Joseph Lostrangio Obituary

Adventures in Food

Joseph Lostrangio had few peers when it came to caring for saltwater fish — he kept four tanks at home, one a 90-gallon monster. And not many people could match the zeal with which Mr. Lostrangio played Billy Joel songs on his six-string guitar.

But nobody in the suburbs, absolutely nobody, his friends say, could touch Mr. Lostrangio when he got into his kitchen.

To call Mr. Lostrangio, 48, a gourmet chef was an understatement. For him, cooking was more than an adventure, it was a crusade. And his holy grail was preparing the weirdest, most exotic meals that his family and friends ever tasted. "Joe was a life explorer," said his wife, Theresann. "I don't know where he would get these things."

Once he came home with a package of rattlesnake meat. Another time it was buffalo steaks. To find such ingredients, Mr. Lostrangio often asked the staff in New York restaurants.

Mr. Lostrangio lived in Langhorne, Pa., but he felt at home in New York. He was born and raised on Long Island and got his law degree from the New York Law School in Chinatown. For years his reinsurance consulting business took him to the city.

In early September of last year, Mr. Lostrangio accepted an offer to work for Devonshire Group. That put him in the World Trade Center, in the middle of all the major insurance companies he worked with. And only a few blocks from so many Chinatown restaurants just waiting to be explored.

Thinking of my brother as another anniversary approaches. Still grieving the loss of years together, we lost the opportunity to grow older together. Wish you were still here, miss having my big brother but holding the memory of your quick mind, your ready smile and laugh and your tender heart for family. Holding you in my heart, Joe.

Only recently did I find out through the Bishop Reilly High School Class of 71 Facebook group that I knew someone in that tragedy. Joe and I were in several classes, and for a short time on the Debate Club team. I remember Joe for his zest for life and his humor, both good and poor.

Joe could get us to smile and he cared for people around him. Even when others would dump on my being a geek, Joe would try to change their focus, he respected people.

I have my own special connection to 9-11. That morning I attended Mass in Colorado Springs with Joe Boardman who was the Commissioner of Transportation for the State of New York. As Joe and I left St. Mary's Church about 7am Mountain Time, he commented to me that his pager kept going off during the service, and he was wondering why. Until we walled into the lobby of the Antlers where dozens were watching a big screen TV, as the second plane hit the Towers. Joe turned toward me, white as a sheet, and simply said, "Now I know why my pager was going off!" Boardman and his two top Deputies then took off driving non-stop back to New York to take charge of the Transportation implications.

Now I have another connection......

Dear Joe, on this 9/11, in the pandemic, we continue to miss you, we will never forget. Time has passed in so many different way. He would have met this pandemic challenge the way did all challenges-joke about, have a glass of wine, check the many salt water tanks in our home and together we would meet the challenges. Love T

Joe, I worked with you for some years in Philadelphia. I'll never forget your humor, your kindness (the time you drove me from Philly to Brooklyn and insisted in staying at the station till the subway arrived. We lost touch after that - I moved to New England - and I only learned some years after the towers fell that you had lost your life that day. I am so sorry for all your family and all you friends and coworkers. But we'll meet again, I know.

I knew Joe back when we both worked for IRISC in Jamesburg, NJ. He was the best boss I ever had. So easy going. Every time he went to Australia he always brought back chocolate or some silly little thing. He was so proud of his family. He talked about them alot. He always walked around the office smiling. The world lost a great guy.

Joe, that bottle of Bermuda hot rum sauce that you brought back from a business trip is still sitting in my kitchen. I use it only on special occasions, because a special coworker gave it to me. Believe it or not, that stuff is still HOT !! I will always remember you.....

I had the pleasure of working with Joe when he was at an AIG office in Marlton NJ back in the 80's. We spoke at great length about saltwater fish and just about everything I know about them came from Joe. I miss you pal.

Joe's office was directly across from mine on the 79th floor of WTC. He only moved in a few weeks before that day but seemed like a really nice guy. I wish I had more time to know him. God bless him.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
