"She had dancing eyes," her brother, Jesus Centeno, said. "She was very athletic and when she went for something, she achieved it."

Ms. Centeno, 38, was an accountant and a good friend to many. "It's hard to be without her," said Diana Rodriguez, who said Ms. Centeno "was just like a sister to her" even when she had just begun to date Jesus Centeno years ago. "Ana was just Ana, lovable, sweet. She made me feel comfortable when I first met her 17 years ago and we'd been like sisters ever since."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 9, 2001.

Ana Centeno, 38, dedicated to fitness and children

Ana Centeno was a woman who was born to run.

There she went -- her tall, muscular silhouette sprinting through Liberty State Park many evenings after work, leaving the world behind her.

"They called her the bionic woman," said her boyfriend, Ed Pulver. "She was 110 percent physique."

She even walked fast, moving briskly along New York's sidewalks as she made her way to work on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center, where she was employed by an accounting firm. She was in the building on Sept. 11 when a hijacked airliner crashed into the tower.

Ms. Centeno, 38, was proud of her strapping build, working out at a gym in Bayonne most evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. with her younger brother Jesus Centeno. Her abdomen, said her sister Angie Rivera, was tight and hard like a washboard.

The strenuous workout regiment provided a kind of therapy, said Rivera, who remembers Ms. Centeno as the most energetic of the Centeno siblings.

Born in Puerto Rico, Ms. Centeno was the fourth of eight children. When she was in elementary school, she and her family moved to Jersey City.

Because she was so energetic and loved to run, her siblings often designated her to take care of errands.

"She was always into sports since she was little," said Angie Rivera. "She was very agile."

Although she excelled in school, she was reluctant to pursue a higher education degree immediately after she graduated from high school. So Ms. Centeno worked as a secretary for several years before attending New Jersey City University.

She received a degree in business and passed her CPA examination -- on her first try, Pulver said proudly.

During her spare time, Ms. Centeno loved to sketch portraits and spend time with her large brood of nieces and nephews. Although she never had children of her own, Ms. Centeno dedicated herself to children's causes, using the races she ran to raise money for children's groups.

She was supposed to run a half marathon on Sept. 30. Instead, her brother and running partner Jesus Centeno ran it in her memory.

"She was the strongest one of the family," he said. "She was the one who made the family stand up."

In addition to her brother and sister, Ms. Centeno is survived by her mother, Antonia Torres of Puerto Rico; sisters Margarita Perez of Jersey City, Ana Luz Centeno of Puerto Rico and Maria Paraza of Jersey City; and brothers Havier Massa of Jersey City and Harry Massa of New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Anna Centeno Fund, 99 Montgomery St., Jersey City, N.J. 07302.

A memorial visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave., Jersey City.

I was honored to participate in a 9/11 remembrance ride for 2014 and chose Ana as the individual to "ride with me". It was my great privilege to be able to have her name written on a paper that I could attach to my riding vest as I participated. Ana would've been 51 this year had she been able to really ride with me. But I felt compelled to write a quick letter to let you know that she hasn't been forgotten. I kept her in my heart as I rode and will reflect on her frequently now because of this great opportunity. I am sorry she did not survive that tragic day 13 years ago, but I would hope her family and loved ones understand that now, because of this remembrance ride, her memory continues on with me.

To a great friend in High School, class of 1981. I always remember you and pray that the family is okay. It'll be the 10 year anniversary and when I type your name I see the articles and videos, bringing flashback of the event. I remember you and your sisters taking a walk through the Van Vorst Park towards the library or going to school as I lived across the park. You would stop and say hello. I also saw you jogging on several occasions. We would talk and catchup during this time. You even told me we might be related but I never understood how. I now see that you have 2 brothers whose names are Massa. You are a wonderful lady, inspiring and I will always remember you. I speak of you to my children as a reminder that you have a presence. May God Bless your Family and Peace on Earth. --The Masa Family September 2011

Ana was a rock solid member of the Forum Fitness Center in Bayonne. The lady was a bionic woman she never quit and always had a smile on her face. The gym was empty the night of the memorial service at the Track at Stephen Gregg Park. A very touching ceremony it was Jesus nice Job!

On Monday night, September 10th, 2001, I was at the gym with Ana. She was helping me use the Nautilus machines. When I left she said, "See you tomorrow?" "Yes", I said, "See you tomorow." And then tomorrow never happened. She was a good person and I'll never forgot her.

Hi Titi Mel,

I miss you so much. You have done so much for me since i was a child and even to this day. i think of you all the time and the dreams i have of you visiting and talking to me in my dreams fell so real. Just like the most recent one when you told me in my dream that the baby will be a girl and she will be tough like you. It still hurts that I couldn't see you at the birthday party in liberty park the weekend before the whole 9/11 happened but at least I still see you in my dreams.

Love always,

Dear Ana,

Though I had not seen you in years since we Graduated H.S. I was deeply moved to find out your life was lost on 9/11, I never thought I will be touch by the tragedy, but found out days later I also, lost two cousins, I never got to meet on that tragic day. I missed seeing you at the 23rd High School Reunion

which was this passed weekend and I thought about you and remembered you with some other former classmates. You will be thought of often in prayer and may you rest in peace. To your loved ones you left behind I pray for you and May God Bless You All.

I still can not believe you are gone but, I just think of you gone on vacation and still have not returned home. I am so happy you came to my wedding. You danced your favorite song with the whole family, it was great spending that special day with you. The last time I saw you and told I do not know how many times I LOVED YOU was the special BDay party you and your sisters had for your mom and one of my favorite Aunts. I had so much fun with you that day and I hugged you so many times. Iam so glad I got to spend that great evening with you and especially I thank god I got to tell you so many times that night how much I LOVE YOU! I will never forget you cousin I LOVE YOU and MISS YOU SO MUCH!!!

Ana,

How can I forget the times when I'd visit Angie and we would always end up in your house depriving Mr. Pulver of sleep. It was always like a party. I specially remember every Fall the Cancer Society Dinner - those were great times.

You were taken away from us, but will never be forgotten.

I told my son that you are the Angel that is watching over him...he just smiled and said "I know Mom".

Take care my friend, I will always remember your beautiful personality.

i did not know ana or any of the family. i go to a catholic college prep school for young women in texas. today for a 9/11 memorial service, we prayed for the lives lost, and recieved wrist bands with the names of people who lost their lives. i recieved a band with ana's name on it, and i have her and the family in my prayers and in my thoughts. We were friends from childhood. All those days working on Montgomery Street. I was always so proud of you working and going to school for as long as I knew you. You were always so smart. My mom, Ed, Walter, Rudy, Mr. Davis & Mr. Epps so many nights and so many laughs. The stupid float rides to the parades at the shore. Now my mom is the only one of you guys left I hope your all together in heaven sitting around Ed's desk still laughing and joke like old times. God bless you and them.

Anna,

I remembered you from high school and was very sad to hear how this terrible tragedy struck you as well. One thing I will always remember was your friendly smile. As we graduated, many went our separate ways, but the memories always stay in our hearts. May God strengthen your family through this great loss. I am sure you are very much missed.

Ana's dancing eyes and determination to accomplish goals are reflections of her warm heart. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Ana. May her running abilities, her life and love live on in you. May the sorrow of your hearts be lightened by warm memories of precious times shared with her. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
