Carlos Segarra Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 20, 2001.
A Final Act of Kindness
hree years ago, after Carlos Segarra's only son decided to marry, Mr. Segarra and his wife, Antonia, decided to sell their home of 24 years in Brooklyn and get a bigger one so their son, his new wife and even the wife's mother could move in. "We had never been separated," said Antonia Segarra, who had been married to him for 31 years. "We were always such a united family."

For most of Sept, 11, Mrs. Segarra waited in front of the two-family house in Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for her husband to come home.

Mr. Segarra, 54, a supervisor at Wachovia/First Union on the 46th floor of 2 World Trade Center, had called his son, Juan Carlos, and told him he was on his way out of the building. The family later found out he had been delayed helping an asthmatic colleague and that the two had made it down to the lobby before the building collapsed. "His final actions sum it all up," Juan Carlos Segarra, a 28-year-old accountant in Manhattan, said. "He was very kind."

Mr. Segarra loved the romantic ballads of Latin trios and spent many weekends taping Spanish-language radio shows that featured classics by groups like Trio Los Panchos from Mexico. He left his wife with dozens of the recorded cassettes, but she said she had yet to listen to a single one.

"I can't play them," she said.

I only knew one man from that tragedy.
Apart from being family, he was a great man.
When I judge him, I think of the pain
of the other three thousand families
who suffered the same.
But in this particular case,
the world lost a righteous man.

Carlos was my co worker, mi panita in Manny Hanny/Chemical Bank/Chase @ 4NY Plaza in the late 1990's. We shared a great love for our beautiful island, Puerto Rico. He made a trip to the island and brought me a souvenir that, to this date, hangs proudly in my home with the profile picture in this site that I got from the Daily News after victims names were announced. At the time, we also shared the same last name, but there was no relation with my ex husband. He always had a kind word and a big smile. When I found out he lost his life in 911 my heart broke. I pray every day for his family which I never had the honor of meeting. Dios los bendga y les siga dando fortaleza. Happy anniversary in heaven, Carlos. RIP. Extraño nuestras platicas amigo.

Another year and you are still thought of with friendship and respect. You were a good man Carlos, a good mentor and a good friend. You are thought of whenever I hear or see anything 9-11 related, or reflect on my time at Chase. God Bless you my friend, and God Bless the Segarra Family. You are all in my prayers today.

To the Segarra family, I am sorry for your loss. I meet Carlos while working in the Network Computer Room in the 4B basement of 1 Chase Plaza some years ago. I remember Carlos as a kind, soft spoken trusted professional team leader in his department. May peace and blessings be upon him forever.

My thoughts and prayers are with Carlos and his family. I know I don't have to tell you he was a good man, as you already know. Just know that his goodness touched so many others and he is remembered for the good that he did in life. God Bless you all, God Bless Carlos, and God Bless America.

Mr. Segarra was my great uncle, we were super close and when he died I was only in the 2nd grade and I could not handle the fact that he was gone. We spent every weekend together doing anything and everything and then one day all that changed and since then it's never been the same . It would have been to sad to go to the funeral so I stood put while others went to mourn in Puerto Rico. I am 14 now and still can't bare to witness his deathbed. Maybe when I am older I will finally get the courage to go and visit him but for now, it still hurts to think about the day. I've written poems in school about him and reading them aloud, I cried in front of my whole class only to be comforted. God Bless Tio Carlos . R.i.P

Still relive that day 5 years later. I remember going into the contingency site at Metrotech and seeing your picture in the Daily News. It felt like a punch in the gut. It was my honor to work with you. A gentleman to the end. Always looking out for others. God bless you and your family. May we never forget the sacrifice of so many brave individuals who perished that day helping others. The ordinary Heroes of 9-11.

Most of my contact with Carlos, was over the telephone when we both worked for Chase Manhattan Bank. I gave Carlos's department a lot of work when he was in the Fed area of the Bank. He was always helpful and never got an attitude as some others sometimes did. I actually got to meet him twice in person before he left Chase. I just came across this website the other day and even though 3 years has passed I want to extend my deepest condolences to his family. He was truly a kind and good person who deserved a long, long life.

Carlos,

Not a day goes by that I don't think of that horrible day, Seprember 11, 2001. As a result, not a day goes by that I don't think of, and remember you.

Still working at JP Morgan Chase, I am sometimes asked for a contact in the Fed Funds Department. It always leads me to say, we used to have a great guy over there who was so helpful, he was also a good friend to all of us. Not to say that those there now are not helpful, but without a doubt, you were the best. You worked hard to provide fast and accurate responses. If you couldn't find the answer right away, you called to say you were still looking. You made us feel like our inquiries mattered to you, and you made our jobs easier.

Your memory lives on in me. I don't think any of us will forget September 11th, and even more sadly, as a result of those tragic events, I don't think any of us who knew you will ever forget you.

Be at peace my friend.

I believe we never loose people we have met, we carry them around in our minds. We see them in small gestures and in their children - the same smile on a different face, or a favorite joke told with a different voice. My tribute to Carlos will be to try to emulate his patience and strength of character.

If I succeed, some day, someone will benefit from Carlos with out having had the privilege of knowing him. And maybe they too will emulate him and thus he will stay with us even after he is gone.

Carlos,

It's funny how I still look up when the train enters the DeKalb Avenue Station. I know you are not going to be there, but I guess in some way I still hope that September 11, 2001 was all just a nightmare.

I appreciate your friendship over the years. I miss the daily conversations on the train. I only wish that I took more time. I also wish I could have found you a job within JP Morgan Chase when you sent me your resume. I tried. There was just nothing there.

Chase was not the same after you left. Now the world will never be the same since you left it. A great, loving, caring, and giving person has been lost to this world.

Be at peace my friend.

After meeting Carlos when I began my career at Chase Manhattan in the early 1990's, Carlos was always the type of person that would take the time to not only spread his knowledge, but the pleasures that life and his family gave him. He was full of wisdom and I am certain he will always be remembered by all that knew him as a geniune gentleman. May God Bless him and his family as we remember one year ago today.

I WORKED WITH CARLOS @JPM/CHASE. HE WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON. HE WOULD ALWAYS HELP YOU OUT. EVEN IF HE COULDN'T HELP AT THE TIME YOU CALLED. "HE WOULD ALWAYS SAY CAN I GET BACK TO YOU"? AND HE WOULD! THE LAST TIME I SAW CARLOS WE BOTH WERE WALKING THROUGH THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. I WAS ON MY WAY TO THE PATH TRAIN AND WAS RUNNING LATE. WHEN I SAW CARLOS WE EXCHANGED GREETINGS. I TOLD HIM I HAD TO RUN AND I WOULD CALL HIM THE NEXT WEEK. I WISH I WOULD HAVE STAYED AND TALK WITH HIM FOR HOURS. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT I WOULD NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN. I MISS HIM DEARLY. WHENEVER WE STOP TO REMEMBER CARLOS IT WAS HIS WARM CARING AND CONSIDER WAYS. CARLOS WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBER BY HIS COWORKERS @JPM. WE ARE ALL HAPPY THAT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW HIM. MAY MY THOUGHTS OF CARLOS IN SOME WAY COMFORT YOU. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. DOTTY ROBINSON

To The Segarra Family,

I have wanted to write to you for so long now but never knew how to express what I wanted to say. I felt a great sense of loss when I heard that Carlos was among the missing on September 11th.

Carlos was a great mentor, a great friend, and colleague. I worked with Carlos both directly and indirectly for over 17 years. I came in to Chase in 1984 as an 18 year old know nothing, and was assigned to the DTC Department. Carlos was the supervisor of the DTC Reconciliation Department at the time, and was one of the first to take me under his wing and show me everything he could to help me to do well. Carlos was a great teacher. He was extremely patient, and always willing to put things aside to show someone how to do something. Even if it meant that he would have to stay late to catch up. I think I've only seen him express frustration once in the 17 years I've known him and even that was mild mannered.

I would see Carlos almost daily for a while on the R train at DeKalb Ave. We would talk about houses, home repair, and family. Carlos always spoke with such pride about his son and his accomplishments. As he spoke, his face lit up and his eyes would sparkle.

There is so much more that I could say about Carlos. He will be truly missed and always remembered. Without his guidance, his patience, and his coaxing, I don't honestly feel that I would have succeeded half as well at Chase.

My perfect thought of Carlos right now is that he is in Heaven, and if I know him, he's probably teaching the new angels how to put on their wings and fly.

Good-bye my friend. Be at peace.

I met Carlos several years ago when Chemical and Chase Banks merged. He was a very kind and gentle person. He was helpful and I learned a lot from him. The last time I saw him here in Dallas, while he was down for training earlier this year, his parting words to me was "take care of yourself" and that I would see him whenever I was in New York. He was very proud of his family and although you may miss him, be thankful for all the time that you have been able to spend with him. I will miss his quiet demeanor and his shy smile. He was a blessing to every life that he has touched. I pray that his soul is in heaven. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

To the Segarra family,

Heroes come in many forms...

Carlos was a hero well before the tragic events of Sept. 11th.

In a world that is often filled with hate and darkness, he only saw Love and beauty.

He was a shy man, whose actions spoke loudly, always leading, not so much with words but more importantly by example.

It is rare in life when someone truley believes they were touched by an angel...

My friendship with Carlos has taught me to believe.

Goodbye my friend...

To the family and friends of Carlos: How thankful you must be to have had a father, husband, and friend as special as Carlos. He visited Dallas for only a short while, but left an impression of care and concern for our success here and our well-being. So, we in Dallas share the same concern for your success and well-being as you live through this ordeal. May God Bless You.

To The Segarra Family,

I met Carlos ten years ago at Chase.

He was the nicest, kindest person you could ever meet. He was always willing to help anybody, with work or personel problems. What I remember most about Carlos was how much he loved the holidays, especially being home with his famiy. When September 11 happened I thought of Carlos first, but I thought he was ok, but when I called his house, his wife told me that he called and said he was evacuating, but trying to help someone he never made it down. He died because of the goodness of his heart, and that is what I will always remember him by. To his family be strong, he will always be with you and the rest of us. May he rest in peace.

Love,

To The Segarra Family:

Realizing what a year it has been and knowing this Holiday season will be like no other.

For the world has forever been changed in the aftermath of Sept. 11. But for me my life was changed the minute I met a gentle frayed old man by the name of Carlos Segarra. We grew to be very good friends and spent a lot of time together in Dallas.

He was a very kind and gentle individual always had a warm smile and hand shake for anyone he met. If you had a problem and needed advice he was there, those moments in conversation with my buddy I will always treasure. I miss him and I didn’t realize what I had till it was gone. He is in a better place doing greater things, because he was great.

To his family I want to thank you for allowing Carlos to grace me with his presence not only in New York but in Dallas. I am forever changed by it. May God always be with you. To my buddy “Peace be with you” and I know you will be with me for a long long time!

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I first met Carlos 3 1/2 years ago. I transferred to the Fed Processing Area. Carlos ran the Fed Receive Area and I the Deliver Area. Needless to say when I first transferred there I knew nothing about Fed Settlements. Carlos took me under his wing and pretty much taught me everything that I now know about the Fed. For this I am eternally grateful as he had a lot to do with my development and subsequent relocation and promotion in Dallas.

Carlos was one of the most righteous and caring individuals that I have known and he will always be remembered by his friends and collegues. He was always telling us how proud he was of his son and his wife. He especially enjoyed eating his wife's cooking at his desk.

Carlos has left an impression on my life that will be with me forever. He will be remembered in my prayers.

I first met Carlos when he and Mercedes came down to train us in Dallas. He was sitting across the table with the nicest, kindest smile. I remember thinking, "he looks a lot like younger pictures of my grandfather." From the side parted hair and the glasses to the mole on the side of his cheek. He had such a wealth of knowledge that to this day, I am in Awe of. I know it tore at his heart to "let go" of the Fed department being in New York. It showed everytime one of us had a blank look on our faces. He would just keep going over it until we understood. He made sure that we knew everything possible to be able to do our jobs to the best of our ability. He would have stayed with us until 10pm if he thought it would help us. Any items he needed to take care of would be his least concern, but our welfare and knowledge were his highest priority. I feel that he truly felt that our training was a reflection on him.

Every morning when we would come in, he made sure to say "Hello" and ask about the family and how our evening was. And his concern was real. When he was in Texas, we were his "Dallas Family". The sorrow that I know we all felt was immeasurable when we heard of the attacks. But I know in my heart he was just doing what he loved doing, taking care of other people.
