Robert Cirri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
A Second Turn at Love

Robert and Eileen Cirri met when she was an emergency room nurse and he was moonlighting as a paramedic. "There was this weird, electric charge," Mrs. Cirri said. She had not believed in love at first sight until then.

It was the second marriage for both. The Cirris had a merged family, with three of her children and three of his, ages 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12.

Lieutenant Cirri, a member of the Port Authority Police Department, had about 10 ham radios operating at their home in Nutley, N.J., and helped shore up the state's emergency communications systems. One of the repeaters he set up for the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management was working on Sept. 11, with his voice, and his friends are keeping it. "His voice is still going on, as we speak," Mrs. Cirri said. "It's still keying up every 15 minutes on that repeater, out in space forever."

She found another remnant of him when she tried to log on to his e-mail and found he had chosen her first name as his password.

Lieutenant Cirri's body was found with the bodies of four other officers and that of a woman they had been trying to carry out in a rescue chair.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on April 21, 2002.

Lt. Robert Cirri, 39, died helping others

The day of the World Trade Center attack, Eileen Cirri received a call from her husband, Lt. Robert Cirri, a Port Authority police officer.

He said he was a couple of blocks away, saw people running and was planning to help.

"He told me he was safe but that he couldn't watch people running out of the building," Eileen Cirri said. "He said he needed to go help."

Reports say Mr. Cirri gathered a group of fellow officers and led an expedition into the North Tower to try and help people. He lost his own life when the tower collapsed.

"I'm not surprised at all," said Lt. Paul Haggerty of the Lyndhurst Police, one of Robert Cirri's best friends. "That's just the type of guy he was."

From his work as a police officer to his part-time gig as a paramedic and even his hobby as a ham radio operator, friends and family say Mr. Cirri, a 39-year-old Nutley resident, lived to help others.

When he wasn't training other officers for the Port Authority, Mr. Cirri spent part of his weekends as a paramedic at Hackensack University Medical Center.

"He loved helping people and he was a good leader," Eileen Cirri said.

Haggerty said he and Mr. Cirri started their ham radio operation as a hobby, but that he soon realized he could help people at the same time.

Both men became a part of Jersey Coastal Emergency Services, a nonprofit organization that monitors emergency airwaves.

"He wanted to look out for the public," Haggerty said.

Mr. Cirri was also a good father to his two children and three stepchildren, bringing them all together on the weekends.

And his willingness to help others didn't stop with the public. Once, one of Mr. Cirri's children began choking on a hot dog. Eileen Cirri, at that time an emergency room nurse, lost her cool and panicked, but not Mr. Cirri.

"He was sitting at the table, popped a piece of steak into his mouth, calmly got up and performed the Heimlich Maneuver without missing a beat," Eileen Cirri said. "It doesn't surprise me at all what he did Tuesday."

Mr. Cirri is survived by his two children, Robert Jr. and Jessica, of West New York; three stepchildren, Bianca Jerez, Francesca Jerez and Kara Jerez of Nutley; and his parents, Maria and Dominick Cirri of Guttenberg. Services are pending.

Please join us on Friday, September 10, at 8:30 a.m. in front of the flag pole by the main entrance of the medical center as we gather for a memorial service commemorating the ninth anniversary of 9-11. We will pay tribute to all of those who lost their lives on that tragic day. This year, we are also honoring Robert D. Cirri, a Hackensack University Medical Center Paramedic and Port Authority Police Lieutenant, who selflessly answered the call of duty in order to save the lives of others in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Mr. Cirri paid the ultimate sacrifice and his friends and colleagues want to honor his memory and his family by dedicating the Paramedic Robert D. Cirri Memorial Way – the entranceway to HUMC’s Emergency Trauma Department.

Thank You To The Men & Women from HUMC who did this Great Dedication in Memory of a Good Friend and Brother
I WISH I WAS INFORMED EARLIER ON DEDICATION

Though I didn't know Lt. Robert D. Cirri personally, I felt the need to sign his guest book since I am a life-long resident of Nutley. We all know and understand how tragic 9/11 was, but when you look at the thousands of names and pictures here on Legacy.com, the reality of the lives lost and its consequences to the families and friends hits you like a ton of bricks. I pray for the Cirri family and wish them some peace in knowing that he was lost doing what he loved best... helping others. God be with you and give you strength during this blackened moment in your lives.

To the family of Robert Cirri:

I was so saddened to hear the name of Robert Dominic Cirri read out on Sept. 11, 2002. I worked with Robert's dad, Dominic, at Christian Herald years ago, and knew immediately that this was his beloved son that he spoke of so often. Dominic always said that Robert (who was then a teenager) wanted to be an EMT more than anything else in the world, that even at that young age he knew that he wanted to help people. From reading the tributes to this exceptional person, that is exactly what he did.

To Robert's wife and children, my heart goes out to you all and I pray that God will comfort you somehow. To Dominic and Maria, words fail me. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I don't know what else to say to you except that I am so very, very sorry for the huge loss that you have all suffered.

I have a dog tag with Lt. Cirri's name on it. I have never met him, so it was nice to read the article about him. I did meet his partner, David, at a fire station in Canton, Ohio, after the Hall of Fame parade. I wear his tag, along with tags for a firefighter, Army man, and Navy man, all the time, and he has been with me in spirit to a lot of interesting places (like Canton). My condolences to his family - he sounds like a great person.

The death of a giving and caring person shakes the roots of our faith in a good and loving G-d. But it also serves to remind us that our existence here is transitory, when viewed in the context of eternity; the only thing we take with us is an account of the good deeds we did while we were here. Lt. Cirri had those in abundance, and his memory will live on.

As I sit and read the beautiful tributes to this heroes of America, I am brought to tears. As a young mother and the sister of a police officer, I fully understand the fears that come to the families who are involved in law enforcement. But even more so, I know the feeling of pride and honor of being able to associate with men and women of this calibur. They are a rare breed indeed who can truly walk in these shoes. I didn't know Lt. Cirri, but to his friends and family I would like to say I am so sorry. And thank you for allowing us, as Americans, to share in your pain and also your celebration of his life. Remember that we will not forget in one, five, or fifty years. My thought and prayers are with you always. I only wish I could do more.

We are deeply sorry for our nation's loss of Robert. We thank him with all our hearts for dedicating his life to protect others as a policeman. Such a dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May his courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Robert. Our hearts cry deeply in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I wear this band and pray for the family of Lt. Cirri. I wonder what he was like, who he loved and who loved him. I think about what his favorite toothpaste might have been or what shows he liked to watch on television, or what events were part of his favorite memory. Did he like the snow, did he travel, did he go to church? Although I know none of these things and can only identify him by the name etched on the piece of silver I wear on my wrist, I will remember his sacrafice and celebrate his spirit. May he rest in peace.
