John Ueltzhoeffer Obituary

A Super Bowl Family
Super Bowl Sunday was a family holiday for the Ueltzhoeffers. After all, John Ueltzhoeffer's first date with his wife, Uschi, was a Super Bowl XXIV party at his parents' house in 1990. More important, the first of the couple's three children, Sarah, was born on Super Bowl Sunday in 1994. "I'm in labor and John and the doctor are discussing the Super Bowl," Uschi Ueltzhoeffer recalled.

Sarah came into the world at 5 a.m. "We would always tell Sarah that she came a week late, that she waited for the Super Bowl," Ms. Ueltzhoeffer said. The couple watched the Super Bowl from the hospital.

Uschi was wide awake after giving birth, but John kept falling asleep on the couch after the all-nighter. Sarah was followed by Jacob, 4, and Rebekah, 3 ‹ neither of them born on Super Bowl Sunday.

Every year, the Ueltzhoeffers have a Super Bowl party at their house ‹ sometimes it coincides with Sarah's birthday party and they celebrate with cake. Uschi Ueltzhoeffer, who is from Austria, has developed a better understanding of football and the Super Bowl since her first date with the man who would become her husband. "We'll keep watching it," she said. "Just for the kids, we'll keep some traditions to remember."

John Ueltzhoffer, 36, lived his faith That John Ueltzhoffer met his future wife at a loud dance club does not really say much about the kind of guy John Ueltzhoffer was.

"It was one of those real noisy places," Ueltzhoffer's widow, Uschi, recalled fondly. "Neither one of us liked it that much, so we went outside and talked."

And they kept talking, and 18 months later, the couple were married. They celebrated their 10th anniversary in July, along with their three children -- Sarah, 7, Jacob, 4, and 3-year-old Rebekah -- at their home in Roselle Park.

A churchgoing Jersey guy, Mr. Ueltzhoffer, 36, was never much of a partygoer, his wife said, and the testimonies about his life after he was killed on Sept. 11, when the first hijacked plane struck Tower One of the World Trade Center, show the truth of that reckoning.

Mr. Ueltzhoffer worked for Marsh & McLennan on the 95th floor of the North Tower.

"He was really outgoing, he had real leadership potential," said Pastor Bill Rimondi of Christ Fellowship Church in Elizabeth, a charismatic, evangelical congregation where the Ueltzhoffers worshipped.

Rimondi said Mr. Ueltzhoffer taught classes on evangelism, talked about his faith to everyone he met, and even made missionary trips to the Dominican Republic. "It was very important in his life," he said.

And in the life of his family, which has found their Christian faith to be a great comfort, said Uschi Ueltzhoffer. "He just wanted to serve God," she said.

He also loved his family, and being around kids. Mr. Ueltzhoffer's love of model planes -- especially motorized remote control ones -- made him popular in the neighborhood. Vacations for Mr. Ueltzhofer meant time with family, and time with his children.

"In August we went to the Shore for a week, to Cape May," his wife said. "Every morning he would take one of the kids to the bagel store, just to spend time with them individually. They would take turns going with him."

As a software technician for Marsh & McLennan, an insurance corporation that was hit hard by the trade center catastrophe, Mr. Ueltzhoffer was computer savvy, and also spent a lot of time with his children on the home computer.

"I wish now I had learned more," his wife said. "The kids know everything about computers. I don't."

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Ueltzhoffer at the Dwyer House at Elizabeth High School, where Christ Fellowship holds its regular services, at 4 p.m. Oct. 28. Mrs. Uletzhoffer asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the congregation.

My name is David Lewis. I grew-up across the street from John, and he was one of four true friends I've had in my life. The Lord blessed me in that, I was able to meet Johns wife and children before the Lord called him home. I'll see you soon enough Brother, when I go home.

My husband and I ordered a MercyBand to wear in memory of a victim of the 9/11 tragedy. Our band arrived today and the band bears the name of John G. Ueltzhoeffer. We would like to let you know that we will wear it everyday and pray for John and his family. We feel honored to wear this band. We read John's biography on the MercyBand website and was very impressed with his faith and devotion to his family. I am sure his family misses him very much and feels grateful to have had him in their lives. We are grateful to you for allowing us to share in his memory with you. We live in a small town in middle Georgia but everyone here feels the loss of the victims of 9/11 very strongly. God bless you and your family !

A day doesn't pass without the memory of September 11, and each time I do remember, John comes to my mind. I, along with so many others, have cried for his family's loss. I remember John as a young teenager, and as the years moved on, I watched as he matured into a beautiful Christian man. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who loved Jesus with all his heart. His life and his family were a demonstration of that love.

My sister shared with me a beautiful moment relating to whom John was. Her granddaughter, Ashley, who is John's niece, was visiting John, Uschi, and her cousins. During the night Ashley awoke and went in to the kitchen. There she saw John, alone in the dark, and in the quiet of the night, on his knees praying to the Lord. What a beautiful memory of her Uncle John. The Lord blessed Ashley with a gift that night; a gift that will remain in her heart forever. John will be remembered by all of us in this lifetime, but through the Lord, Jesus Christ, we will meet again. I know up in heaven that great smile of his is permanent.

Dear John,

I know you hear me up in heaven, I miss you so much, I can't believe you are gone. I wish we were together more the past few years. Everyday I think about you, and i cry this is so hard. I think about Uschi and the kids and how much I know they miss you and it breaks my heart you are not there to see your children grow up. They are so sweet and precious. And Uschi is a strong person and is wonderful to the children and mom.Thank God for her. I will always be here for them if they need me, I also need them to be here for me. I miss you and love you. God Bless you Love always your sister Helen

Dear Uschi,

I went to John's Memorial Service with my daughter. In that brief time I learned how John was blessed by our Lord. I came across this poem and it reminded me of John.

O,please let me be like a candle, dear Lord,

Quietly shedding a light;Perhaps in a limited sphere.

Unsung, but making the pathway bright for someone who happens to come my way,

Needing a bit of cheer--then letting them go with a heart that's light to quiet another's fear.

O, let me be like a candle, dear Lord, for all of my earthly stay, Just giving myself that somebody lost may see You and find the Way!

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

I am very sad that nothing but the Superbowl made it into the NYtimes. Seems nothing else was interesting enough....like he was home every day at 5pm to be with his children. He loved to laugh!
He was devoted to God and his family!
He never said no when somebody needed help, be it money or time.
He loved his family, he loved his job, he was a content person....
never asking for anything.
The Superbowl was fun, but it does not say anything about who John was.....a loving husband.
I miss you so much, John.
Love always, Uschi.

Everytime I watch the Super Bowl after reading your story I will think of your family. We are very sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
