Neil Cudmore Obituary

Forming Roots

As a boy, Neil J. Cudmore discovered a hobby that became his lifelong passion. At 8 or 9, he regularly disappeared for hours to the river by his childhood home near Essex, England, to fish. As he grew into an outgoing man, his fishing became an oddly solitary activity for someone who thrived in the company of others.

But it gave Mr. Cudmore, 39, a sales director with the Risk Waters Group, a way to balance an active social life with a gentle sensitivity that helped his friends through their sorrows and joys — whether making daily calls to a friend going through a painful breakup or giving a first-time father emotional support.

"It was not just that he made a lot of friends, but that he retained them," said Mr. Cudmore's father, James Cudmore. He recalled that at a gathering of his son's friends at a pub near a home he had in Dorset, England, friends from almost every phase of his life and from three continents gathered to share memories of him.

On one of those continents — in Hong Kong, to be exact — Neil Cudmore met Dinah Webster, an advertising manager at Risk Waters, who became his fiancée. They bought a house in Port Washington, N.Y., in July 2001 and planned to adopt a child. According to their friend William Rhode, they were putting down roots and finally settling down. "Neil was applying what he wanted for his life to his life," Mr. Rhode said. "He and Dinah really knew how to live passionately, especially in their love for each other."

Ms. Webster and Mr. Cudmore were at a Risk Waters meeting at Windows on the World on Sept. 11.

Worked with Neil at Patey Doyle in the late 80's and he gave me my first break at Angel Publishing in 1989. Always patient and supportive. Without his help I would not be where I am today. God Bless you.

Today is September 11th, 2011. I participated in the singing of Mozart's Requiem this afternoon at the Manhasset Congregational Church. It was a very moving experience in memory of those in the area who had lost their lives on 9/11. We were each given a name ( on a badge ) to wear. Mine read Neil James Cudmore. I did not know him, but I prayed for him and his family during the concert. As a mother of three and grandmother of eight, I can't imagine anything worse than losing a son or a daughter. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you; it was an honor to wear your son's badge.

We knew Cuddy as a young man during our years living in an Essex Village. Echoing David Honeyman's words, he was liked by all. Sadly missed, never forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family. God Bless.

As I cross-stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

I knew Cuddy for a couple of years, around 85-7. I was even his boss for a short period. Great bloke. I don't know of anyone who didn't like him, or who ever said a bad word about him. I remember when he broke his jaw and our pub landlady used to strain the minestrone soup for him, to drink through a straw. Introduced us to Viz magazine

Until now I did not know a (distant) relative lost his life in this tragedy.

All I can do is repeat the words of St Augustine:

God is so good that He would not permit evil to occur unless a greater good came from it.

Let us pray not only for those who died on Sept. 11 but for all those millions around the world who die because of wars and terrorism.

As a fellow Brit, I was honored to place a flag in remembrance of you today, the first anniversary of 9/11. A ceremony to place 3,041 flags on the Cathedral lawn at the University of Pittsburgh remembered those who had lost their lives. You will long be remembered by many.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
