Comforting Routines

Every morning, Theresa Hepburn and her two girls would drive Robert A. Hepburn to the train station in Union, N.J., where they lived, for his commute into the city. It was just one of the many routines that defined their family life.

Another unfolded after he settled into his office. He would call every day around 8 a.m. to make sure that Allyson, 6, and Jennifer, 4, were ready for school. And he would always ask what they wanted him to bring them that night. "They always wanted gum or candy," his wife said.

When he returned home, he would take care of the girls so their mother could go to her evening job.

Mr. Hepburn, 39, was an office service manager for Marsh USA, a job he had held for only two months. He worked on the 93rd floor of 1 World Trade Center, and his desk was against a window with a view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and of course he shared it with his family. During the summer, Mrs. Hepburn and the girls took the train into the city every Thursday for lunchtime concerts downtown.

"He would go down to our train and meet us and put us in our seats, and then he'd go back upstairs to work," she recalled. "Then he'd come down during his lunch hour and watch the rest of the show with us."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on November 2, 2001.

Robert Hepburn, 39, was there for his girls

Robert "Hep" Hepburn was known for his routines.

Every morning, the Union Township man would call his daughters from work, ask if they were giving their mom a hard time, and ask what daily treat they wanted from New York City, said his wife, Theresa.

Every day, Mr. Hepburn would call at about 11:30 a.m. and ask 4-year-old Allyson how her school day went. He'd call back at 3:30 and ask 6-year-old Jennifer the same thing.

"He'd call at 5:30 to tell us what train he would be on," Theresa Hepburn said. "That was an everyday thing. He was great with the kids. I couldn't ask for a better father. He basically did everything for them."

On Sept. 11, the girls were expecting their father to bring them gum. Mr. Hepburn would not make the trip home. He was on the 93rd floor of One World Trade Center when terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into the building. He was 39.

That morning, Mr. Hepburn had decided to take the later train to his job at Marsh & McLennan, where he was office service manager, his wife said. Still, he had managed to call the girls that morning before they dashed off to school.

Though he had only been on the job two months, Mr. Hepburn loved it, said his mother, Marilyn Hepburn.

"He was so happy," she said from her home in Spring Hill, Fla. "They gave him an office right at the window, looking at the Statute of Liberty.

"He would say, 'Mom, I'm on top of the world,' " she added. "It just seemed that his job had so much promise . . . He was going to make changes."

Mr. Hepburn's wife said her husband was well prepared for the position. He had started in the mailroom at Amerada Hess Corp. in Woodbridge and over 14 years, had worked his way up to manager.

Theresa Hepburn said she met her husband at the Hess office building. Years later, she found out that their meeting had really been a prank.

"It was a bet with all the guys in the mailroom," she said. They had challenged him to ask her out. The pair married Aug. 14, 1993.

Their family routine also included annual trips to his parents' home in Florida. They were scheduled to travel there this month, his mother said.

He loved his mother's cooking. "He would always say, 'I can't wait, Mom. I've got my menu all ready for you,' " Marilyn Hepburn added.

In addition to his wife, daughters and mother, Mr. Hepburn is survived by his father, Alexander; and three brothers, Alexander Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., and John and David, both of Union Township.

A memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. tomorrow at Tonwley Presbyterian Church, 829 Salem Road, Union Township.

Hello my brother. Hello my good friend.
This morning I tuned in the live broadcast of the 9/11 memorial service in Manhattan and was able to hear your name read aloud. Thirteen years now and I still tear up. There is some solace knowing you have family and friends who remember you many more times throughout the year, than only on this sad anniversary. Thoughts of you continue to enter my mind almost daily. I often think about how much better my life would have turned out had you been allowed to live yours. I miss you Bob and I always will.

I had a dream (visit) from my friend Bob the eve of the 11th...It was as if we had just seen each other the other day..he looked wonderful, young and so very happy..I do not remember much about the conversation, I just remember his huge smile, sparkling presence and this unbelievable *aura* of happiness and light surrounding him. I believe he wanted me to let his family & friends know that he is safe and well and is with you always...God Bless...

I don’t know if you are Roberts wife or another relative, however this past August I partook in an amazing journey with Robert next to my heart the entire time. I rode in the Americas 9/11 foundation 10th annual motorcycle ride. Roberts name was the one given to me to ride for. I started in Leesburg, VA and rode to Shanksville, PA where we laid a wreath in honor of those victims and then continued on to Washington, DC and did the same for the victims of the Pentagon site. From the Pentagon we rode into NYC almost 3,000 strong to pay our respects at ground zero. This journey was not only humbling but so meaningful I will never forget it as long as I live. For the entire 4 day ride, I do not believe an entire mile passed without someone stopping on the side of the road, standing on a bridge or overpass, and even sitting in traffic who didn’t wave an American flag or hold up a sign that they will never forget. I had Robert with me in my heart and his card with me the entire ride. At points riding for that distance and for that long was very painful, but I just kept thinking that I was sure all of Roberts family and friends would have taken on that discomfort 10 times over to have him back. So in my mind it was a small sacrifice to pay to honor one of our American heroes. I Keep Roberts card in my office on my desk and see it every day. I know it’s not much but even 10 years later Robert is not forgotten even by a complete stranger and I hope that gives you some comfort. My condolences and may his memory live on forever.

Respectfully,

Chris Martin

Theresa,

I don't know if you remember me. I worked for Bob in the mailroom at Hess around 1991-1993. I was heartbroken when I heard the news about Bob. He and I both loved the New York Rangers. I will miss him. I am now a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and will be praying that God will remove the pain from you and your family's hearts.

My prayers go out to the family of Robert Allan Hepburn. I'm a graduating senior this year and in rememberance of the people who died on that tragic day one year ago, my school gave each student a bracelet and on that bracelet was a name of a person who died. Well, the bracelet I got today had Robert Allan Hepburn's name on it. May God bless his family and bless all the people who lost their lives that fateful day.

On this somber day with ceremonies and bells I remember You and your family. I think of you Often and hope you and your girls become stronger every day. I knew you through your brother and attended your wedding with him. The best man speech that his brother gave him is to this day the best I've ever heard. I only knew him briefly but remember what a great guy he was.

May your girls bring you a lifetime of joy and carry on his legacy. Every time they smile he too will be smiling.

God bless You, Your family and All Americans as we as we pick ourselves back up on this journey to peace.

During Advent our church, St. Peter the Apostle/Shrine of St. John Neumann errected a manger near the altar with paper doves containing the names of those no longer with us after the 9/11 tragedy. Your husband's name was on the one I randomly chose and I continue to pray for him as well as the wellbeing of you and the children. Email me if I can help. Stay strong & God Bless, Linda La Rose

Dear Therea, Allyson and Jennifer:

My sincere condolences in your loss. I never knew Robert personally, but took the same train he did from the Roselle Park, NJ train station to NYC every morning. I admired and couldn't help notice how attentive he was to you, Allyson and Jennifer. He had a tremendous amount of love for you guys. Nothing I say will help alleviate your pain and suffering. I just wanted you to know that I shall always aspire to be the same loving husband and father he was. Feel free to write and let me know if there is anything I can do to cheer up your day.

We are very sorry for your loss of Robert. May his happiness, his life and love continue living in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Robert.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
