Andre Fletcher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2001.
Type A-Plus

Andre and Zackary Fletcher were the only African-American twins in the Fire Department. Both rushed to the World Trade Center; Andre Fletcher never returned.

"We both have Type A-plus personalities," said Zackary Fletcher, who works at Engine Company 4 in Manhattan. "Anything that reeks of excitement, adventure and danger. That was us." Andre Fletcher, 37, was a member of Rescue Company 5 in Staten Island.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Andre Fletcher attended the Bronx High School of Science, but later transferred to Brooklyn Technical High School to be near his brother and to play on the sports teams, which Bronx Science did not have. In 1994, both brothers joined the Fire Department. When he learned that the department had no baseball team, Andre Fletcher organized one. On the department football team, both played the same positions: wide receiver and defensive back.

Today, Zackary Fletcher is watching out for Andre's son, Blair, 12. He also talks of dreams, now dashed, that the two brothers had of modeling in tandem for TV commercials. The two had located an agent and were planning a trip to California to sell themselves.

Zackary Fletcher said his parents, Lunsford and Monica, were having a hard time, but it was especially difficult for him: "I miss him more than anyone else."

I am looking up a few names that stood out as I took pictures yesterday at the 911 memorial. Andre had beautiful flowers in his name that caught my eye.
Sounds like he was a pretty amazing guy and brother.

Just came across this name as I followed the Newsday link and checked my neighborhood. This name intrigued me as I am a diehard fan of West Indies cricket (growing up in Guyana in the 80's & 90's).

I just want to to say thank you to Andre (never knew him) & everyone who unfortunately passed away during this tragic and horrific time.

I remembered the day 9/11/2001 happened. I was in mid-town for a job interview and after, as I walked the side-walks of NYC, I heard of the first "hit."

It was shocking and everyone around thought it was an accident. Not long after, it happened a 2nd time. Folks got skeptical and scared. As 21 yo, working part time and going to college full-time and coming from Guyana 4 years earlier, all I can think of is to grab a disposable kodak camera from a vendor nearby. I bought one and tried to take a few pics. I have no idea what happened to the camera or the clicks taken (for good reason, I suppose, it's been missing since).

May everyone who passed as a result of this tragedy, rest in eternal peace.

Having known Andre through station 2 in NB, he was always a gentleman. He cared for everyone. He was just an all around good guy taken way to soon. 23 years later and I think of his kindness often.

I just came upon this page about Andre's death and would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to MonicaI and Lunny and their family. I used to work with Monica, aka Mona, Andre's mother and still remember how she used to get up early every morning to iron shirts for Andre and Zackary so they were perfectly dressed for school when they were growing up. Monica was so proud of both of her children. Andre's death is a terrible loss for which no words are adequate.

I had the honor to run in the Hero Rush in Ocala, FL in memory of Andre G. Fletcher. We ran for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, and we had a moment of silence and then had the honor to read aloud the name of our firefighter we were running in memory of, and I was so proud to read Andre's name. We will continue to pray for him and all the others who lost their lives on September 11. God Bless. Best regards, Joseph

Cause heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you

Yes, Heaven was needing a hero
and that's you

FM Andre Fletcher was never known to me before his heroic death. He willingly gave up his life so strangers may live. Laying down one's life for someone you know is great. But laying down your life for those you don't know, is awesome. May the joy and wisdom of the Lord instill itself more and more in the lives of Zachary, Blair, parents, grandparents and all those left behind. May they feel and experience God's love and wisdom more and more through Andre's life and death. Let's not let his family be forgotten for their horrific loss and the terrible void they must endure every minute they're still breathing. Please Lord, let the death and life of Andre be a glory to You and for Andre's family and other loved ones left behind to be strengthened and comforted and know[feel] Your loving and wisdom ways.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Miss You...

So be it as my fate

No task in life could be more fullfilling

Should I be put down to rest

Know that I died doing

The duty I loved Best

Sweet Andre,

In my heart I knew you had perished in the 9/11 attack against the U.S.A., but it wasn't until yesterday, 5/11/2003 that I received confirmation. It was miraculous that of the millions of people in the world, I happened to find and talk with a close friend of yours. Divine intervention brought information to me, that I never wanted to hear. I will always remember your vivacious personality, your smiling face and your adorable New York accent! I treasured our friendship and have missed talking with you. Words can never express how appreciative I am for having met you. I hope and pray for all of us who will be missing you. The world was safe because you helped everyone and gave so much of yourself. If there's a baseball team in heaven, I know you'll be managing it and playing! I miss you my friend and will never forget you! Big Hugs from Michelle in Cali. P.S. My bro is still playing in the MSBL! :)

If you're asking if I needed you the answer was Forever.

If you're asking if I was ever mad at you the answer was Never.

If you're asking what I valued the answer was You.

If you're asking if I loved you as my special friend the answer was I do.

If you're asking if I miss you the answer is of course I do.

And If you're asking If I think of you the answer is always

When I think of the times you made me laugh,

It makes me feel so sad to know that you had somewhere to go.

God knows Ill miss you.

It breaks my heart to know youll be away, so far,

But Ill be with you.

We’ll meet in heaven some day.

Till then Ill just look to the stars

And when I feel a breeze, your spirit’s running free..

I know you’ve smiled at me with love,

And I can feel your touch.

I will remember..

PROMISE

I will not forget you..

Ill never let the memories fade,

I WONT FORGET.

There are no good byes,

Just a pause to celebrate your life.

With all that’s in me,

Ill keep your flame burning bright

As you walk into eternal light

And when I feel a breeze, your spirit’s running free.

I know you’ve smiled at me with love,

And I can feel your touch.

Its Me... Again....

Thank you for all the long talks and your encouragement with my Criminal Justice degree and police applicant stuff. Sorry about the ‘misunderstanding’ with the firemen’s ball thingy with Sharon. Talked to your dad last week. He’s real cool. I can see where you got your sweetness from! Watch over my dad will ya? Love Always, Donna

My father is a retired Firefighter in Jacksonville, Florida. He is now the head of the Fire Museum and on September 11 was given the name of Andre G. Fletcher along with a tree to plant in his honor at the Museum. He has planted the tree and will daily remember the sacrifice that was made by a fellow comrade. Thank you for the legacy of honor and courage that you have left for others to follow. My dad has always been proud to serve. It was his desire to know more about the man that he has honored. Our love and prayers are with the family.

I miss you so deeply my soul aches...and yet I know that God blessed me beyond measure when he allowed me to be a part of your life..and you a part of mine..
