Lawrence Kim Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2001.
Appetites for Food and Life
Nov. 22 would have been Lawrence Kim's 32nd birthday.

His appetite for food mirrored his appetite for life. He loved doughnuts, wine, hot dogs from New York City vendors and his sister's pancakes. But his favorite was General Tso's chicken, which he would cook for his father.

He also had an appetite for knowledge. He drank in the world around him ‹ teaching himself German so he could read Freud in the original. He also owned several versions of Martin Heidegger's "Being and Time" and could quote from Goethe's "Faust."

But he embraced pop culture along with philosophy. One time, his co-workers opened the door to his office to find him blasting Celine Dion and singing along at the top of his lungs. He could recite the lines from the movie "Philadelphia" after watching it two dozen times.

He was a chronic workaholic. Security guards at Time Warner's Tampa offices were once alarmed because Mr. Kim's car had been parked in the same place for eight straight days while he had been continuously working on a project. That discipline carried over to his new job at Marsh & McLennan. Parking records show that he arrived between 7:30 and 8 a.m on Sept. 11, his second day of work.

This message is to Larry's family.

I am not sure if you remember me, but my name is Jeff Bamberg and Larry was living in my apartment when he started work at Marsh and McLennan. I wanted to reach out on this terrible anniversary to let you know how deeply Larry impacted my life. Larry and I worked together at Razorfish, and we grew close as colleagues and friends. Razorfish was my first job after leaving seven years of military service and Larry went out of his way to help me get acclimated with the city and with Razorfish. We met when I was looking for a short term roommate while my apartment was going through final construction. He immediately offered up his apartment when he learned of my predicament and refused to even consider taking remuneration; a true testament to his giving and caring nature.

Our friendship grew over our time together at Razorfish and I came to cherish his business acumen and commitment. His integrity and dedication were inspirational and I always knew if Larry said he would do something, it would be done. If more people shared his values, the world would surely be a better place.

Please accept my warmest thoughts on this terrible anniversary. Also, please accept my apologies for taking ten years to reach out. Know Larry has never been far from my thoughts and I am a better man for having known him.

Larry:

It seems like soo long ago that we last spoke and at the same time it seems like just yesterday that we laughed and shared soo many vivid experiences. I think about you often and always have "what if" thoughts.

One of my favorite memories is when we were both selected to interview with Time Warner down in Tampa. It was a blizzard when they called me asking me to interview down there. I said yes and two days later we were meeting up at the airport. It was a great few days you and I got to spend together. I still remember how hard you laughed when I arrived to breakfast the morning of the interview with a damp suit. I fell asleep while I steamed my suit in the bathroom. I spent the hours of 4am until I met you at 7:30AM drying my suit desperately for our interviews that day. The way you laughed at breakfast and reassured me that it would be just fine. We both got offers and you accepted. I often wondered what it would have been like to successfully implement that "mission impossible" assignment we were tasked with by the president.

More than that, I wish I could see you again, talk about what was going on in our lives.

I think of you often. You are not forgotten and you still live in our hearts and memories.

See you again someday,

-Jason

He was only a year or two older than I, but Larry was very much my first mentor. As students a year apart at CMU, we learned that Andrew Carnegie's personal motto was, "My heart is in the work." Larry exemplified this motto every single day as well or better than anyone I have ever known. I saw the impact he made at TCS when we worked there together. I am so happy to have known him and I often find myself approaching tasks myself, even today, thinking, "How would Larry Kim do this?" His inspiration and influence lives on through all the lives he touched along the way.

It has been so hard for me to write about Larry because we had been through a lot together. So instead, I take the liberty to put up some pictures of him and friends. There aren't many pictures of him, so I felt it important to share them to help everyone remember the good times that they had with him. The pictures can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FriendsOfLarryKim/

Larry made and impact everywhere he went. He had a quick wit and sense of humor. I remember asking him on a Friday about his weekend plans. He smiled at me and replied “Only two more work days until Monday”. I proceeded to kid him about wasting a good weekend. Thinking more about it, I realized that I had not been very observant.

For you see, what I might call work, Larry would call play. What I might call an obstacle, Larry would call an interesting challenge. He was joyful and passionate about what he did. There is a saying that if you have no passion then you have no life. Larry was full of passion and life.

In my heart I believe that he is now more alive then ever. Larry can now see the lives he touched and those he inspired.

You are fondly remembered.

I personally recruited Larry at Carnegie-Mellon for a Information Technology position at Time Customer Service. My experience with him during the interviewing process mirrors everything stated in the front page article of this guest book. He attacked the job search by becoming the most knowledgeable interviewee concerning our company and the job. It was the most exciting recruiting process I have ever been through with a potential employee. He challenged me like I had never been challenged before to convince him why he should take a position at TCS.

TCS was so fortunate to have Larry work for us. His accomplishments were outstanding. He was a wonderful friend to many including me. We stayed in touch and in fact,I talked to him only two weeks before 9/11.

His enthusiasm for everything he was involved in was inspiring to me and everyone around him.

To the Kim Family:

Larry and I worked together at Time Customer Service. During his time there we became very good friends. We had lunch together almost every day.

There was a group of us that used to get together after work once or twice a week (Larry, AVR, Matt, Steve, and Myself), to have a few beers at Ruby Tuesday's. It was situated right next to the Time building. We referred to it as "The First Floor Conference Room" or just FFCR.

After Larry left and went to New York, he used to call me periodically. Whenever he came back to Tampa, we would get together for dinner.

When AVR told me Larry was in the Trade Center, I felt like someone had hit me with a sledgehammer.

I have a copy of Michael Gelven's " A Commentary on Heidegger's Being and Time" that Larry gave me. I thumbed through the book before writing this. There are several passages that are underlined and a couple of handwritten notes. One of the passages that Larry underlined brings me to tears: "In short, our lives are meaningful not only because of what is, but also because of what might have been and what might be."

If any member of the Kim family would like to have this book, you can email me at [email protected] .

The thing about Larry I will never forget is his laugh. He was an extremely intelligent, funny, wonderful guy.

Larry was my friend and I will always miss him.

Dear Larry Kim's family,

I worked with Larry at Time Warner in Tampa, Florida where he was recruited out of college.

At Time Warner,I remember Larry as a very hard worker that I perceived as very inteligent with a bright future in computers.

However,I believe more importantly than Larry's hard work work and intelligence was his enthusiasm and zest for life. My fondest memory of Larry is how he would cheer up my day when we would go out to lunch together. To me, it is those small things that a person does: a cheerful smile, a warm heart, an enthusiastic attitude that makes another person's day a little happier. That's what Larry did for me and I will be evermore grateful for the short time that I had the privledge of knowing Larry.

In closing, I just joined peaceful tomorrows, which is a group consisting of victim's survivors who have dedicated thier lives to brininging justice to thier loved ones through peaceful means.

I will dedicate my involvement in peaceful tomorrows to larry's memory.

With Love,

Charlie Nichols

Hi Larry. Although I never had the opportunity to meet you, through meeting your family I came to realize what a special person you must have been here on earth. I believe in the soul and know that you are aware of what we are all thinking and feeling. I pray for your family, as I pray for my own. We lost our father on that same day working for Marsh as well. He too would have just celebrated his birthday. He was older, yes, he would have been 57. We both shared the same birthday, as I just turned 30. I guess I am sharing this to express that my father traveled on with other wonderful and unique people. I know that you orchestrated a gathering for your family the weekend of Labor Day, as did my father for mine. For these memories we will all be eternally grateful.

People are like stained-glass windows.

They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,

but when the darkness sets in,

their true beauty is revealed only if their light is from within.

We are very sorry for your loss of Lawrence. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
