Howard Kirschbaum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2001.
Second Round of a Career

Often when Barry Kirschbaum was alone on his back deck in Oakwood, in Staten Island, jazz would be playing, a glass of brandy would be on the table and a cigar would be in his hand. But he could often be found there with friends. "He was in touch with friends he had from 50 years ago," said his wife, Rochelle. "He was the one who always kept the crowd together."

One of the ways that Mr. Kirschbaum, 53, kept people together was by dining out about once a week. "He knew every restaurant and what to order and who to go with," said his daughter, Lauren, 23.

Mr. Kirschbaum was the director of security for Marsh & McLennan. He was responsible, with the 20 guards who worked for him, for the security of the firm's seven floors in 1 World Trade Center. When he took the job in 1997, he had recently retired from the New York Police Department, where he spent 25 years and achieved the rank of detective. He was looking for a second career to help him put Lauren and his son, Matthew, now 24, through college.

When the Kirschbaums dropped Lauren off at college for the first time, Mr. Kirschbaum expressed regret that his daughter was leaving home. "I can't believe I have to leave my little girl," he told her. "I'm going to get an apartment right next to you."

To all who love Barry,
I was sitting in Northern Israel on vacation watching Foxnews and saw your name as one of the heroes of 9/11. I am now back home in Los Angeles and for the reasons you will see in my name, took the loss very hard. My condolences to all who think of you.

Dear Kirschbaum Family:

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Although I did not know you or Barry, I share the same last name. I was born in Manhattan, NY at Beth Isreal Hospital in 1962. I grew up in CT. I saw Barry's name listed and it really made me want to write to you and to tell you that I share your pain as well as your last name. I know that my pain is nothing compared to yours, but seeing Barry's name listed made it all so much more real to me. I have a 4 year old daughter, and I shall always tell her all the truth that I know about "when the buildings fell down" and that many innocent people died, but hopefully they are in a better place. My prayers will always be with you and may God bless you all.

Barry,

I can't find words to express what I want to say to your family. I know you'd find that hard to believe but it's true.

I'm going to remember that usher at the King's, the guy having pizza on Rutland Road and the smart ass cop pulling me over when he got the car with the light on top as a joke.

I know we'll see each other again and have one hell of a reunion.

Barry, what can I say. I will never forget you, your humor, our great times and what a great and best friend you were to my father. I have seen your family since, we all got together like we used to, To eat of course, your favorite thing . Something was missing in the air. It was you. You weren't there in person but you were in spirit. You were like an uncle to me and I will never forget you. Wherever you are ,I am sure you are making everyone crack up, like you always used to. My dad is still in your families life. I know he still speaks to Rochelle , visits and she visits there. So don't worry, the people who you were great friends to are still there for you. Well stay sweet, and funny.

Barry, I know you are somewhere, practicing your Trivial Pursuit so that someday we will all meet again and get to have our re-match! We are all trying to remember the good times we had at the Seaview Pool, and at our yearly Thanksgiving dinners. Mom didn't want us to sign a public guest book, but I wanted to let you know we were here.

I have never met Barry but our beloved Andrew always spoke of him to me. For over the years Barry use to let Andrew have a day off or leave early so he could attend or spend time with our daughter. The Kirschbaum Family are in my prayers. A year has gone by and the pain is still there.

Dear Howard "Barry" Kirschbaum's family and friends,

Why did it have to happen? Howard didn't do anything, but the events of September eleventh took his life anyway, just like it took the lives of the other people who died that

terrible day. The amount of sorrow that I feel for you is greater than any sorrow that I have ever felt before.

My teacher got a phone call on September eleventh which upset her and right away I knew that something was wrong. She ran to the TV and turned on the news. All of the

children in my class sat in front of the TV crying as we watched the terrible events happen, until we thought it was over. But this tragic attack will always live in everyone's minds and hearts.

September eleventh was a terrible day. As a 10 year old I didn't really know what to think. I was very scared and confused. Since 8:46 that Tuesday morning I have prayed and felt so bad for the families that have lost loved ones.

The second my fourth grade class heard that there were Mercy

B.A.N.D.s with names of victims from September eleventh, we all wanted one.

Our class had been researching our two teacher's POW and MIA

bracelets from the Vietnam War. Those bracelets are similar

to the September eleventh bracelets and we found them very interesting.

My name is Taylor, I am 10 years old. My teacher's name is

Mrs. Ratzlaff. She was one of the five finalist for Nebraska's Teacher of the Year, so she had 1,000 dollars to spend for the classroom! We decided to use that money to

buy all 26 of us a Mercy B.A.N.D.

We received the bracelets about five weeks after ordering them and I have worn mine ever since, except when I go to gymnastics. I take showers, sleep and play with it on.

Engraved on my bracelet is: Howard "Barry" Kirschbaum WTC. I feel close to Howard because his name remains on my wrist and his family is in my thoughts and prayers everyday.

Howard Kirschbaum is now a part of my life. He and his family will always have a spot in my heart.

Praying for you,

Taylor

Barry,

Thank you for being part of my life. I share this message with all of his friends and family who have lost a wonderful friend and co-worker those from MARSH and those from NYPD, Brooklyn ,Rochelle,Matthew and Lauren who he loved so completly.

Listen closely to the winds and hear the gentle whisper of an angel's wings in flight.

Look far into the sky and see the shimmering stardust left behind.

Close your eyes, clear your thoughts and feel the love of your very own, very real, guardian angel.

You have touched so many of us with your friendship and love .

You are in a paradise we can only hope to understand.See you when I get there.Hugs and kisses J.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
