Lt. Charles Garbarini,
20 years ago I sent a donation to help the families of those who were lost or missing after 9/11. In return I was sent a bracelet with your name imprinted on it. I wanted to find out about you and I learned so much about how much you are loved. 20 years still seems like yesterday in so many ways and I know you are missed and remembered by your family and friends. Tomorrow I will once again place that red metal bracelet on my wrist. I will look at the inscription and I will say your name and to everyone that asks I will tell them about the brave firefighter who gave his life to save others and who would pass out business cards saying "You light 'em, We fight 'em."
I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. Never Forget.

I climbed today for Lt. Charlie Garbarini. I did it to honor his ultimate sacrifice. My thoughts and love go out to his family and friends. I am a firefighter in Nederland, CO. 343 of us usually do 110 flights in Denver to honor our fallen brothers, but this year we couldn’t get 343 together in a stairwell. We chose to honor the 343 with a mountain version of Firefighter Stephen Siller’s 2.5 mi walk/run to the towers. May Charlie RIP. We will never forget.

Dear Charlie
Just thinking of you makes me laugh because you were hilarious all the time. As a friend of Janet from our time studying in Italy, upon return to the Bronx, I got to spend lovely times with many of the Garbarinis. I miss Bobby too.
For years I walked on 58th street every day to get coffee from the high school I taught at. One day after a few years I looked carefully at the antique firehouse that I passed every day and read the plaque. Charles Garbarini's name stared at me. I broke down in the street weeping, realizing he had so bravely passed in 9/11. Students brought me back to class and I continuously share your story with them from year to year, making our history live in you. When I asked at the station if anyone knew you, they explained how so many died from that firehouse. Much love to you and Janet, Beryl, Cathy and Joanie. My 15 year old son is interested in interning at the memorial.

On September 8, 2013, over 900 participants climbed 110 stories in memory of the 403 Fallen Firefighters, Police Officers, and Port Authority Officers who died 12 years ago on September 11, 2001. They climbed, they raised funds, they spread the word about the sacrifices made by public safety officials every day.
I am proud of my husband, Firefighter Dustin Kuhn of Miramar FD, as he climbed the 110 flights and rang the bell in honor of Lt. Charles William Garbarini.
We are forever grateful for your service here on Earth and now in Heaven and from what we gather you probably have them all laughing :)
May your family find comfort that he continues to be honored and never forgotten.

I miss you! I was at Dt Patricks on the 10th and saw you there. I was at Ground 0 on 9/11 and saw you there. I see you everywhere. I here a quick remark and know it's you. I see a bike go by and strain to see, it's you. I need help and wish you were around. I sometimes remember putting the towel around you to put on your bathing suit when you were 3 or 4. And the Movies at 5. and the deli for candy. I want to keep only those memories but when I walk in a tight space with a low ceiling I always think about you, not in a good way and I can't breathe. I am 62 now. 10 years have passed. I am closer to seeing you than I was 10 years ago. It doesnt scare me. There is some comfort in it. I miss you. I don't know if I told you that a few years ago I went to a psychic. She knew nothing about our relationship. I told her I did'nt know where my brother was. She asked if he was married. I said he was. She said she was confused. She said she sees him in a hotel. Was I sure he wasn't with someone. She said 2 people were there to meet him. Initial R and G. On Friday, my six year old daughter's first grade class participated in a walk to honor the memories of those lost on 9/11. On her chest she wore the names of three of the victims. Charles William Garbarini was one of those names.
I have to admit that, while I was profoundly affected by the events of 9/11 and have always spent that day in reflection, I never was completely immersed in the sense of loss like I was today. Charles, this is the first time that I put a name to this tragedy. The sense of loss to this country and for our children is stronger now because of that...and I know that I will never forget your name and now your face.
To your family....My daughter will always know what a hero Charles was, and we will honor him and remember him and pass his legacy onward. Thank you for your sacrifice.
We will NEVER FORGET.

Today, I read about a Facebook application sponsored by 911memorial.org, which assigns you a name at random to memorialize on your "status". When I clicked the application, it gave me the name of Charles William Garbarini. I decided that, to properly honor him, I should look him up and learn something about this honorable soul. I learned that he was not only a brave firefighter, but a charmer with a sense of humor and a dazzling smile. I read tributes to him and was awed by how much he was loved. I am proud to honor Charley (whose name is shared by my late beloved dad) by placing him on my wall, and he will be in my thoughts and prayers particularly over the next few days. To his family, I hope his grace brings you peace. We are all so very grateful to Charley.

Hi Charles,
I am walking to the top of the Aon building here in Chicago tomorrow with the Chicago Fire Department and many others for a 9/11 memorial. Each of the participants have been assigned a NYPD fireman to "climb for". I was assigned your name and your picture is on my bib for tomorrows event. It has been wonderful getting to learn about. You sounded like you had quite the sense of humor! It's hard to believe it's been 10 years. I am so honored to be partaking in this memorial to honor you, and all those who fought to save the lives of others that day. Thank you.

Thinking of the Garbarini Family...
As a native New Yorker who has spent many years living in the Colorado Rockies, I was given the opportunity to carry a photo of Charles at lat September's first Annual Red Rocks Stair Climb to benefit the Twin Towers Orphan Fund.
Each participant wore a fallen firefighter close to their heart for the climb. As a former Long Island girl who was deeply touched by September 11th, I thought it would be nice to look you up and let you know that people like me still think about your loss and remember your family, even these many miles away.
Two of my first cousins are NYFD and my brother is a West Metro Firefighter and one of the major organizers of this climb just outside of Denver.
I will proudly pin the photo of Charles to my shirt once again and send my continued prayers to all of you who knew him...
Best, Maureen

Dear Joanie and Peggy,
I got a call a short while ago from an old friend who wanted to know if I'm still in touch with Andrea. Once she knew I was, she told me I needed to get a message to her. She had just returned from a reading with a psychic after the recent loss of her mother. In the middle of the reading, the psychic was interrupted by a fireman, whose name was Charley. He said he "passed" on 911 and knew this person would find a way to tell his wife that he is doing fine and was with her every day. I called Andrea who said she was somewhat sceptical and suggested that if I called for an appointment they could google me and get information. I laughed knowing that I would never turn up on google..but since I was online I decided to google myself. I almost fell off my chair...the third link down was for Lt. Charles William Garbarini's guestbook--where I had left an entry several years ago. Leave it to Charley to make his presence known. I hope you find peace in this and are left smiling thinking about the joy he brought to you and the gift that his life was.

NEVER FORGET.
never forget the day the twins vanished for us never to see.
and in this site of misfortune it brought us all unity
Never forget the day they'll never come home
and never forget how much they are now known
never forget the pain and grief caused by this event
never forget the rubble and the fallen cement
never forget the day the whole world came to a stop
never forget on what many had already forgot

The Apples Core.
Deep within the apples core
Stood 2 twins that vanished from our eyes
Deep within the apples core
Was painful tears and silent cries
Deep within the apples core
Many felt pain in their hearts
Deep within the apples core
The apples core was soon to parts
Deep within the apples core
The entire apple seemed to mourn
Deep within the apples core
Many lost what they adored

I just recently learned of my old friends death when I was trying to look him up on Thanksgiving I just wanted say Thanks to someone I had lost touch with who had an impact on my life. Charly was a person I spoke of fondly and humorously. I had the privelege to work with Charly in Plumbers Local 2. He was my partner for 2 plus years and they were the 2 best and funniest years of my career. Those of you who know him know what I mean.Charly was one of a kind and I speak of him frequently even as recently as a week ago.Today was the day I said I have got to search for Charly and I tell you I am still in shock, and will be for sometime,I am ticked I didnt do this sooner.I am proud to say Charly is my friend and he is welcome at my campfire anytime. I just send my deepest belated condolances to Andrea his sons and his entire family. The greatest thing about Charly is he has been with me for all these years and will continue to be with me for the rest of mine.Charly your the best.
