Lee S. Fehling

Lee Fehling Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2001.
Born to Laugh
It did not take Lee S. Fehling's mother long to know that she had a character on her hands. "You know when the doctor slaps you on the back and the baby cries?" said his mother, Joan Bischoff. "Lee came out laughing."

Mr. Fehling, 28, relished a good telephone prank, calling his mother, an insurance investigator, and claiming to be an investigation subject, or impersonating a Nassau County official to inform a friend that her garage violated zoning restrictions.

"He wasn't ever a fan of dull moments," said his younger brother, Thomas.

This was particularly problematic for those who played bagpipes with Mr. Fehling in the American Legion band in Wantagh, on Long Island, where he lived. (Just try playing the pipes while cracking up.)

Mr. Fehling, a firefighter with Engine Company 235 in Brooklyn, could always make his wife, Danielle, smile, but he could never fool her. "I could tell a mile away if he was up to something," she said.

He adored his daughter Kaitlin, 4. But his stepsister-in-law Jennifer Bischoff thinks she knows the real reason he was pleased that the second little Fehling would also be a girl. (Megan was born Oct. 18.)

"He was afraid a little boy would be just like him," she said, chuckling. "And he wouldn't be able to handle it."

Lee this is long overdue but I did not know that this was available. I hope you are hanging out with the other righteous firefighters in a peaceful and serene environment.

May his soul rest in peace. Wonderful young man. I still remember him coming into my insurance office. Many blessings to his wonderful family as well.

On 09/11/16, the Fire Department in Aspen, Colorado held a very dignified and moving memorial. They had one rose for each fallen firefighter, and everyone in attendance was invited to take a rose. I am a retired first responder (deputy sheriff), and the red rose that I received has attached to it a tag with the name Lee Fehling, and his photo. Of course, I never knew Lee, but I am saving this rose and sending thoughts and prayers to his family. My heart goes out to you. We will never forget.

Another day goes by and yet it doesn't get an easier for me. I sit here and still cannot believe you are not with us. I carry your picture with me every day still and my kids often ask who you are. I tell them a true hero and friend. Today is my sons 11th birthday and he knows that its your day as well. Until we meet again my friend. You really left a huge footprint here for us to remember!

I recently had the honor to run in the Hero Rush in Ocala, FL in honor of Lee S. Fehling, and all the other Fallen Firefighters. We had a moment of silence, and then said aloud the name of the firefighter we were running in honor of...and it was with great pride and admiration that I did this. Thank you for your sacrifice and may God Bless you and your family. Best regards, Jamie

Dear Mr Fehling,
On September 11, 2001 you died a hero. A couple weeks ago on the actual anniversary our school released balloons in honor of all of the victims and first responders of 9/11. Today we planted irises in your honor. I will most definitely pray for your family and friends. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for them. I want to thank you for what you did on September 11,2001. Your are truly amazing.

You were always a calm, funny and genuine person who I miss to this very day. I wish we had more contact after you left the NYPD, but- I am glad to have had the privledge of knowing you. Rest in peace, brother. Until we meet again.

Lee:

Its been ten years you've been gone, and 21 since HS graduation. Back then we were band geeks, but we sounded pretty damn good in retrospect. We were all pretty rowdy in class too.

Aside from that, we were never really close, but when I found out you were killed, I felt that something was taken away from me. I don't discount the loss of your closest loved ones and family. I'm just saying that because of your humanity, your doing your instinctual mission to save people, your loss is felt by whomever knew you.

Your sacrifice has meaning which makes your legacy eternal.

I was one of Lee's field training officers in the 109th Pct. As a primarily Asian community, we used to joke that he was only assigned there because the community was expecting Lee Feh Ling. He was the whitest Korean officer there. Lee was a modest guy with a wry sense of humor. Good wry humor requires a bit of intelligence and Lee fit that bill. I was saddened when I heard he was lost, as I did not know, at the time, that he went into the FDNY. Lee was the second friend of mine, who rolled over to the FDNY and was lost. A tragic twist of fate. However, these heros did save many lives and that will not be forgotten. [email protected].

Lee, You were my partner in NYPD for four years. I'm sorry I'm finally just now writing. It's been hard for me, but can't imagine what it's been like for your family. I love you and miss you tremendously...still. We had some great times in that car 10 hours a day writing tickets and honking that loud horn first thing in the morning while rounding the corner at the bus stop to scare those people waiting for the bus to get to work . Every morning at dunkin donuts for a coffee and a blueberry doughnut while listening to Howard Stern on the radio of course. If i called in sick, you called in sick. If you called in sick, i wasn't going to work....didn't want anyone else watching my back...didn't trust any one else but you. I had the best time with you as a partner. You were a good family man and always shared how much you loved your wife Danielle and how you picked your first born's name...always a jokester. I know you are looking down on everyone from up above and smiling. This year on 9/11 I am working. Every day, I wear my blue uniform for you. This year, I chose to have a uniform inspection on your anniversary and I'm having my whole squad wear their blues in your honor (they don't know it :-) that's our secret). After briefing I will be going to dunkin donuts for a coffee and blueberry doughnut. I will leave the passenger side seat empty. Come visit. I miss you my friend....my partner...My Hero.

I wandered through the sea of flags and memorial biographies dedicated to each and every soul that was lost on 9/11. I stopped at Lee's flag and paused to read a little bit about him.

I am attaching an image I shot this morning at the Tempe Beach Park Memorial.

Lee Fehling, you made English and Band classes so much fun for me at HT! I was quiet and I found it hard to make friends at times, and I remember you always making me feel more at ease. You would always make me laugh by whispering jokes quietly to me w/o the teachers ever hearing you. I always forced myself to hold in my laughing so that I would not get in trouble...Thank you for writing such kind words in my yearbook...I read it from time to time...I am so glad that I knew you. Little did I know that you would grow up to be a TRUE AMERICAN HERO...God Bless you, your family and friends, now and always.

Dear Mr. Fehling,

I think you are a true hero. You put your life on the line to help others in a tragedy. I define a hero as someone who enjoys helping other people and is very brave. I truly believe you are both of these things. September 11, 2001 was a terrible day in America but you saved a lot of people’s lives that day. You put the safety of other people before your own safety. I think You did a very heroic thing that day.

So many others and I thank you for your brave actions on September 11. The sacrifice of your life is the biggest one you can give, and you gave it. You protect so many people everyday and I am very thankful! I know your wife Danielle and daughter Kaitlin are very thankful and miss you very much. Even though you didn’t get to meet your younger daughter Megan I’m sure she misses you too. You made so many people laugh and smile. We are all very thankful for your brave and thoughtful actions on that tragic day.

We will always remember your heroic deeds on September 11, 2001. You are a great person! Even though we haven’t met, I think you are a brave and wonderful person.
Thank you.

You were a great person who could influence people to help our country when it’s in need of some help. You left behind two daughters and your wife you were out there risking your life everyday because you put other people’s needs before your own and your country thanks you for that.

Your wife and kids really love and miss you and so does your whole family, Megan would have loved to know you really were a good person you cared more about other people than about yourself.

America will always remember you for being a loving father and husband but most of all for being a true hero for our country and we thank you a lot for what you have done for our country.

Thank you so much for what you have done you are a true hero.

Sincerely,

Lee,

I’m sorry it took so long for me to write this. I think about you often. Your amazing sense of humor, the great guy you were and the friend I knew so long ago. Every once in a while I catch myself saying, ‘You all of that, but you ain’t none of this’. Or I tell the story about how you got the quarter back. If I’m in the med unit, driving down the road and the Miami Sound Machine song comes on I may just grab the mic and sing like we used to do so many years ago. Rich, Danielle, you and I, we were a family a long time ago, and those were good days. I’m sorry for the way it fell apart, but I know in my heart you and Danielle ended up in a great place. I remember the day after my wedding driving up to Genovese to drop off the table cameras for processing, and seeing you, Danielle and your daughter getting ice cream at Carvel. I paused, I smiled, and I was so happy for you guys. I wanted to tell you that, and the biggest regret I have in my life is that I didn’t talk to you that day. It was the last time I saw you. I keep a 9/11 patch on my turnout coat in honor of you, Lee, my old friend, my brother, my hero.

Lee I feel like I know you- even though we never met. Tommy has such great memories of you and thinks of you often, and as a true friend, not afraid to bust his chops when necessary, not afraid to knock him down a peg when he needed it. He appreciated your friendship and I think was (secretly) jealous of your career path- he spoke of you often. This is so silly, but he felt so badly about the wedding check that at the HTHS reunion he had another gift for you...we missed you, and never got another chance to see you. I am sure that you carefully protect your family from where you are now. I think of your little girls often. You must be very proud. I just wanted to take a moment to thank all the people who have left messages in Lees'tribute book. Your thoughts & prayers are very special to me & my family. The strength & love of the American people is what makes this country so great! I know Lee would think that too much of a fuss is being made over him. Firefighters never consider themselves heroes. They're just doing their job. One they truly love & would never trade for anything! I know too, that he would be thankful to all the people who have sent caring thoughts to his wife, children & family.

Thank you again to everyone & please know that I have read every message & appreciate all that has been done for me & my children. God bless all of you & GOD BLESS THE USA!

I am so sorry to hear about the lost of Lee Fehling. Though I did not know him, I feel a certain kinship with Lee, because I am also a Fehling. I have done much work on the genealogy of the Fehling family of Wisconsin and have always wonder if there was any connection with the Fehling's of NY. Even though I have never found one, I have found that both the Fehling's of Wisconsin and NY are not afraid to serve their country. In this I feel that at least a spiritual link to all those Fehling's in NY, like the ones in Wisconsin, who have served and who have, like LEE gave with their lives to help other and make this a truly wonderful county. I'm proud to carry the name FEHLING. God be with you, Lee and with your family. God Bless

PS. By the way my oldest daughter is named Danielle, she’s 21.

Dear Mrs. Bishoff, Danielle and Family,

I recived my 9.11 bracelet from a friend today. I was proud to wear the bracelet to remember and to honor all of the brave people that lost their lives on 9.11. I went to the site to find out more information about ordering bracelets and realized that I could find out about Lee. I cannot describe the feeling to now have Lee personally identified with the bracelet that I will wear. I ache for your family. He was so young and dedicated. I can tell from his picture that he must have been very loving and warm. His picture and the bracelet with his name will inspire me to make the best of each day. I will say a prayer for Lee every day.

My thoughts are with all of you.

Sincerely,

My father grew up in Queens & Brooklyn, and was in the boy scouts with a George Fehling. Years later, as grown men with their own families, the two bumped into each other on a Manhattan street and rekindled their friendship. As a young boy, I frequently played with George Fehling's children during visits to their home on Staten Island. Several years ago I heard that one of the children, Paul, joined the NYFD. Though I was relieved to discover, after several months of searching, that Paul Fehling was not among the lists of the missing, I was saddened to see that another Fehling had died in the course of duty. I still don't know whether these two families are closely related -- I have been too timid to call Paul or his mother, lest I needlessly stir up bad memories for them both. Regardless, my thoughts and sympathies are with both Fehling families today.

Hi to all the Fehlings and Bischoffs,

I used to babysit for both of your families when you were toddlers. I am now living in Ireland, and my mother told me in October that she met Lee-Lee's funeral coming over the bridge in Wantagh. I was so shocked - my memories of him are as

a small boy, around 4 or 5, and he

was the funniest kid to babysit for-

always up to something (although Jimmy, Tommy, Brucie, Billy and even

Diana were close behind). I want to remember him as that smiling, happy

little boy - and I hope you all have a warm memory of him to cling to. My heart goes out to you all.

What a great smile you gave me when I read Lee's story. His pranks continue making people smile. May his pranks, his laughter, life and love live on in those who love him. We thank Lee for saving and protecting others as a firefighter. Such dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by the warm moments in your lives together. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Lee.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Lee,

What wonderful words have been written about you! I could not help but smile as I read your tribute.

I never met you or your loved ones, but I wanted you all to know you continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, especially on this Christmas Day!

I believe you are in heaven because that is where Angels live! Rest In Peace, Lee and may God protect your loved ones and fellow firefighters everyday! God Bless you!

I've waited so long to write this note because I kept trying to find the best words to express the feelings that my family and I have in our hearts. There are simply no words to tell you how our hearts ache for those who we have never met and yet feel related to. My husband is a volunteer firefighter here in Wylie, Texas, and he carries the MercyBand of Lee Fehling in his bunker coat on each call he answers. It serves as a tribute to Mr. Fehling and all firefighters who have given the ultimate sacrifice to save others. I am so glad there was a picture of Mr. Fehling on this site, so that we could have in our minds a face to go with the name on our band...the face and name of a true American hero. Our prayers will remain ongoing.
