Emerita De La Pena Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 6, 2001.
Best Friends Forever
Emerita de la Pena and Judith Diaz-Sierra met in business school as teenagers and soon became best friends. Each was the maid of honor at the other's wedding, they vacationed together with their husbands, and they both worked as administrative assistants at Fiduciary Trust Company International, where Mrs. De la Peña had helped recruit Ms. Diaz-Sierra in 1997.

Mrs. De la Pena, 32, of Queens, known by her nickname, Emy, was the extrovert of the two. The mother of a 1-year-old daughter, Daniella, she wanted to become a schoolteacher and had been attending St. Francis College in Brooklyn part time to get a bachelor's degree. "She's beautiful and she was a beautiful person," said her husband, Gabriel.

Ms. Diaz-Sierra was reserved but "had a great laugh, a great heart, was very high in her morals and very selective about her friends," said her husband, Ron Sierra.

Ms. Diaz-Sierra, 32, worked one row away from her best friend on the 90th floor of 2 World Trade Center. A co-worker told Mr. Sierra the two were together when he last saw them on the day of the attacks, as they held the door open for him.

Mr. Sierra rushed to the city from Suffolk County, where he and his wife lived, after learning of the attack, but could not get onto the Brooklyn Bridge. As he watched the soot-covered people walking from Manhattan, he said, "I was just hoping that Emy and Judith would come out, that they were among the thousands crossing the bridge."

Today I took my 10 & 11year old to the memorial sight and thought of all the people of 9/11 and said a prayer for Gabriel and his family who I haven't seen since elementary school and as I looked at the names there was Emy De La Pena's name

I remember my mom telling me when I was older that a family who lived In Briarwood across the street from me was affected by 9/11. When I visited the memorial site in the city about 2 years ago I made sure to locate her name. Yesterday I went back to the memorial and searched both fountains till I spotted her name. Her name is on the second fountain on one of the corners depending on which way you are entering. I don't remember if I ever knew her husband since I was young. But I hope he is being a great father to his daughter. All the best.

I didn't know you, but I'm sorry your life ended so suddenly. I'm sorry for your family. Years ago I was looking for something to do to pay honor to the victims of this horrible tragedy. I signed up to make a square in the national tribute quilt and was given your name. I was honored to submit a quilt square in your name. I have thought of you since. We will not forget!

In January of 2002 I traveled to New York on a business trip. I was moved by the memorials and signs posted near the WTC site, and in particular, a fragment of a photo that I believe was of Emerita De la Pena, which I matched by looking through photos on CNN and this site. I wrote a short memorial at http://blog.chrisfreeland.com/2011/09/911-memorial.html about the photo, the smiling woman within, and what both have meant to me. I wish only to honor her memory and to offer my condolences to your family for such a tragic loss.

AQUINAS WINDOW OF PEACE and HOPE
Memorial Window contains steel from Twin towers

Since February 7th the Aquinas Honor Society students of the Immaculate Conception School of Jamaica Estates, NY have met every weekend to work on their Stained Glass Window of PEACE and HOPE project. (The entire project has been in the planning stage for two years.) Week by week they have witnessed the evolution of their hard work under the guidance of artist Mr. Mendoza and his family. It was a wonderful learning experience and all who attended have had their life changed profoundly.
It has been decided that on Sunday, April 26 at the 1PM Mass the Aquinas Stained Glass Window of PEACE and Hope would be dedicated and blessed at the Church of the Immaculate Conception 86-45 Edgerton Blvd., Jamaica Estates, NY 11432 (718) 739-0880. The window will be temporarily framed and light will pass through it for the first time. We hope you will come to this special occasion, meet the students and see this small little masterpiece of PEACE and HOPE. After the Mass there will be a presentation in the Parish Hall.
The Aquinas Honor Society is composed of academically gift students in Grades 6-8. They received a grant from the Alive in Hope Foundation to design and create a stained glass window for their school. Below is an early design and over time it has gone through a number of revisions.
In the left corner brilliant colors of red, yellow and orange glass with jagged shapes were used to represent chaos, sin, despair and economic woes. A rosary representing the power of prayer draws us into a field of blues and greens with a more composed pattern. The calmer shades of blue are the colors of the Blessed Mother Mary. The green color refers to the season of Spring, and a rebirth of hope. The image of the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove holds an olive branch in its mouth. Through the assistance of the Fire Department of New York City three pieces of steel from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were used to form the leaves. Carved in low relief are images of the school logo - ICS, the Passionist shield of the priests of the parish and the words PEACE and HOPE. The letter H of HOPE was made to resemble the image of the Twin Towers. They were created by Gray Glass of Queens Village. The words Sisters of Saint Joseph, founders of the Immaculate Conception School was engraved on the window. Also engraved were these names: Emerita “Emy” De La Pena, Firefighter Carl Bedigian, Hector Tamayo, Frederick Varacchi and Deputy Chief Orio Palmer, Battalion 7. All were taken from us on 9/11 and have a connection to the Immaculate Conception Parish and the Aquinas Honor Society. To honor all who perished and fought to save lives on that fateful day 9/11 the students have engraved the phrase ALL ARE REMEMBERED onto the window.
The window has been completed with Artist in Residence Ernesto Mendoza and his family who guided and trained the students in the art of Stained Glass making.
The students wish to thank all who have helped to make this Stained Glass Window possible.

Emy, I can’t believe six years, have passed since that awful day. I miss you so much. You were such a special person. It has taken me 6 years to finally write a few notes in your memorial. I miss you, my family and friends miss you, Gabe and Daniella miss you too. I just wish I would have taken the time to tell you how much you mean to me. I truly believe in my heart that we were blessed to have spent time with you. Love your cousin Alex.

Hello My name is Tracey Anne Smith I live in a place Near Liverpool England. I recently donated some menus of The windows on the world restaurant to the californian memorial project via a producer named Rick Law. In return he sent me a creditaion and aknowledgement also a Mercy Bracelet Bearing the name EMERITA 'EMY' DE LA PENA. I immediately felt a connection of some kind I cannot explain, a lovely feeling of happiness as I put this bracelet on to my surprise.I thought It would make me very sad. I wear it all the time and many people have asked who she is. I am not very good with computers and it has taken me a week to find these answers. She looks exactly how I imagined. I will now be able to tell everyone who she is. My thoughts and feelings are with emys' family. Kindest regards Tracey, Emy is beautiful.

Dear Gabriel,

I worked and currently still do work in the financial center and was there on 9/11. I have had a difficult time dealing with everything, but I am extremely overwhelmed at the fact that while doing research on 9/11 I came across Emerita De La Pena. I am stunned because not only did Emerita De La Pena and I share the same first name we also go by the same nickname (Emy) however I spell it with two m's (Emmy). I must say that I felt and extreme connection to her when I saw her picture, but I also felt overwhelmed with sadness. My name is Emerita (Emmy) Ruiz and I am 31 years old. I had to write to send my sincere condolences and to remind you that the victims of 9/11 will never be forgotten. God Bless you and your family.

Emy-

It's been 2 years since I've seen your beautiful smile, or picked up the phone to tell you one of my silly stories. Words cannot express how much I miss you. Although, we were only friends for five years, b/c of the closeness we shared...it felt like a lifetime. Do you know how many times I want to pick up the phone or send u an email about one of the dumb things Terry did? Or share with you Natalie's first giggle, first cereal feeding, etc., just like you shared those moments of your precious Daniella with me. Emy, I WILL NEVER forget you, and I will make sure that Natalie, knows her Titi Emy. Lastly, your precious "Pupa" is your spitting image and in a way she brings me comfort b/c I see you in her. She's beautiful........and rest in peace knowing, that although, your life lived was cut short, you lived a full life b/c of your biggest and most precious gift..............DANIELLA. You will always be here with us, b/c you are a part of Daniella.

Em, I LOVE YOU, and are truly and sincerely missed.........

All our love forever

We are reminded daily of your smile and giggle by your beautiful daughter. You always used that smile to cheer me up, I look up and know that somewhere you're smiling down on us.

Natalie would've adored her TiTi Emy. I did good didn't I, Em?

We miss you and love you always,

To the family of Emy,

I knew Emy from a long time ago. We used to live on the same street in the Bronx. I was friends with her Aunt who shares the same name Emerita. I did not learn of her tragic death until I had run into Emy's brother Joey and he had delivered this horrific news. I would just like to let Emys' Aunt Emerita and brother Joey know that I am thinking of Emy and I will forever have her in my thoughts and prayers. Emy's smile and personality were truely contagious! God Bless Emy's family, husband and daughter. Terri

Last night at my church, after we sang Amazing Grace, everyone read the names of the departed souls of September 11. I was given Emerita's name to read and just wanted to let the family know that we will never forget. Our church was packed; people standing, people crammed into the balcony, all praying for the city, for the departed and for their families. From a sorrowful New Yorker,

To Emy's Husband and Daughter,

I Was Emy's Public Speaking Professor at ST. Francis College. She was a very special person, and one that when I was having a rough day teaching the class (it was my first semester teaching there) she would smile and give me support to go on. I remember one day in class, we were doing our demonstration speeches and she in her fun way did a very creative speech. She took a co-worker and fellow student from class ( he was very streight laced) and gave him a full facial. We had a great laugh. She will live on forever in your hearts and your daughters heart. I really miss her her former Professor Dave.

Dearest Gabe,

Hi, It's me Liz-Bernie's Secretary at the SCA. That is where I had the pleasure of meeting you and later Emy. I have been thinking about you,Daniella and Emy a lot lately.. My prayers are with you guys all the time. The day of Emy's Memorial service, there was so much I wanted to say, but there were no words! I simply hugged you and I walked away and cried..for the events of that day are still unreal it still does not make sense. I guess we will always wonder "Why?"

I know that you are a great dad and Daniella is your strengh, and I Thank god that he gave you Daniella because you have her to kiss and hold, she is so tiny but she is your rock the reason to hold on. Emy was a beautiful girl that stole your heart and has the key. I am so happy that you experienced true love, for you were both wonderful people! Although, I had not seen you for a while, it was as if time had stood still when at the Memorial Service all your Friends from the SCA, reunited to express how much we cared for you, Emy, Daniella and the family.

God bless you and I pray that you, Daniella as well as the rest of your families are well.

Your Friend,

My dearest friend Emy:

I know that you are still with us, your family and friends. I know that you are Daniella's angel and am sure she feels your presence. You must also know how terribly you are missed by everyone. I for one never stop thinking about you. All the good times, the laughter and tears that we shared throughout the 14 years that we knew each other. I considered you my very best friend, like a sister and you will always remain that. No matter how much time had passed since we had spoken, we could always pick up the conversation from where we left off. I wish I could pick up the phone and continue our last conversation now, but I know I still can, simply by thinking of you.

You are the most beautiful, sweet and caring friend anyone could ever have...I miss you and I love you.

All of us will always be here for Daniella and Gabe.

Her beautiful daughter,my Goddaughter Daniella. Daniella is a spitting image of her beautiful mother. Each time I see her, I see your feistiness and your beautiful smile. I want you to know that Gabe,

IN OUR HEARTS

We thought of you with love today.

But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday.

And days before that too.

We think of you in silence.

We often speak your name.

Now all we have is memories.

And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake.

With which we'll never part.

God has you in his keeping.

We have you in our heart.

What a warm and beautiful smile with sparkling eyes Emy has in the picture you have shared with us. Such a smile and warm eyes can only be a reflection of her heart. We are very sorry for your loss of Emy. May her life and love live on in those who love her and in those who have been touched by her life. May the warmth of her heart radiate love into your hearts. We see your sorrow-

-the American people-
