Anthony Starita Obituary

Relaxing With a Cigar
Cigars were a necessary accessory for Anthony Starita. He had one in his mouth when he went to beach, when he puttered around his backyard in Westfield, N.J., and when he relaxed on his deck every night after dinner. "He liked the flavor," said his wife, Diane Starita. "He didn't always actually smoke them, but he would just have one in his mouth to sort of chew on."

Mr. Starita, 35, also chewed on coffee straws, mostly when he got nervous about a deal at his job as a government bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald. "When he got a little nervous he put the straws in his mouth and he would start wiping his hands with napkins," said Eddie De Castro, Mr. Starita's longtime friend and former trading partner. "Those were his two things."

Last year, Mr. Starita gave up his full- time golf membership at a country club so that he could spend more time with his wife and two children, Kaila, 6, and Jason, 3.

After the terrorist attacks, Mrs. Starita told the children that their father had gone to heaven. Kaila wondered why "does he have to be with God?" Mrs. Starita said. "My 3-year-old wanted to know if we could call Daddy in heaven."

Anthony Starita, 35, enjoyed trader's life Anthony M. Starita loved being a trader.

He joined off-the-wall bets at Cantor Fitzgerald, where wagering traders would put money on almost anything, even who could gain the most weight.

He had a trader's humor. "He always looked for a joke in everything," said his wife, Diane Starita. "He told things the way they were. Some people were offended by it, some saw the humor."

After 16 years at Cantor Fitzgerald, he knew his colleagues had equally mischievous senses of humor. When the Starita family went on vacation, he would never tell his co-workers where, exactly, they were staying. If his co-workers knew the name of the hotel, "they'd have $200 in room service sent up," Diane Starita said.

Even faced with $200 worth of room service he didn't want, he might have laughed. When he was 5 years old, he got a crew cut. It was his only childhood crew cut, but it was enough. After that, everyone in the neighborhood called him Fuzz. One of his sisters, MaryAnn Jennings, called him Fuzz for the rest of his life.

"He was such a shrug-your-shoulders kind of guy," his sister said. "Nothing bothered him."

Mr. Starita started working at Cantor Fitzgerald part-time in 1987 while he was still a student at Baruch College. After he graduated in 1989, he began working full-time. At the time of his death, he was a limited partner. He had never worked anywhere else.

Cantor Fitzgerald was full of young guys just starting their families, Diane Starita said, and Mr. Starita, 35, was no exception. He adored playing with their children, Kaila, 6 and Jason, 3, at their Westfield home. "Neighbors who don't even know us have been ringing my bell, saying they always saw him outside with the children," said his wife of 10 years.

The last time the whole family was together was Labor Day, when everyone gathered at MaryAnn Jennings' house. Mr. Starita and his father, Walter, stood in the backyard, patiently pitching balls to the younger Starita's children, his eight nieces and nephews and other friends' children.

The Staritas belonged to Colonia Country Club, where Mr. Starita was an all-weather golfer. He also was a recreational skier. The couple stayed close to a half-dozen traders even after most of them left Cantor Fitzgerald.

Last year, around this time, Mr. Starita began looking for another job, too. Instead, the company promoted him to the government agencies desk.

In addition to his wife, his children, his sister and father, Mr. Starita is survived by his mother, Marie of Staten Island; and another sister, Linda Travers of Staten Island.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, at Westfield Avenue and First Street. A reception will follow in the church gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Starita Children Trust, in care of Steven Curiale, 346 Orenda Circle, Westfield, N.J. 07090.

Diane,
Your story has inspired me to teach others about your faith. In my grade 11 world religions class we were assigned a project that would pick a current event article and inform our class about it. I chose yours, so I would be able to talk to my peers about not giving up faith. I thought I should let you know your story has touched people everywhere. My prayers are with you.

Tears came to my eyes as I wrote this note, just as they did last Friday June 16, 2006 when I attended my son’s graduation from St. Patrick’s School, as they called my son’s name Robert Acevedo Jr. and announced that was the 5th recipient of the Anthony Starita Memorial Award. I was very touched and very proud of my son for his accomplishments. I logged onto the internet in order to know Anthony Starita’s life story. I was deeply saddened to know that this award was created due to the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001. Be assured that my son will try to honor Anthony alive at St. Peter’s Boy’s H.S. by studying hard, excelling in classes, and sports. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. I know Anthony is now in the grace of God. God Bless.

For those of you who have not been to Anthonys resting place

Anthony...
I have written notes in other areas of the internet dedicated to the 9-11 victims... But only now have I seen this one. I still miss you everyday and think about you often. You still are like the brother I wish I had.. and your god daughter Jenna talks about you often and I tell her about you so she will never forget you. I love you and hope to see you again one day up in heaven or in my dreams like I have in the past.

We have just returned from my oldest son's graduation from St. Patrick's School SI, NY. He has been chosen to receive an award in honor of Anthony Starita. This award is the most touching thing that has happened to my family. I can not express in words how proud we are to have our son Eric to be walking in the same path as Anthony. Eric will be attending St. Peters Boys H. S. this fall. Thank you for this most gracious and generous award. Anthony sounds like he was a very fun loving and caring person. May God Bless his family and friends.

Anthony,

I am the grandson of your father's first cousin, Frank. Although I do not believe we ever met, your passing, exactly one year ago today, is something that truly touched my heart in so many ways.

Ironically enough, I was supposed to also work for Cantor. I graduated from St. John's University in May of 2001. Midway through my final semester, while my job search was in full-swing, a friend of mine submitted my resume, as well as a personal referral, to a friend of hers, working for the Firm. I did not even know of this until the next day, when she informed me that they had a position they thought would be perfect for me, based on my backround and her kind words, however, they needed someone capable start immediately. Although it was an incredible opportunity, they understood that I could not go through 3+ years of college, to leave a mere month and a half before graduation.

Not a day passes that I do not wonder why that opportunity did not come two months later, and why I was not in that building, along with you. In the same, not a day passes that I do not think of you and your young family. Everynight, since that horrific day, I say a prayer for you all, and ask God to bless you all, especially your children.

Since January, I am now working for Morgan Stanley. Each of my co-workers were occupants of World Trade Center 5, and they have told me how wonderful it was working there (in the Trade Center). They told me how they worked there, shopped there, ate there, drank there, and even had their parties there. However, they also informed me of each of their own personal tales of terror, from that day.

We are now located in Jersey City, NJ. Our building is directly across the water, and everyday I look over in utter amazement, wondering how on earth something like this could ever happen.

I would like to apologize for not attending your service, along with my grandparents, and parents, but I could not bring myself to do it. I do want you to know though, that since we have moved into our permanent location, I have the prayer card from your service placed on my desk, and I will continue to keep it with me for the rest of my career.

You sound like an incredible person, with many of the same qualities as myself. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet you... I think we would have gotten along just fine. Perhaps we will meet someday. Save me a spot up there in Heaven, and in the meantime, I will continue to keep you and your family, in my thoughts and prayers always.

My heart goes out to Anthony and his family & friends... although I only knew Anthony for a brief time in our lives, I knew he was a terrific and caring guy .. we had Coached opposing Football teams in the SI Pee Wee FB League back in 1991 and 1992.. he had a great desire to teach and help kids back then, even though he did not have his own son playing ball.. that was a rare dedication ... we had an enjoyable and fruitful season and enjoyed helping each other out, whenever possible.. the kids on his team -LOVED to play for him... I wish his family well in these difficult times and pray that you have the strength to carry on as I am sure he would have wanted...

May God watch over you Anthony ...

Such a hard tragedy for adults to understand so I can imagine the confusion your children feel. I pray all your hearts find peace. We are so very sorry for your loss of Anthony. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
