Edgar Emery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2001.
A Runner for All Seasons
Cold and snow were never enough to keep Edgar H. Emery Jr. from going running. "He'd come back with icicles in his hair," said his wife, Elizabeth.

Mr. Emery, who worked at Fiduciary Trust, organized co-workers to run in charity races, recalled Kevin Granville, a longtime friend and colleague.

"He pulled me into these 5-K runs," Mr. Granville said — and often Mr. Emery would take off, leaving Mr. Granville behind. "Only the last couple of races we ran, I guess Ed didn't have anything to prove," he said. "He'd stay back with me, make sure I was doing O.K., not having a heart attack."

Mr. Emery would run after work, so that he and his wife somehow frequently ended up eating late, candlelit dinners. It was a routine he stuck to even while studying for several months for the test to be a certified financial planner, which he passed a few months ago. "He never even got a chance to see the certificate," Mrs. Emery said.

I will always remember (Butch) Ed because I grew up as a neighbor across the street from where we lived as kids on Edison avenue in Sunbury, Pa. The memory of 911 does leave deep scars on our hearts, but we can be assured someday soon, very soon, Jesus will return and wipe away all tears from our eyes. Condolences to the immediate family.

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Edgar or (Butch) as we use to call him growing up was like a brother I never had. His sister Dona and I were best friends and lived across the street from each other. I spent many hours at his house all through our school days. I am lucky to have known him. However, I am sorry I never got to know him as the man he turned out to be. We all went our own ways after school and I think I only saw him one more time after that at a class reunion. Through his sister, she has kept me up to date with the family. Brian I met you a few times, though you may not remember. I am sure your dad would be very proud of the man you have become. I think often of all the fun and fights we use to have growing up and will treasure them always. Butch will forever be in my heart and my thoughts.
Love always,
A long time friend.

I worked with Ed in the HR Department at Fiduciary Trust. Ed was the first person to welcome me to the company and I will always remember him for that. Ed was kind, smart, funny, and a true gentleman. I remember debating politics with Ed and often talking about the Larry King show. I remember him always eating chocolate before 9:30am in the morning! I remember hanging out in Ed's office and just chatting away.

Ed - I truly miss you and I thank you for saving so many peoples' lives that day. I feel blessed and honored to have known you and to have been your friend and colleague.

Love, Allison

My father and Ed's father were brothers, making Ed my first cousin. I am much younger than my brother and sisters who new Ed, so I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I attended a memorial service in Sunbury after the attacks. I was honored to know that I was related to such a wonderful person, but sad that I never had the chance to truly know him. My prayers continue to be with his immediate family and friends.

Dear Liz,Brian and family,

I just wanted to express to you all about how fortunate I was to have known Ed both on a business and personal level.I met Ed in 1987 during a business situation-he would not give me the time of day at first- but one day he gave me a chance and we eventually became really good friends. He also helped me develop my career, since he had incredible patience and a terrific feel for people.I remember he always organized the Corporate Challenge 5k runs in downtown NYC,pulling so many people together. We rode the 5 Boro bike tour together in 1990-we lived on powerbars that day!!His office at Fiduciary Trust was on the 95 floor;I would never go up being afraid of the elevators in the WTC;so he would meet me in the plaza. When he met Liz,he called me excitedly that day because he knew he had met the love of his life!I loved meeting Ed and Liz for drinks in Hoboken,us all sneaking cigs every once in a while! When Ed proposed to Liz,he showed me the engraved watch she had given him with "yes"inscribed with the date of acceptance. He was so happy with his woman, their house,so proud of his son going to college, and was a success in all the right areas.A fine, fine person, who was one of the best friends I had ever had.I have so many memories that span over the years since 1987.I just regret having to cancel seeing him and Liz last summer.Since then,I have moved back from Florida to NYC and live in HOBO now.I take the ferry nightly, view the incomplete skyline where the towers once stood, and pray every evening for Ed and Liz,Brian, family and friends.Liz,please feel free to drop me an email;I would love to see you and give you a hug.

Peace and Love,Helene

Edgar H Emery, Jr is a HERO in my mind for the selfless efforts he put forth on 9-11-01 in helping evalucate his fellow co-workers from FTC. If it weren't for Ed's guidance and selflessness on 9-11, many of his co-workers wouldnt be

alive right now.

I will always remember Ed's way of dealing with life's little bumps....with a smile on his face and a positive outlook.

We will miss you forever Ed, but we will NEVER FORGET you!!!

Father we entrust our brother Edgar to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Liz,

My prayers are ever with you. Ed was a wonderful, sweet man. I regret that I only knew him from work and that I did not have the pleasure of knowing him more closely. For close to a year and a half we communicated almost daily via phone or email and his sunny personality always came through.

Please know that he touched many people and will never truly be gone as long as so many people hold him in their hearts.

May peace follow you wherever you decide to go...

I went to school with Ed's brother Rick and we always bought our xmas trees from Rick. When I told my son (Army Spec. Forces) about Ed he said mom tell Rick if you see him I am going and we will get the person responsible. It has really hit home knowing that Rick has lost a brother and I nearly lost my sister in law who also is a supervisor in the WTC and then knowing the danger my son faced and I pray to God no one ever has to face this fear again. I pray for you and your family Liz that you find the peace you so desperately need at this time. The city of Sunbury PA feels your pain, I feel your pain. May God Bless you always and show you his peace. Laura

Yesterday I received my Mercy Band with Mr. Emery's name on it. Before I ordered it, I prayed for God's will in sending me the "right" person's name for me to pray for daily. I am touched that I received Mr. Emery's. You see, my husband was suppose to go to a meeting at the WTC and stay at the Marriott WTC Sept. 10-14. Because I had an Emmaus Christian Retreat that weekend and our son's birthday is on the 12th, he decided to reschedule for 2 weeks later. Needless to say, the meeting was permantly cancelled. I thank God that my husband and father to our children remains with us. I get goosebumps when I think of all who lost their lives. I am so sorry for the loss of Edgar, but please know that I intend to pray for the family and loved ones of him daily. May God bless his soul. In Christ-Shari

It was my first time in New York - wide-eyed and amazed that the city was as great as I had always dreamed. As part of the training team from California, I came to New York to work with Ed and his staff to rollout a new system. I had no idea that the lunch I spent with Ed on Friday, September 7th would be the last time I would get to see him.

What a great day! Ed shared with me his thoughts about New York City, our department, our future success, and his love for his family. I will always remember that day. Ed was truly a wonderful man. It was my pleasure to have met him and spent but a few moments with him. Thank you Ed.

Liz,

Our hearts go out to you. We keep you and Ed in our prayers. May you find some strenght in knowing there are many who are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers daily. We will never forget.

May Edgar's enthusiasm for running, his life and love live on in those who love him. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Edgar. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
