Thomas DeAngelis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 6, 2001.
In the Thick of Things
Five years ago, when Thomas P. DeAngelis was promoted to battalion chief in the New York City Fire Department, his wife, Patty, told him: "You've been running into burning buildings for 22 years. But you're a battalion chief now, so you won't have to do that anymore."

In her heart, she knew better. Tommy DeAngelis would never send a firefighter into a building he had not personally entered and checked out. Around the East 51st Street firehouse in Manhattan, he was known as "Chuckles" because of his sunny good humor and his lust for life: sports, cooking, sailing, carpentry, writing. But when the alarm sounded, he would suddenly become all business.

Sometimes he would kick around the idea of retiring in a year or two — he was 51 — maybe to take up writing children's books. But, again, Mrs. DeAngelis knew better. "He loved being a firefighter way too much to ever quit early," she said.

On Monday, Sept. 10, she had lunch with him at their home in Westbury, on Long Island, before he headed into Manhattan to pull a 24-hour shift. "See you Tuesday night," she said as he left, giving him a kiss. "Be careful."

Another year goes by and as promised another entry to show we have not forgotten. Although we did not know the Chief personally, he was a brother to this family of firefighters. How ironic that we would share the same last name. DeAngelis; meaning of the angels, a messenger or an angelic person. I consider the chief to be an angel watching over this firefighter family and that is a comforting feeling. Again, our deepest sympathies to the family of Chief Thomas DeAngelis.

I found an old photograph from our High School graduation from Molloy in June 1968. It shows Tom and I walking off the stage after receiving our diplomas. We were in alphabetical order by last name and we were walking in line. The picture was taken with an old Instamatic camera and the face details are not real clear. I scanned the picture as a PDF and unfortunately this site cannot save pictures in this format.

It was in the pre-moustache days for both of us.
I remember we both used to go to the school library at lunch time to read the Hot Rod magazines.

Mrs.DeAngelis,

My name is Pam gross I am a New Yorker but I have lived in Sarasota Florida for many years.

My daughter and I took a trip to Aspen five years ago, arriving just prior to the anniversary of 9/11. The fire department created such an extraordinarily beautiful tribute, that to this day I am reminded how we can lose people and yet have them right here with us.

In the Tribute, they had a Fireman's boot displayed for each firemen who was killed on 9/11. Inside the boot, they placed beautiful red roses with a name in a photograph of the firemen; I was fortunate enough to pick up your husband's rose and his picture.

When I returned home, I had them laminated so that I would never forget. I keep this piece in a trunk in my bedroom together with all my children's photographs.

I pulled him out today and sat him in the living room while I was watching the history channel; for the last three hours have been sharing human stories of how people pull together to help each other during this crisis.

Both my son and my son-in-law are law enforcement officers and I feel that there has always been a tie between fireman, paramedics and law-enforcement. I guess what I'm trying to say, awkwardly, is that I am thinking about you and I will always have your husbands photograph and rose in my trunk. I pray that you and yours are living your best lives.

Thank you for your husband's service.

This is a double coincidence. The previous message is exactly what happened to me when I visited the memorial. I walked over to the pool and while looking into the water I placed my hand down, later looking down, and my hand was on Thomas name. My mothers maiden name was diangelis. I have always been proud of it. There is something very spiritual happening here. May he rest in peace.

Dear DeAngelis family,
This past weekend I visited the memorial. I was overwhelmed with name after name. I couldn't help but stop to think that behind every name was a history and a family. I took several pictures to remember, and today as I looked through them I came across Thomas' name. I wanted somehow to put a face to a name so I looked up his name to see if I could find anything. I was glad that I was able to get to know just a little about him. You must have been very proud. I want you to know that you were in my thoughts and prayers today. We will never forget the sacrifice he made.

We owe so much to you for all you've given up to serve the people around you. I never knew him but I feel like I saw his smiling face as I grew up around town. I feel like they don't make people like him anymore. I can only hope to raise my son in the shadow of the street sign that bares his name, and use his life as a model on what we should all strive for.
I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I hope time has eased the pain even if only a little bit.

Tommy and I went to High School together at Molloy. Our graduation pictures were on the same page of the 1968 yearbook. I remember telling Tommy I was going to Florida for college. He said "cool". Tommy was a quiet guy in high school but he sure achieved a lot becoming a battalion chief. I've since met other NYFD personnel in Florida and when I mention his name one fellow shook my hand and said Tommy trained him. Tommy left a quiet legacy which is perfect for the kind of guy he was.

Ten years ago I felt compelled to write to the wife of Thomas P DeAngelis, Patty DeAngelis, when I came across his name in the sad long list of deceased victims of 9/11/01. I wrote to Patty to express my deepest sympathy for her loss. I married a wonderful man 21 years ago and his name is Thomas DeAngelis. Ironically, my name is Patty. I received a lovely letter in return along with beautiful angel memorial pins made on Thomas Deangelis' behalf. Every year on the anniversary of 9/11/01, I take out the pins and the letter from Patty to share with my husband and children who are now 19 and 16. It has been our way of remembering and having a small connection to one of the many heroes, we never knew but will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with entire family of Thomas P DeAngelis as we approach the the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Dad-
Just writing you name makes me cry, and its 2 years later. I miss you all the time. You were the one that I could talk to about nothing, or about something that I couldn't share with anyone else. I know that you are with us all the time, but it still hurts so much.
I miss you not being able to enjoy your grandchildren. I know you were able to enjoy the first 2 1/2 years of Dana's life, those years made you so proud. Dana still has memories of you (she definitely has you memory) -- she thinks that if she swings high enough on her swing she can bring you home (I only wish).
And the one you knew was coming but never got the chance to hold - our monster, Thomas, your namesake -- what a handful; everyday when he does something that I have to correct (which is often) I actually laugh because I know you watching thinking its hysterical- so I can't even get mad.
You were so easy going and never let anything bother you, you always saw the best in everyone. You taught by example, and thats the best way to learn. I try to live by your example as best I can.
I never knew how lucky I was until I lost you!
Being a parent myself I now know what joy their is in being a parent and hope I made you proud. You were an excellent role model!
You are in my thoughts and prays.

I love you Daddy!

To my friends Patty and Nicole,
It was my first apartment...the first time living on my own. I was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers and Spencers loud bark. I felt so comfortable and secure because I knew I had you all downstairs if I needed anything. To this day, I have never loved any place besides my parents home, as much as I loved that little apartment. There are so many little things that I remember about Tom. How he liked to sit out on your deck to smoke an occasional cigar in the summertime, or how he made it a point to shovel a walkway from my door to my car when it snowed. I miss you and Nicole very much and think about you more than you will ever know. I wonder about the young lady Nicole has grown into or if she remembers my ferret which I actually still have. I remember your Irish soda bread which you baked and always saved some for me, or the homemade pretzals that Nicole used to bring me when she made them. I can't say this enough...Thank you again for being the wonderful people you are. My love, thoughts and prayers will be with your family forever.
Hugs and kisses

It was the comfort of Silence,

knowing words were unnecessary.

It was the comfort of Silence,

knowing we would grow old

together

It was the comfort of Silence,

knowing there was you to care.

It was the comfort of Silence,

knowing explanations weren't

needed.

It was the comfort of our Home,

knowing Love would always be

there.

It was the comfort of you,

knowing you'd be my friend

forever.

You live on in my heart everyday.

I miss you so very much.

Memories live on... One day at work I noticed a mercy band my collegue was wearing. I immediately went to the web to purchase one myself. Living in Portland, Or I felt so distant from what happened so I really didn't know who to chose. However some of my favorite memories were living around the corner from a firestation. After school my friends would hang out at the station helping with duties like washing the trucks and folding the flags. So I decided that FDNY would be the most fitting. Randomly I was given the name "Thomas Deangelis." After reading more about him its seems so appropriate. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Thomas or his family I continue to feel connected to him simply by acknowledging his memory. My prayers are with you.

Dear Mrs.DeAngelis,I wanted to let you know that I now wear your husband's ID bracelet. It was given to me by a friend. She said, she would only give it to me if I promised to wear it, and I do. His name caught my eye and reading about him and you has now captured my heart. I hope that you are doing all right.I know the pain and sorrow are still there, I work in a funeral home and we buried many of his brothers. I had to deal with the families and their grief. Nothing touched me and my family like that day. We still feel the sorrow a year later.

It is by no means as great as yours, but I hope you draw strength from knowing there are people that care and think of you.

My name is Christine, just Chris is good though. I hope you get this message at a time when maybe you need to that some one cares. God Bless..Chris
