Charles Houston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2001.
A Mush Around Children
Charles Joseph Houston was 6-foot-1, weighed 225 pounds and had a thick mustache. "He had a rough exterior, but inside, he was such a mush, especially around children." said Linda Houston, his wife.

He frolicked in his backyard pool with his 2- year-old nieces, read to his 9-year-old nephew, and in general "snuggled with them." He went for walks with them and took them to movies and malls. "He was like a second father," she said.

"But he was a pull-no-punches type of guy," she added. "What you see is what you get. He wouldn't sugarcoat on anything. If you asked him for an opinion, he'd tell you what he really thought, sometimes even things you didn't want to hear."

He and his brother-in-law, Otto Diodato, the father of his nieces and nephew, used to be efficient handymen in their two houses, merely a few yards apart. They'd be constantly concocting projects ‹ redoing the kitchen countertops, building fences, changing the bathroom tiles ‹ and actually finishing them. But shortly before the September attack, they had become more like "Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble," his wife said. "They would joke around, enjoy each other's company, and the projects would last forever." Mr. Houston, 42, worked at Euro Brokers. He and his wife were planning to adopt a child next summer.

I was with Charlie on Sept 10 2001 on the Command Bus#4 we were riding home. He was talking about watching the Giamts on Monday Night. What a good man.

I came upon your name by chance while looking for my husband's name (Joseph Houston). My husband died last summer of cancer. To your family I say God Bless, peace be with you all. You have truly been through so much.

Dear Mrs. Houston:

Here it is the second anniversary of the terrorist assault that killed more than 3,000 people. The voices of the children marked the profound grief of it all. We remember the lives lost. We remember the heroic deeds. We remember the compassion, the decency of our fellow citizens on that terrible day. We pray for your husband and all the husbands, wives, moms and dads and the sons and daughters and loved ones...we pray for strength and we honor and pray for your lost. We miss you at MQH and you'll always be in our hearts. Here's hoping you find the inner strength and courage to live your life in a way which Mr. Houston would have wanted. God Bless you...!! Your former students at MQH --Eli 13 yrs. old and Andrew 12 yrs. old.

To Linda and the rest of Charlie's family - I am a friend and former co-worker of Charlie's brother-in-law, T. O'Brien, and I am so so sorry for your great loss. I just want you to know that I am one of many strangers to you who hear your story and grieve for all of you. You should know that it does not matter how much time passes since 9/11, and it has been more than one year, I will never ever forget the devastation. Because of the loss suffered by 'my people', my life is changed forever too and I continue to ache for you. I just thought that you might find a bit of comfort in knowing that someone read about Charlie and wanted to reach out to you because she really cares.

I hope you are surrounded by loving family and friends.

I was one of Charlie's clients and a friend.....He was the first person I thought of that morning when the first plane hit...I called to see if he was okay around 8:55am....We talked about the crash....He told me he thought it was a small aircraft and that he couldn't believe they hit the building on such a clear day...That was the last I ever heard from Charlie...

When my first baby was born with some health problems, Charlie was the first to send prays our way and a thoughtful gift....

When my wife had a serious problem with her second delivery in June 2001, Charlie was there for me again...

Charlie was a great salesman and an even better human being.

Godspeed

Dear Mrs. Houston,

As I mentioned in the card, no words can express how truly sorry we were to hear about your husband. Christopher hoped the picture he sent cheered you up in the sense that we all now have an extra guardian angel looking out for us. Please know that you're in our thoughts and prayers always.

We are very sorry for your loss of Charles. I giggled at the story of Fred and Barney. So Charles is still reaching out and touching lives in a positive way. May Charles's life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I saw Charlie on the Command # 4 bus every morning for years. He never spoke much, very quite and dignified in his bright yellow windbreaker. My prayers go out to his family.

Such a tragic loss.
