Nestor Cintron Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
Hooked on Books
"I just want books, Ma," Nestor A. Cintron III would say.

Growing up in the Alfred E. Smith Houses in a tough part of the Lower East Side, Mr. Cintron was the resident intellectual. "My son didn't take any drugs; he had no bad habits; his thing was reading," his mother, Alicia Leguillow, recalled.

"For Christmas, I would get him $200 gift certificates to Borders and he would buy books."

Mr. Cintron, 26, a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, read anything, but preferred books that were other-worldly: Carl Sagan, Michael Crichton and Robert Jordan were his favorite writers. He was a huge "Star Wars" buff.

He got his two younger brothers hooked, too, to the point where they would all sit at the dinner table reading. "They were never raised by a father, so they had each other," Mr. Cintron's mother said.

Ms. Leguillow knew her son was gifted from childhood, when a teacher at Public School 1 insisted on skipping him from the fourth to the sixth grade, because he was so far ahead in math. But he was still one of the guys.

"He had so much intelligence, he didn't need to show it," said his brother Fred Gonzalez Jr.

Remember the sweetest, kindness and nicest person in high school. He was so smart and cute, all the girls in our high school class had a crush on him. I am sad that he left this world too young. He may not have lived into old age, he certainly left his impact on so many people, even 20 years after his passing. May he Rest in Peace, and continue to watch over and protect his love ones from heaven.

To my dear uncle who died It breaks my heart that I can't see you. I miss and cry about you all the time. Even tho I never met you. Now I know where I get my love in books from. I'm only 12 and I'm here telling you I will never forget you. You mean everything. I hope I get to see you one day. I'm always here. I don't like to watch videos on how many possible ways you could've left this world because it makes me sad. I'm proud to be a Cintron. I love you so much Uncle. Te amo mucho siempre. Fifteen years later, and I still remember Nester, whom I never met, but saw daily in 'missing' posters around the city. We shared the same birthday, and to this day, I honor and celebrate your [too short] life. Bless you, dear one, may your family know peace and find joy again. Knowing you loved books, as I write my own, I strive to write one you'd have loved to read.

Long after we leave this Earth, there are echoes of us that remain. That resound in the heart and minds of our friends and family, we are not truly gone and forgotten. We have been transformed, maybe into light. Maybe a butterfly. It is simply, transmigration. -Bernadette E. Carter Poem dedicated to a fallen classmate

I have been wearing this bracelet everyday for the past years to remind me to be the best that I can be. Thank man. You are missed.

Nestor and I went to HS together and we were in the honors program together. I loved His smile and the quiet gentle way he always made everything seem like it would be ok. He was quite a joker as well and could always make me laugh. In the days after 9/11 I was near union square and I saw a flyer with Nestor's face on it. I felt like the breath had been sucked out of me. God had me realize years later, the He only plucks the best and brightest flowers for his garden in heaven. Take comfort in Knowing Nestor is shining with his heavenly Father.

Dear Alicia,
We have been thinking of you for so many years, and are so grateful for the beautiful tributes you wrote for our son, Christopher Ingrassia. After 911 we tried to see if your son, Nestor, had been at the WTC. We were using the last name of LeGuillow as we did not know that Nestor's last name was Cintron. We were happy to think that somehow he survived. It is with great sadness that we found this website for Nestor, and we wish to say how truly sorry we are for your great loss. Nestor had so may attributes similar to our Chris (smart, kind and a true gentleman)that we were brought to tears reading about the loss of such a wonderful man.
We published a book that contains all the letters we received concerning Chris, and we included your beautiful tributes. We would like to send you a copy. If you would like one, please email us your address.
With much love,
Gloria & Anthony Ingrassia

I didn't speak to you much or even knew much about you, but my husband John;your cousin, has spoken great things about you. Stories about spending time together as kids, treasured moments in time that nobody can take away. I could have only wished to have know you myself, time passes and families grow apart when they shouldn't. But, one thing that never goes away is LOVE, no matter if time is lost LOVE and MEMORIES live forever. You are one of God's angels, and I know you are in good company with your grandmother and uncle. You are in heaven guiding and protecting you family and friends. Rest in Peace. You will never be forgotten, believe that.

Hi Nestor it is your mother speaking to you. Today date is February 19, 2003. I still wait for you to come into the door. I still have hope that maybe it is all a dream and I haven't woke up from it. My dreams are so real seeing myself still getting dress to go to work and be with all you guys. I dream with most of the guys asking me to come and help them, but I too can not find them. I wish I could help all of you in some way. If you know how I could come and help you please give me a sign. Your brothers are still waiting for you to call them to come and rescued you. I still speak to your girl friend and she has a hard time going on. I know how hard it is for her because I too can not except it.

Well, my love I hope to see you in my dreams if it's the only way to communicate. Please continue to come into my dreams and all the guys too. I love you my sweet angel.

To Nestor's family-

I think of nestor often and although he and I were not friends at Colgate, he touched my life while I was there. I remember one Columbus day on campus, he was part of an awareness rally/protest which blocked the student center. i felt so ignorant that I did not even understand what there was to protest. As I approached the student center to pick up my mail, I was met with some unfriendly stares as I looked on with confusion at the emotion I saw on those steps. I made eye contact with Nestor and he was a warm face in a sea of fear for me. He asked me if I knew why they were there, and when I admitted I did not, he explained to me the reasons for their presence. I don't know if he ever knew my name, but I always remembered him for that little piece of education I will carry with me. I was so saddened to hear of his passing as I knew, though our interaction was brief, that this was going to be one very successful person. I am glad to hear that he lived his life to the fullest and proved himself in everything that he did. His life is a tribute to all those who strive to make the world a better place. Please know that the thoughts and prayers of the entire country are with his family and friends today.

Nestor,
Although I shared four years with you at Colgate, I will always remember our first year together... you, Lila, and I :) You always made us laugh...we had so much fun! You were a gentlemen (chilvary lives on!), a rebel (LASO on Columbus Day), and an intellect. But above all...you were a great friend. I will remember you for your quiet, tranquil, sweet demeanor. And although we lost touch along the years, you are always in my thoughts. May God keep you in his care.

Dear Nestor:

Although I briefly knew you, as one of Ana's maids of honor, where you were one of Joe's bestmen, I saw you as a very kind and softspoken man. Your family and friends were very proud of the man you had become, and they miss you now very much. The world is a sadder place without you. We have comfort in knowing that in heaven you are free from pain and suffering, and are looking down on us with your great smile.

Your life and legacy will continue to live on through your family and friends, may you rest in peace Nestor.

Nestor,

I was fortunate enough to meet you, get to know you, and graduate with you. I will never forget all our times at Asia House. There are tons of pictures of you in my photo albums. We are very sorry for your loss of Nestor. May his enjoyment for reading and knowledge, his life and love live on in those who love him. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. May the sorrow you feel today be lightened by the warm memories of the yesterdays shared with Nestor. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
