Michael Carroll Obituary
Over at the Ladder 3 firehouse, none of the coffee cups have handles. It's one of the many legacies of Michael Carroll, 39, who spent 16 years there. The other firefighters are not sure why he started snapping off the handles, but just like his other habits, it could not be stopped. He also cut a hole in the wall between the ladder company's dormitory and a room reserved for the aide who drives the local battalion chief around. Late at night, if the ladder company answered an alarm and the aide stayed in bed, Firefighter Carroll would reach through the hole, open a dresser drawer and slam it, just to let the aide know they had returned.
"He was an incredible teacher for the younger firemen," said Pat Murphy, whose idea of torture was speaking to school groups touring the firehouse — until Firefighter Carroll helped him.
Michael Carroll drove the truck to the fires, coached his son, Brendan, in baseball and doted on his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Olivia. He was "great, great and great," said his friend Gerard Brenkert.
During the blizzard of 1996, he was heading uptown from New York Hospital after his father had surgery there.
"On every other corner, there was a poor soul looking for a cab," said Nancy Amigron, his sister. One by one, Firefighter Carroll picked up the snow-covered New Yorkers and drove them home. "We were so relieved about my father that we would have driven anybody to California," said Mrs. Amigron, who is planning to send some new coffee cups — without handles — to Ladder 3.

Michael keeps showing up on the West Coast. Very odd situations. A Friend of mine (here on the West Coast) was fast forwarding a video of people reading off names of the victims at this year's 17th anniversary @ Ground Zero. It was a 33 minute long video. He randomly stopped the video just when Michael's name was being read and his name plate appeared on the screen. And, again, on the same day, another Friend of mine (on the West coast) was watching the 9pm news and spotted Michael's name plate on the news -- she took a snap shot of it and I've attached the pic. I found a feather too this week. I believe when I find a feather (and I find ALOT of feathers) it's Michael's way of letting me know he's watching over me and my Husband Timmy Kane (Michael's 1st counsin). ~Michael; I think about you a lot and introduce you to people all of the time; miss you & love you. To the family of Michael T. Carroll. I purchased a flag from a traveling 9/11 memorial exhibition. Each flag has a yellow ribbon with the name, age, city, and location on 9/11. I fly his flag every 9/11; and numerous times during the year! He was flying on the 11th!!! God Bless!!!

The great games of H-O-R-S-E will never leave my consciousness. Oh, how I knew I'd better master your favorite move: the Pete Maravich behind the back off-the-dribble flip, catch with the same hand, reverse lay-up. I still can't spin it on my index finger like you could. As the center on your team, I got an early bird's-eye view of the right way to play the point.
On the baseball diamond, my center-field position provided the ultimate vantage point for your text-book play at short. The glove stayed down on all grounders and no throw was ever rushed.
I was heartened to learn from your FDNY brothers that your propensity for a little mischief was intact at the end. It made the 25 years between '76 and '01 seem
irrelevant to the forging of your personality. I only recently learned that you were lost on that fateful day. My younger brother instantly recognized your photo on a 9/11 site. He was only 9 the last time we saw you; you were 14. When he called me with the news, I scoured the web for info. Upon finding the Sports Illustrated piece, my pervading thought was that A.E. Housman foretold your story with "To an Athlete Dying Young."

To Michael Carroll's Family, I recently discovered the online Sports Illustrated article about Mike. I was most interested to read about his accomplishments as a firefighter, athlete, and family man. The article mentions an Irish blessing printed on the cards distributed at his funeral. I have a framed copy of the same blessing on display in my living room. I have the greatest love and respect for firefighters and police officers because they not only risk their lives every day, they are also Good Samaritans when off duty. They are always looking to help someone in need--holding food drives, toy drives, pancake breakfasts (to raise money for scholarships and athletic equipment/uniforms), to name just a few of their charitable efforts. My heartfelt thanks for sharing your grief, your memories--and for giving me this opportunity to say, "I care." Please think of this entry as a hug from me.
