Vincent Brunton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2001.
A Picture of Inspiration
Cathy Brunton had always known that her husband, Vincent, the captain of Truck Company Ladder 105, loved being a firefighter. He joined the department 22 years ago, the same year they got married, the same year their daughter Kelly was born.

But it was not until she received a four- page letter from a young firefighter she did not recall having met that Mrs. Brunton came to appreciate the kind of firefighter her husband had been, the lessons he was always prepared to teach and the depth of respect others had for him.

"I could go into his office at 11:30 p.m. and ask him a fire question and he would lean back in his chair and tell me countless stories," the letter from the firefighter, Will Hickey, said. "He would say the best way to learn is from your mistakes. 'If you're not making mistakes, you are not trying.' "

Even a false alarm provided an opportunity to learn. Mr. Hickey described how terrified he once had been at a fire with Captain Brunton. Flames were shooting out the windows and the roof. "I was thinking to myself, 'This guy is absolutely crazy! What is he thinking, he's John Wayne or something?' " But Captain Brunton, 43, took his arm and showed him what to do.

"I have put a small picture of him on the underside of my helmet," Mr. Hickey said. "Sometimes I just touch it to remind me to stay calm, to keep it simple and to 'think on my feet.'"

Remembering Vincent on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

September 11, 2020

I grew up in Windsor Terrace and went to Holy Name grammar school. There were no coed classes so I was never in a class with any of the Bruntons. Anyway, I wasn’t a friend of with Vinny’s, but everybody pretty much who everybody was and when 9/11/01 happened and I saw that he was one of the firefighters lost I felt a sort of loss in my childhood. The streets were full of pockets of kids then, but we all had Holy Name in common. I remember his wife, Cathy, before she was his wife. We weren’t in the same group of friends, but she started going out with Albert, who was in my group,
and then I heard she was going out with Vinny. I don’t know if my memory is serving me correctly, but I believe they were kids when they started dating. Anyway, I found this page and its 9/11/20, so I wanted to post this memory...such a long time ago, so much fun in those days. I’m glad to hear They were married all that time.

My best wishes to the family of Capt. Vincent Brunton. There have been long years and lonely days for them. We will never forget, you know that. We are all New Yorkers, since 9-11. My father, Emil Brunton, and Vincent evidently had many traits in common, and Dad would have been proud to have known him. I will be thinking of you tomorrow, not only because we are distant cousins, but because Vincent embodies the best of us all. Lynda Brunton Ausmus

Dear Mrs Brunton

I am watching live transmission of the Remembrance Service from the Memorial Plaza and all of our TV channels in the UK are covering this and the other services at the Pentagon and Shanksville.

There are also services in London attended by Prince Charles and the Prime Minister David Cameron to remember those who were lost ten years ago.

Some time ago I discovered a family connection with Vincent through the Dolan/Cunningham/Lochiel line. Since that time I have thought of Vincent and his family often especially at this time of year.

I hope that the fact that you are held in the thoughts and prayers of people like me who you don't know will give you come comfort. Kindest Regards.

Mrs. Brunton, Kelly & Tommy,

I was Kelly's good friend growing up (556 16th), and we moved when I was 10. My uncle is still with FDNY and I heard about Mr. Brunton's passing on 9/11 through him.

Each year I think of your family on this somber day; of all the men & women lost that day but specifically Mr. Brunton. Being the same age as Kelly, I can imagine how hard it must be to go through your 20s without a father, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I have lived in Florida for the past six years but I never forgot about your families. My prayers and condolences go out to you all. Dear Captain Brunton,
I have never met you nor have I ever seen you in person but it didn’t take that for me to know that you a true hero. You did not have to do what you did and neither did any of the other heroic people who gave their lives to help other people during one of one of our country’s biggest tragedies. September 11 was a sad day for almost every American and lots of people lost their lives that day and did not deserve it. You are one of those people.
I cannot express with words or this letter how thankful I am for the service you have provided for places as big as our country or as small as a small town. I know people all over are thankful for your 22 years of service on the force. You risked your life as a captain, dad, husband, friend and hero to do your best and help our country and I respect you for that.
I have found that people from various resources say that you are kind, caring and rarely had and unkind word for anyone. I know that the people such as your wife, Cathy and your children deeply feel your loss and think of you every day. I am sure that your family’s lives, your friend’s lives and ladder 105 will never be the same without you. I know that people think of you in a great way every day. I myself am one of those people.
Once again I thank you for your service.

Sincerely,
Ellie Myers

Dear Cathy & Family,
I have recently been researching the Brunton family tree and found James Brunton (Vincent's great, great grandfather) who was my great-great grandfather's older brother. I was thrilled to find a new branch of my family but my heart sank when I discovered that Vincent was among the brave men and women who perished on that terrible day. My neice worked in the World Trade Center and it was only by chance that she was not there that day. I have often thanked God for that and I continue to pray for the families of those who were not so fortunate. I have read a great deal about Vincent and he sounds like an amazing man, I wish I could have known him. Though miles and generations seperate our two families there are many similarities. In my father's family of 12 children, there are six firefighters and the facial resemblance is uncanny. I will proudly add Vincent to my family history and I will continue to pray for you and your children. God Bless You.

I never knew my cousin Vincent as well as i could and should have. From what my father told me, he was one of the funniest, hardest working men that he ever met.

To this day I have two very clear memories of Vinny.

The first happened when I was around eight or nine. We were coming back from dinner at my mother's family's house on 73rd St. in Bay Ridge. We drove back to our house on 68th. As my father started to park our car, really close to our house, this small car kept creeping closer and closer to us.

My father got more and more frustrated with the driver. A few choice words may or may not have come out of his mouth. Finally when my dad got the car parked, the other car parked too.

My dad got out, thinking he was going to give the other driver a few more choice words. The other driver got out too.

My mother, sisters and I were in the car, expecting the worst. All of a sudden, Dad started hugging the other driver.

Turns out it was Vinny. He was playing a little joke on my dad. He had come to Bay Ridge (which was miles from Windsor Terrace to this small boy) to visit my grandmother who lived next door to us. She had been having a tough time, but he wasn't too busy between at least two jobs to make sure she was alright.

The second memory was on that dreadful day five years ago. I was working for an insurance company here in atlanta. I was watching tv and listening to the radio, horrified. When my father picked me up from work he was balling like a little baby. He told me that Vinny was among the firefighters missing. Then he really broke down and said that his brother Michael told him that he was going back down to where the Towers were and he wasn't leaving til he brought his brother home.

Vincent, you are my hero. I hope that when I have a son, he is as selfless as you were.

Cathy and the Brunton Family,

I always tell the story of working w/Vinnie in the A&S Parking garage during the summer and the laughs we shared and the jokes we played many years ago.He was training up and down the stairs of the parking lot to get in shape for the Fireman's test and I always knew he'd be the first one in and the quickest to get to someone in need. That same speed and determination got him into God's hand quicker than we wanted but he died doing what he loved and wanted to do. His love of his family and community, the smile and laughter, his legacy and memory will always live on. I am proud to have known him and been touched by his presence and spirit. His humor and persona have touched too many people to count and he has been a blessing to us all. I wish you and your family the best in life and love.

God Bless and Peace

Dear Vinnie,

It is incredibly difficult to accept that a year has passed since you were taken from us. We have tried our best to move forward and to make sure Cathy and the kids are okay. But what is okay? All we know is that our lives will never be the same. Our world is a dimmer place without you in it. You are so purely loved by your friends and family. There is a unmistakable saddness in all of our eyes when we see each other and we're not sure that will ever go away. We miss you so much; your smile, your solidness, your spark. This week the Farrells Football Trip heads to Dallas. We know they will make their way with heavy hearts and with you very much in mind. We also know they will make the best of it because you will inspire them to do just that. We think you are probably happy to know that we are planning to be married in March 2003. We know you have always been a big fan of our reunion and that the spirit of Vince will be alive and well in the park that day. We love you and not a day has passed that you have not been in our thoughts and prayers. Please give a hug to our Dads and scout out a good place to nosh for when we meet again. There is no doubt that you continue to inspire only now it's divine inspiration. Rest well and thank you for being a great friend.

I still remember one winter’s day long ago when 16th street was not plowed from the prior days 15 inch snow storm, and looking out from the window of my parents house seeing Vinnie rocking his red jeep back and forth trying to free it from its from its parking spot. Going out to see if I could help, Vinnie says to me, “I gotta get to work, give me a push.” So, with the help of Pierre from the corner deli, we finally get the jeep moving and Vinnie on his way. It’s this small moment in time that reminds me of one thing: Dedication.

Park Slope Brooklyn -- a home where

we grew up, played, worked hard and

learned to love ... a New York neighborhood where we learned to

have heart and care for each other,

learned to keep your chin up and

never give up ... where we learned

to respect each other...We laughed,

we cried, we found joy, we sang,

we danced..

We learned that New York City was

a small town after all...

And now, we learn how hard our

hearts can be broken. Too many of our young and brave taken from us too soon. Too many tears to be shed, too many hearts torn.

Vinny Brunton, You touched us all

so very much... Now may you rest

in heaven with our Lord.

New York City has Lost so many of our beautiful and brave..Vinny was

one of our heroes, and we miss him.

Our hearts grieve with his family and our prayers go out to them.

We will always Remember Vinny..

We will never forget 9/11

We are deeply sorry for our nation's loss of Vincent. We thank him with our hearts for all he has done for others as a firefighter. Such a dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May Vincent's courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May the sorrow you feel today be lightened by warm memories of the yesterdays shared with Vincent. It really touched my heart to hear Mr. Hickey has a picture of Vincent in his helmet to help keep him calm. May you all feel Vincent's presence guide you. Our hearts cry with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I met Vinnie 15 years ago when I lived in Park Slope and when I saw his name on the missing list my heart sank. He was such a kind and loving person, always so happy and full of life. My heart goes out to you and your family and to the Firefighters who have lost such a dear friend, and to all the Firefighters families who have lost a loved one.

I never had a chance to meet any of the heroes who wore the turnout gear or the heroes who became angels on September 11, 2001, but I know you are safely in God's hands now. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as they are with all the victims who senselessly perished on that most tragic day in our lives. I am so sorry for your loss.
