Conrod Cottoy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
A Respectful Son
When Paula Hayes came to New York from Louisiana in the summer of 1975, she intended only to have a vacation. But she met Conrod Cottoy at the First Baptist Church in Brooklyn; on Valentine's Day 1976, they married.

"He had all the qualities I was looking for," she said. "He believed in God and education, and he respected his mother. I never met a man who respected his mother more than he did. I figured, if he respects his mother, he respects other women."

Mr. Cottoy, 50, an analyst at Carr Futures, was born in Trinidad; he had lived in the United States for more than 30 years and had settled in Brooklyn. He held degrees in accounting and history, and, like a sponge, he soaked up knowledge of the world's cultures and religions. He had traveled the Nile River and visited the Sphinx and the pyramids.

The couple's four sons knew that if they brought home low grades, TV would be banned. And they knew that their father would not sleep until they were all home and accounted for. His affinity for Africa was evident in the names he gave his younger sons: Kojo, which means "born on Monday," and Ngozi, which means "blessing."

Conrad was such a hard working employee. I tried unsuccessfully to get him transferred to Citigroup´s Credit Department in 2000. Having an Accounting degree, he was overqualified to be a margin clerk, hence he got a job with Carr Futures. I was devastated to learn that Conrad perished in 9/11.

Uncle kofi you are missed and will forever be remembered. Uncle kofi picked us up on weekends, took us fishing, football practice and educated us on our history as African men.. we love you uncle kofi and I know that Ngozi and Obhanjoko are with you safe and loved..

You are still missed There's such a struggle with us all with trying to understand and deal with. There's no answer, no real relief, only excruciating pain and sorrow. There's no one to replace you. There's no point trying to look because they just don't add it to your standards nor quality of life. Now we have only 2 sons here missing you, still loving you and missing out on the joy of having their father to call and have a meaningful conversation with. Time truly doesn't heal at all. What a fairytale. We love you infinitely. . God please continue to rest your soul, alone with your 4th born son, now your first born son. Tears never cease to stop flowing. Lord have mercy. Amen.

I knew Conrod back when we began at E. F. Hutton in 1980. We were supposed to share a hotel room in East Brunswick during the NYC Transit strike, but he made other plans at the last minute. I even gave him an assist in getting his job at Smith Barney. He was a great guy to be around, personably. He was conscientious about his work. Most of all, he cared deeply about his children. He would speak of them constantly with me, telling me his attitudes and beliefs about their education and welfare. We should have many more of his caliber. Conrod will be greatly missed.

As a former colleague of Conrad's at Smith Barney I found him a very pleasant man. He always had a kind word. Conrad was talented and hard working and often spoke very proudly of his family. I am lucky to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family. God bless you all and rest assured that although he is greatly missed he is watching from better place.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Conrod. Our hearts cry with you. May warm memories of times shared with Conrod lighten the sorrow in your hearts.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

My condolences to the Cottoy family. I remembered him during my days at Salomon Smith Barney. The last time I saw him was in August of 1999 when I said farewell to my former co-workers. He was a wonderful man of utmost respect and he will be sorely missed. God bless you all!
