Michael Diehl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2001.
Barbecue in the Snow
Michael D. Diehl was a grill master. He grilled chicken, hamburgers, spareribs and turkeys year-round. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow could stop him.

"He would park himself in a lawn chair in front of the barbecue with a glass of wine, preparing mouth-watering foods for his family and friends," said his wife, Loisanne. "Even in the winter he would don a parka, shovel a path to the grill and sit there like he was on top of the world."

Mr. Diehl, 48, used grilling to escape the hurly-burly of Wall Street. Some days he would sit on the sprawling deck of his house in Brick, N.J., taking in the air, not saying a word to anyone, or enjoying light conversation with Mrs. Diehl. He worked at Fiduciary Trust for 19 years. He was a vice president for custody in his last position.

The couple had two children, Jason, 20, and Jeannette, 15. He pushed them to do their best and they tried. Jeannette plays 10 instruments, including the piano, flute and piccolo, while Jason plays 5, including guitar, Mrs. Diehl said.

"He would beam from ear to ear as he listened to Jeannette perform at her piano recitals," Mrs. Diehl said, "or watch Jason make a great save in the goalie net."

Michael Diehl, 48, the king of grilling

The two-story contemporary at the end of a dead-end street in Brick was Michael and Lois Diehl's dream house. But it was the backyard deck where Mr. Diehl was king.

Every Sunday, he could be found parked in a lawn chair with a glass of red wine, surveying the smoking grill. If it snowed, he would dig a path.

"One year he even made our Thanksgiving turkey on the grill," Lois Diehl said. "He couldn't cook in the kitchen, but he was a master chef on the grill."

Mr. Diehl, 48, a vice president with Fiduciary Trust International, was in his office on the 90th floor of Tower Two when the second hijacked jetliner slammed into it.

A devoted father to his two children, Jason, 20, and Jeannette, 15, he also visited his mother, Kathleen, frequently in nearby Toms River after his father died in 1983.

"Michael would go over and cut hedges and hang Christmas lights, and he never complained," said his brother, Robert, of Newark, Del. "He called Mom from work everyday just to see how she was doing."

Quiet and conservative, he initially seemed an odd fit for the brash and outgoing Lois Diehl.

"Opposites attract," his wife said, "but we have always been best friends."

The couple met at U.S. Trust Co. in Manhattan, where they had both gone to work as teenagers. One night, she decided to go watch the company bowling team play, and since they both lived in Jersey City, Mr. Diehl asked if she needed a ride home.

"He's been taking me home ever since," Lois Diehl said.

Although Mr. Diehl worked full time, he attended night school at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, for eight years until he earned a business degree.

The couple worked hard but enjoying the little things. They liked to travel and always took an annual vacation to the Caribbean.

They had a tradition of taping the soap opera "The Young and the Restless." For 20 years, after the children were in bed, they would sit down at 10:30 p.m. and watch it, sharing a drink or pretzels to wind down.

They were animal lovers, with a menagerie that included Captain Morgan the parrot, fish and beloved cats, Maxwell and Petey. Maxwell, who died earlier this year, had his framed picture in the den, and Petey met Mr. Diehl at the door every evening after work.

Also surviving are two brothers, Richard of Tampa, and Kenneth of Barnegat.

Hello to family. I purchased a 9-11 bracelet of 9-11 victims and have Michael's name on it! I wore it for many years. Yesterday I found it when cleaning out a jewelry box. If anyone in the family would like it, I would love to send it to you. That is the least I can do.

Hello, My name is Jody Andrus. I am from western NY and recently took some students to NYC. We visted the WTC site and the tribute gift shop where I purchased a bracelet to wear in honor of one of the members of 911 who lost their lives. I am proud to wear "Micheal D. Diehl". He sounds like a wonderful man and I know he is greatly missed by all of you. Please know I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers and may his presence always be felt close to your heart and deep in your soul.
Sincerely yours

To Jeanette Diehl,

You probably don't remember me but my parents lived next door to you. You were just a kid then when I was there.

I don't think the events of 9/11 touched people who didn't live in the tri state area like it did with people who did. No matter who I talk to in New Jersey, they knew of someone who was either there, had friends who lost their lives, or family who lost their lives.

My sympathies go out to you and your family. I remember your dad as being a nice guy and your family was a welcomed change to the neighborhood.

Michael D Diehl came up on my 9/11 Memorial Facebook Application. It dedicates my status to his memory. I looked Michael Diehl up and found out he was a loving friend to his wife, a supportive father to 2 children, a dedicated worker and a great grill chef. My status was about remembering those of 9/11. Though I never knew Michael I am remembering him and his family today.

I went to Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City, NJ, with Michael. Although I did not know Michael very well I remember him as a kind and good individual who certainly did not deserve this fate. My heart cries every time I hear of the 9/11 events and Michael comes to mind. I feel for his family, and hope that time has healed the wounds, but know that Michael will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend.

To The Diehl Family
I came accross the Diehl name while searching for a friend on the list. I am a stranger to you all but share the last name Diehl(my maiden name) While watching a documentary on 9/11 I decided to go online and browse around. I scrolled down the list my heart aching with every name I saw. And there it was... Diehl. Instantly I stopped - my heart ached for this man I didn't know, it ached for his family who I don't know. I ached for all. The Diehl name in South Africa is minute - less than 10 in the whole country! I lost my brother in 1981 so from my side there is no one to carry on the name. I often browse for the surname just curiosity I guess. And what I read here today kind of makes me sad that I don't know more Diehl's. He sounded fun and like him we too like to barbeque (we have the right weather here for it) So I guess, thats all I wanted to say. May God bless you all. Mr Diehl - may you RIP.

On behalf of my family I would like to thank everyone that has signed my father's guestbook. I know he would not want us to cry and dwell on such a sad time. My father has always put everyone else before him and that's what he was known for.He gave me the courage to be strong at that rough time and I couldn't ask for more. I know he loved everyone and in these e-mails, letters, and signed guest books I get I know everyone gave him the same. Thank you and god bless

RIP Michael D. Diehl 9-11-01...I love you Daddy!

I can't begin to understand what this past year has been for your family. I never met Michael and yet everyday I take him with me. You see I had heard of "mercy bands", an organization that sends you a bracelet with the name of someone who had passed on that tragic day. I didn't know who's name I'd get, and it was his. So for the past year I've wondered who this man was, how old he was, if he was married ,children... Today I learned about him by reading his "legacy". Please know that your husband/father/ friend is now part of my family as well. Daily as I travel I take him with me, and in my prayers. This special man to you will never be forgotten by us either. My husband - Michael- is also quite the chef on the grill and now when I watch my Michael outside regardless of weather in front of the grill it will be one more moment I think of your family. I waited today to hear his name announced, again I'm so sorry for your loss. Our prayers are with you each and every day. May you find comfort in knowing that all of you will be watched over by him, and a complete stranger will never forget that his precious life ended too soon.

As I expressed to Mike's family last year by letter, he is still sorely missed and will not be forgotten. He was always a delight to speak with, extremely professional, helpful and just a down-to-earth nice person.

I think of him often when contacting his employer for business purposes and will always remember him.

September 11, 2002

My niece pointed out the name "Michael Diehl" among those killed in the attacks of Sept. 11. I didn't know him personally, nor are we related (except, perhaps, distantly), but as we share the name, I feel some kinship.

Late in 2001 I poked around on the 'net for information about Mr. Diehl and found an article in a local (New Jersey) paper mentioning his love of his family, and of barbequing. Like Mr. Diehl, I'm blessed to have a wonderful family (one son and one daughter, like the Diehls). And I too love to grill; living in California, I have fewer obstacles than Mr. Diehl did to indulging my passion year-round.

To his family and friends I express my sincere and heartfelt sorrow for your loss.

I had the priviledge of working with Mike for four years prior to 1996. He was the first one I thought of as soon when the planes hit. I was so sad for his family. He had an extraordinary sense of humor; a serious professional attitude; and a strong love for his family. I remember how we compared notes about colleges that our kids were considering. I think of Mike frequently as do other former coworkers I have spoken to about him. His gentle manner and his kindness were always something I could count on to cheer me up when things were rough. Although I have not seen Mike for several years and our last phone contact was at least three years ago, I miss him very much. We all lost a wonderful person who made the world a better place.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Michael. May his life and love (including bar-b-quing in the snow) live on in those who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Michael. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
