Antonio Alvarez Obituary

Learning on the Job

Antonio Alvarez and his wife, Filiberta Barragan, met more than five years ago at a garment factory in Queens. His job was to unpack and distribute the pieces of garments that came bundled together. Her job, after seamstresses had stitched them together, was to repackage them to send off to another factory.

The two were newly arrived immigrants from Mexico. They both believed in hard work and family closeness. "He was very serious, but always in a happy mood," Mrs. Barragan said.

They began living together, and four years ago had a son, Giovanni. They married a little more than a year ago. Mr. Alvarez, 23, liked to play soccer with friends or join in pickup basketball games in his neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens.

At one point, Mr. Alvarez was laid off from the garment factory, and he went to work for a restaurant. About a year ago, a friend helped him get the job as a grill cook at Windows on the World. He went to work at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, earlier than usual, because there was a special event.

"He was very happy working there," his wife said. "He said he was learning so much."

Dear Sir, We've never met but yesterday I chose to remember you and will ride in your honor in the 911 Ride to Remember here in Baltimore, Maryland. It is my honor and privilege to do so. I've read your biography and knowing that you were a hardworking family man like myself, had we met, we probably could have been friends. As I'm sure that you are loved and missed by your family and friends, know that today you are remembered by a complete stranger who rides with your name attached to his motorcycle jacket. Vaya Con Dios.

Yo estuve buscando sobre este hombre por la intriga de pensar de q su familia no este enterada de lo sucedido, tuve la dicha de encontrar un poco mas:

"Antonio Javier Alvarez. Antonio was killed in the attacks on September 11th. He was a grill cook at the Windows of the World resturant in the World Trade Center. He and his wife, Filiberta Barragan, met five years earlier at a garment factory in Queens.

I couldn’t find much more than a few paragraphs on Antonio. But, from what I could find, he was a man who believed family was the most important thing in his life, and he worked hard to make things better for them."

Ahora me he tomado la tarea de conseguir a su Familia dejarles saber cuanta gente ha tocado su historia de ser un simple cocinero hasta convertirse en un heroe...They most know, the will know.

Although we never knew you our daughter mourns the loss of this mans life. She was proud to have been able to see him as a hero on that tragic day 5 years ago. She is now 7 and feels a special bond to this gentleman, as we share the same last name. She feels that he will one day meet her at the gates of heaven and then they will be friends. Pretty profound for a little girl who carries a great deal of love for people she never knew who perished while she was still a little baby.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO EVERYONE WHO WAS LOST IN SUCH A TRAGIC EVENT...MAY YOU FIND PEACE IN YOUR LIFE...MAY ANTONIO'S FAMILY KNOW THAT EVEN IF I DID NOT KNOW HIM I FEEL LIKE ANY AMERICAN OUT THERE THAT HE NOW LIVES IN A MUCH BETTER PLACE...BE HAPPY FOR HIS LIFE THAT HE HAD HERE ON EARTH AND THE LIVES HE HAD TOUCHED WHILE HE WALKED THIS EARTH...BE SAD FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE OF FAULT FOR THE LOST OF HIM FOR THEY WILL HAVE TO SUFFER FOR ALL THE PAIN THEY HAVE CAST UPON OUR NATION AND ANTONIO'S FAMILY...

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Antonio. May you always feel the warmth of his love surround you. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
