Allan Shwartzstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2001.
No Clothes Horse, He
After 15 years on Wall Street, Allan Shwartzstein still wore the watch he had received for his bar mitzvah. He preferred ratty denim shirts and hole-ridden khakis to the cuff links and starched collars more typical of Cantor Fitzgerald equities traders. That is what he wore on his second date with his wife, Amy, and still, she said, she married him. He promptly lost his wedding ring. "It just wasn't him," she said.

"He was somebody that, what you saw was what you got," she added. "This was not the guy that was going to hold the door open or worry about what came out of his mouth, or worry about what I looked like. He was genuine."

Mr. Shwartzstein was the kind of man for whom other people had a hard time buying presents, but who would always remember when it was time to buy them for others. "He would call and say: `Don't tell him I told you, but it's John's birthday. Call him,' " said Jay Scharf, a best friend.

Even as a child, he seemed older than his years. "When he came home, he did not go straight to the friends to play with them," said his father, Avi. "He would stand first with the parents and have a mature conversation.

Allan, 37 and the father of two, was named after an uncle who was killed in Israel in 1948. The uncle's body has never been found, Avi Shwartzstein said. Neither has Allan's.

A special friend and colleague. I have always been comforted that America has and will always appreciate Al's (and his family's) sacrifice.

I can only hope that smiles and warmth fill your heart now vs tears on this most terrible day of remembrance. Wishing your children the same.

Just passed the memorial bench in Chappaqua. Somebody placed flowers. I paused and thought about
Allan's contribution to the world and how lucky I am to be.

Dear Amy & family,
I never knew your husband Allan nor any of you. I was watching the CNN reports yesterday on the 10th Anniversary of this tragedy & Allan's name jumped out at me because I used to live in Chappaqua,N.Y. I wanted to send my condolences & prayers for peace & healing to you. It sounds as if you are doing very well with your books & companies which is wonderful! I just felt compelled to contact you & wish you continued success Amy with your beautiful family & life...I am sure that your husband Allen is watching over you all with a big grin. He seems like that was how he lived his life!! Blessings in so many ways to you, Joy

Today in the 4 services at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS, (www.villagepres.org) each worshipper was given a card with two names on it...victims of 9/11. During a special time of prayer and rememberance, we all prayed out loud, saying the names on our cards and praying for those who loved the person. I had Allan Shwartzstein. Know that I prayed for your loved one and those who love him at our 11:00 service, and will continue to. It's a special blessing to me to find this memorial page and learn about Allan and to now put names and faces with the name on the card. It's an honor for me. God Bless you all. We will never forget.

Allan's Influence

September 11, 2011

Not sure if anyone will read this ten years later. I knew Allan very well, for my whole life. Allan was a unique individual, and I wish I would have told him how much I admired him while I had the chance. I have served behind the scenes, and many times I have hoped Allan would be impressed. Allan's legacy lives on, and I hope my actions honor him.

My name is Jan Tucker. I worked at American General Life Insurance in Dallas TX. Yours was the first claim we paid from this tragedy. I took great pride in knowing we provided some financial support during this time. Every Sept. 11th, I re-read my list of 17 claims that I personally paid and my thoughts and prayers are with your family. I WILL NEVER FORGET.

Allan was the epitome of the word "mensch". I think of him often.

He was one of the nicest, most up-standing people I have known.

I will never forget the day that he asked me, if I would mind, if he went out with a former girlfriend of mine. I laughed so hard with Allan over that.

Miss you Shwarty!!

So it is possible to get such nasty news after so many years. I used to work as a dealer on foreign markets for a Dutch bank in the Netherlands and between 1997 and 2001 I talked to Larry Sarn and to Allan on a regular basis. (Beart st).

We (Henk, Henny and I) used to complain to Larry, when he came to visit/diner, about Allan not joining him om his tour through Europe. Larry would then tell us about Allan, how he was a great friend and good companion at work. And how he would never join Larry on his trips because he'd have to stay away from his family too long.

Allan, it was good to know you.

Even though it has been a while, I wish your family and friends all the best.

I had the great opportunity to work with the family as babysitter. Though it was just a couple of months, they turned into my model of family. I know Allan was an exceptional father and I have been asking God that Amy, my beloved and remembered Jessica and Matthew have got over this. You had an exceptional father and husband.

My best wishes and a hug from my heart.

I was with Allan at school in New Orleans. Even though I had not been in touch with Allan since our Tulane days, I was deeply saddened when I recently learned about what had happened.

I will always remember "Shwarty" (in his cut off sweatshirts) as a great guy with a great smile and sense of humor to match.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I bought a memorial bracelet with Mr. Shwartzstein's name on it. I searched for him on the internet and found his picture and story. Now, my bracelet is a person with a face and a story. And he sounds like my kinda guy!! My prayers are with his family and friends!

Unfortunately I didn't have the honour of meeting Allan, when i last visited the U.S. and met Melvin and Judy.

Distance is no barrier to the feeling of loss suffered. I only hope that Amy and the rest of the family can move through this time, knowing that they are loved even by family they have never met.

I didn't know I had a second cousin in New York named Allan until his name was listed in the obituaries months after September 11th.

The events of Septeber 11th were shocking -- then when I found out that I had a special connection, it was again deeply upsetting.

I'm sorry I never met you Allan. I hope someday me, my wife and our kids will have the opportunity to meet your wife and children -- a meeting of hope and consolation; of family.

We are old friends of Allan's in-laws, Mel and Judy. Although we never knew Allan, we wanted to express our sincerest condolences

to the entire family. Without knowing Allan personally, we are certain that he was a wonderful fellow, because he married into a most decent family.

Allan, may you rest in peace, and to your family, you'll always be in our prayers.

I never met Allan personally. I am the family pharmacist for Allan's parents, Avigdor and Ahuva, at Pathmark of Greenvale. The loss of Allan, along with so many others on Sept. 11th touched me and my family very deeply. When I saw his mother and father in the pharmacy in the days and weeks after the attack, I felt at a tremendous loss of words for what to say. . . what CAN one say? For a writer like myself, being speechless was a very uncomfortable feeling. I decided to give of my most precious resource in Allan's memory - Myself. I have joined the NY GUARD- the Reserve of the Army National Guard in NY. I believe that my uniform is a symbol of the defiance of America, an outraged democracy in a time of crisis. May my service be blessed, and a worthy tribute to the memory of Allan, and those who died with him. I am enclosing the symbol of the NY Guard, which I will wear proudly on my uniform.

We are very sorry for your loss of Allan. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
