Gerard Jean Baptiste: Treats for Dogs, and Himself
There is a decent chance that Gerard Jean Baptiste had dog biscuits in his pockets when he died. A New York firefighter, he routinely carried treats to give to the pets that walked past Ladder 9 in SoHo. That helped start conversations with the children — or the women — that the dogs towed with them.

The abundance of beautiful women was one reason Firefighter Baptiste loved New York, and especially his job site. "Being American, he thought New York was the most beautiful city in the world," said Delphine Leymarie, his girlfriend.

On his fifth birthday, March 11, 1971, he flew to the United States from his native Santo Domingo. As soon as the plane reached cruising altitude, "he said, 'Now we're in America,'" recalled his mother, Gladys Rodriguez.

Mr. Baptiste studied one thing after another to get ahead in life. He tried graphic arts and computers, he joined the New York National Guard, and he was working to became an officer in the Fire Department. After postings in the Bronx and Brooklyn, he finally seemed happy with the place where he worked.

And then there were the dog biscuits. "I always found crumbs in his pockets," Ms. Leymarie said.

Thank you for your service. As I pause today to think of your many friends and loved ones, it reminds me that we are all meant to take care of God's creatures, such as the dogs. We can learn a lot from a dog's personality. Be accepting, always loving. With love from Texas

I never knew you but I wish I had. I am currently stationed in Hawaii and am on the AF Ball committee we are making prayer cards as momentos and you were one of the names that I have to make a card for. I only know the basics about you I am sure you were a colorful person and must be missed terribly by your loved ones. I loved reading that you carried dog biscuits with you and your story about striving to make a good life in America. Thank you for your service in the military as well. This is proving to be a difficult project because I find myself tearing up getting to "know" each of you and your stories. It reminds me of why I serve. My aunt died with you that day, its comforting to know she is great company. wish your loved ones love, light, peace and aloha. Aubrey

Dear Gerard Jean Baptiste:
I think the definition of a hero is a person who puts someone else’s needs in front of their own. Someone who is nice and caring, a hero doesn’t even have to risk their life. A hero could be a blood donator, but you risked your life to save other Americans and for that America honors you.

Jean, you were always so nice and caring. I’m sure your girlfriend misses you badly. When you came to America you chose to serve it and everyone who lives there. I’m sure when you raced into the blazing inferno that was the twin towers you had crumbs in your pockets.

We will always remember the way you served our country. You were a great man and leader. You were a hero Gerard Jean Baptiste.
Sincerely,

Hello. I am a Engineer for Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority in Greeley, CO. On Sept. 11, 2008 I joined a group of 343 Firefighters to climb in the Denver Metro Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. We honored the memory of the FDNY Firefighters lost on Sept. 11, 2001 by climbing 110 flights in the Quest building in downtown Denver. The Qwest building is 55 stories tall, so the climb in done twice. The first 55 flights are done in full bunker gear and carrying a tool without being on air, and the second 55 flights are done on air.

Each firefighter was given a picture of a FDNY Firefighter who paid the ultimate price on 9-11 to be worn around our neck as we climbed the stairs. We were challenged by a Denver Chief to try to contact the family of the Firefighter whose picture we wore during the climb. This is my first effort to reach out to FF Gerard's family to let them know what is being done to remember the ultimate sacrifice which was given by the 343 Firefighters who answered the call on Sept. 11, 2001. I will not forget! God bless you all.

Gerard, my friend, my brother in arms. We went to Officer Candidate School together in Sea Girt, NJ back in 1996. I always considered you to be a friend. In this, the 5th anniversary of your passing, I am overcome with a sense of pride to have known you and what kind of person you were. You were always a true leader and patriot both on and off duty. I carried your name with me while I was in Iraq as a brutal reminder of why we will continue to fight to honor those who have fallen so that we may go on to protect the American way of life. You will always be remembered for the ultimate sacrifice that you have made for your country. May God continue to watch over you and those you have left behind.

When I think about the first anniversery, the only name I remembered hearing was yours. I was in complete shock, still am as are most of us. And now that all these recordings are being played, it's like living that night mare all over again. I can't even breathe right when I start to read anything or hear anything about that day. I as a young woman, being 24, have such a different outlook on life. Nothing is guaranteed. I commend you on your heroic efforts on 9/11. They were not in vain. Everyone who went into that building and never came out, has a very special place in my heart for all eternity. I may have never met you, but I would like to thank you for every effort made on your part, and the part of the entire NYFD, NYPD and etc. You will ALL be missed. We will never be the same. My deepest sympathies to your family.

It has been almost a year ago, when I was able to see the Baptisite family in Colorado Springs during the Fallen Firefighters Tribute.

You are such a strong family, my prayers are always with you.

I'm the firefighter from California, who keeps dog bisquits in my jacket since I heard how Gerard did it. It has helped my crew a couple of times with mean/scared dogs on incidents.

The firefighters from the Bowery FireHouse showed me Gerards bisquits when I first visited there in November 2001, the day after Gerard's service, which I attended there at Riverside.

That I attended Gerard's funeral, was more than ironic. A few weeks later Danny Rowan, Gerard Dolan, Sal, The 'Dude', Matt & Ralph from Gerard's firehouse on Great Jones Street, rolled into my firehouse in Cucamonga, CA on their bicycles.

I hit it off with Danny, and the next thing I knew I grabbed 4 other firemen and cops and drug them on a 40 day Trek from Long Beach, CA to NYC where we arrived last September 9th.

Gerard lives in my heart every day, and the dog bisquit tradition does as well. I will pass it on when I leave the fire service.

We also have named our firehouse the dawghouse in Gerards' honor.

God Bless all of the Baptiste family, Gerard is a saint. We feel the love from all the brothers' souls every day, and they inspire us to do as well as possible here on earth

I met gerard when I first started dating his brother, who is now my husband, about twenty years ago. He had an eye for women and nice clothes. He was always very quiet but when he smiled his face would light up a room. He loved all his nephews very much and though he was always very proper he became a kid when he was with them trying to please them with what ever they wanted. My fondest memories of you Gerard was when you played with my boys.

Gerard I know that a piece of you is still with us through the niece you never met. She was born exactly six months after the tragedy (on 03/11/02) and she shares your same birthday I know that there is some of you in her. I pray that your spirit has risen along with all those that tragically lost their lives as well on that day. Give us the courage and the wisdom to do right by you and give us peace. For a year later we are still struggling with your loss. September 11, 2001 changed my life, a nephew was born and brother in-law was lost. I will make sure that your niece and nephews will always know you loved them. May you rest in piece.....Miosotis

I was given Gerard's name at a prayer service last night for the victims of this horrible tragedy. I am praying for the loved ones he left behind. I am a very big dog lover and am happy he enjoyed the love of dogs in his short life. I have often prayed to Saint Gerard the patron saint of motherhood in the Catholic faith. I thought it was interesting I was given his name(a name I had often prayed to). My heartfelt condolences to the family he left behind. I pray your pain can become duller with time. I have also been wearing Gerard's name on my mercy band since last December. Today marks the 1st Anniversary since the end of his young life, and today was also the first day that I had the courage to look up his picture. Although I have been wearing his name and praying for him and his family since December 2001, I could not bring myself to put a face to the name. I think about him often, and I always wondered about his family. I wish I would have looked for him sooner, because what an extraordinary life he lived!!! His warm, kind eyes have made an everlasting impression on my heart and his face will never leave my mind. I am truly sorry for the unexplained loss of such an outstanding citizen, loving son, boyfriend, and friend. I know that Gerard made the ultimate sacrifice in giving his life so that others could live. Gerard, although I never "met" you, I somehow feel comfort in "knowing" you. I know you are at peace today away from the evil of the world. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES ALWAYS!

The sense of duty that characterized these brave men like my beloved son Gerard, who made the ultime sacrifice to save thousands , will endure throughout humanity and time as a great example of love, dedication ,valor c courage under fire. They are a special breed of men. They dont belong to America alone, they are universal, , they belong to the world.

Gerard was born in Santo domingo de Guzman on a clear morning day of March 11, 1966.

May God bless him as a great Human Being.

Gerard in addition of being a Firefighter, he was a First lieutenant in the 1-69 Infantry of the NYARNG. Serving the people was his calling in life, first as a lifeguard at a NYC public pool, then in the Army National Guard and then as a Firefighter.
He was happy as a soldier serving his country, he was also happy as a Firefighter serving his New York City he adored.

Gerard,

Just recently returned to my office across the street from the WTC. Every day when I look at the site I think of you.

I remember our times as platoon leaders together. I remember the time at the NTC when your platoon got cut off from the rest of the company and can remember so much better times. I remember you coming over the radio trying to describe your situation. "Sir, moral is low, can not continue mission!" I just laughed.

I think of times like that and laugh.

Got the command of Charlie for a while so my call sign has changed.

I have never met Gerard, but I think of him everyday. I, too, am wearing a mercy band bearing his name.

I sing in a chorale group, and in Nov. we gave a concert to benefit local charities. We invited two local firefighters to represent Sept 11. (One of them had actually spent several weeks at Ground Zero). They brought a display of all of the firefighters lost in the attack. That was the first time I had seen Gerard's photo.

We sang a beautiful song called "Sing Me to Heaven" dedicated to the victims, and then we sang a jazz arrangement of "America" for everyone working at the sites since the attack. Everyone at the concert was deeply moved, and the two local firefighters received a 10-minute standing ovation from the audience.

That concert was an incredibly moving experience for me...mainly because I felt I was singing for Gerard. I just wanted to let his family and friends know that he is constantly in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.

I was just looking through the names of those who lost their lives in 9/11 and was shocked to see Gerard here. Last time I saw him was at Fort Drum in NY on drill (He was a 2nd Lt. at the time). I remember him coming into our Guard unit 2/113 (Newark, NJ) he was there for I believe a little over a year before joining the NY Guard. He was very quite at first but after you got to know him he was truly a great guy (really outgoing and fun). I became pretty good friends with him. We always planned to get together for lunch in the city after I graduated law school and began work. We never did. I regret that now. I am so sorry to see his name here. He was truly a great person and will be missed.

I have been searching for information on Gerard since receiving a "Mercy" bracelet with his name on it as a Christmas gift.

Something always makes me sincerely heart courious about all the people lost is such a horrendous manner. He is especially close since I wear his name on my wrist daily. I think it is a natural couriousness. I am delighted to hear from others what a good caring giving person he was. I lost my 32 year old daughter 4 years ago. She died attempting to save her sisters life, so I do know a little of the sorrow of the family. To you I send so much and many heart filled wishes of compassion and sincere hope of a peace and understanding some day. It is horrendous what happened to the US as a whole on that day thatyou lost him, but to you it leaves a hole in your heart that aches and will never fill. One day that will ease some and you will be able to focus more on the good memories. Hold fast to those. If you believe in GOD, never let a day go by that you don't give your heart into His care and keeping. What your Gerard was about was being all that he could be in every way to his duty, family and city. Be proud and know that he will live forever in the minds and hearts of all those apprecitive for all that men like Gerard and all the others gave....the most they could give..for us and your city and you!

You remain in my prayers and thoughts as I will have a small connection to you through this bracelets. Hugs, Sandi

We thank Gerard with all our hearts for dedicating his life to help others as a firefighter and as a member of the National guard. Such a profession comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May Gerard's courage, life and love (and even his pocket full of dog biscuits) continue living in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times together. We are extremely sorry for our nation's loss of Gerard. Our hearts cry deeply with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I first met Baptise in Basic Training for the Army in 1992. We were both one of the older guys there so we had a lot more in common. I always remember Gerard was such an easygoing guy. After basic we went our separate ways, then around 1999 I transferred to NY National Guard 1/69th in Manhattan and was very surprised and happy to baptise. Now he was a lieutenant but that never changed him, he was still a great guy who was easy to talk to.
