Joshua Poptean Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2001.
Inspiring Hard Work
To pass "the Josh test" at Bronx Builders, a new employee had to be very good. Of all the project managers, Joshua Poptean was known as the most exacting, the man with the most indefatigable appetite for work.

He came across as defiant and argumentative, but new employees and clients alike quickly realized that his crustiness masked his fairness, loyalty and hearty sense of humor.

Mr. Poptean, 37, moved to Portland, Ore., from Romania with his family when he was a teenager, and he embraced his new country. He joined the National Guard; at a family reunion this Fourth of July, Mr. Poptean, an adored uncle, was the first to leap up and sing the national anthem. In New York City, he became deeply religious. He drove a taxi, learned carpentry and made his way to Bronx Builders, where he rose, eventually overseeing sites, including a bar for Windows on the World, on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center.

In the chaos of Sept. 11, Bronx Builders' supervisors around the city reported they were shutting down for the day. Finally, one supervisor, an immigrant himself and a protégé of Mr. Poptean's, called in from Brooklyn. His crew, he said emphatically, was continuing to work.

I will always remember you Joshua; every year of 9/11. Every time when we have the state fair in Sacramento, I go and look for your name on the 9/11 globe that is cared around USA. I will always think about you and I will never ever forget you. I am so honored to know you and you are one of my heroes!

My name is Sean Lane, I am a FireFighter in NY. This past weekend I participated in America's 911 ride from Shanksville PA to the Pentagon through to the WTC. Prior to last Thursday I did not know Joshua, the organizers made cards with the names of the people who perished on 9-11 and I was given Joshua's card. I wanted to let you know that i carried Joshua with me to the 3 sites right next to my heart. I thought alot about him although I never knew him, I thought alot about your family and my own. I responded with my Fire Company to Ground Zero that day and did coverage in the Bronx in the following weeks. I wanted you to know that we all will never forget and that Joshua will always be in the prayers of myself and my family.
God Bless Joshua and your family

You don't get over it, you just get through it. Your don't get by it, because you can't get around it. It doesn't 'get better'; it just gets different. Everyday... Grief puts on a new face.... I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.If the future seems overwhelming, remember that it comes one moment at a time.

It is my honor to be making a quilt square in memory of Joshua, for the United In Memory quilt. To be such a talented carpenter, it is the world's loss as well as his families. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Father we entrust our brother Joshua to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Joshua. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
