Margaret Mattic Obituary

Dimples Right and Left

Margaret Mattic was the only one of the five Mattic girls of Detroit to have dimples. Right and left, the dimples set off the shy smile and the lilting, gentle voice that everyone remarked on. As a young girl, in elementary school productions, she played Snow White as well as Gretel in "Hansel and Gretel."

The love of performing stuck with Ms. Mattic, a surprise since she seemed so quiet. She studied theater at Wayne State University. After college, more productions followed, mostly in community theater, often in plays like "Sty of the Blind Pig," the 1971 work by Phillip Hayes Dean about a black family in Chicago.

Eventually, Ms. Mattic wound up in Manhattan to pursue acting. She usually took temporary jobs, typically as a receptionist, so she could go to auditions.

Recently, she talked to friends about producing and starring in a one-woman play she had written, called "The Vision," about how the gift of prophecy changed several generations of a family. At 51, she also wanted the comfort of a permanent job, so she became a customer service representative for General Telecom in the World Trade Center. "Every employer she ever worked for always loved her voice," recalled her sister, Jean Neal, 56. "It was so soothing and gentle and soft."

It's Monday, 2017 September 11 and my memories with my families are of a vibrant, gracious Margaret who will never be forgotten - neither will her loving and gentle Mom who joined Margaret in Heaven's fold...

To Margaret's Family: We will always cherish Margaret and remember the wonderful actress she was at Wayne State University's Black Theatre.

To the late great Margaret Mattic,

I told the students at Wayne State University Upward Bound program all about you.

Every September 11, I remind Detroiters of the only Detroiter killed in the World Trade Center.

I would hope the Detroit Public Schools
wound have a tribute to you every Sept. 11 on Patriot's Day @ Cass Tech.

I hope Diana Lewis & Glenda Lewis will honor you at Cass Tech High School with the students and Cass Tech
Alumni.

What more can I do to honor you? I am
brainstorming...

I would like to start a Juneteenth 150+
Hisotrical Society and include you in
my presentations. To the family of Margaret Mattic and everyone email me

I am still coming to grips with the fact that I will never see your beautiful smile or her your gentle voice again...To your sisters: Your mother always made me feel at home in her house and, she treated my family in the same manner as we visited with her and Margaret during our years at WSU...My Godmother, Annie Gamble died in 2013 February and, she always spoke of how she missed Margaret...She moved to Florida in 2007 but kept in touch with your Mom for a while...Margaret will always remain in our hearts and minds....If our fellow Thespian, Arlease, was still here she would honor Margaret as her son's Godmother and one of her best friends,,,So, I do so in Arlease's honor...

Dear Margaret,
We all miss you so much; your shy smile, your quiet, gentle and caring ways. We miss as well, your strength of character and unwavering loyalty to Faith, Family and Friends; the kind that looms larger than mere physical stature.
In my mind's eye, I can still see you in our Auditorium classroom sessions with Mrs. Dorian during our years at Stephens Elementary School in Detroit, always in neatly pressed dresses adorned with simple, pretty trim. I can also hear your voice singing America the Beautiful with the soprano section, in soaring “descant” counterpoint to the melody of the Choir.
It's funny what you remember most about someone with whom you've shared “important” moments in life; our challenges in competition with Peggy (Farmer) Ruffin during Spelling Bees and other academic pursuits. Against you and Peggy, other students were really only hoping for a “Third Place” finish. And all the afternoon sermons attended at New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, after faithfully attending Sunday School mornings.
And then, there are the more tender memories that children have, playing Hansel to your Gretel in an elementary school play and watching your performance of Snow White; all the while, wondering how someone otherwise so quiet can blossom into a courageous character role.
Well, I guess that question was soundly answered as you and Peggy pursued your “Thespian” aspirations at Wayne State University School of Theatre. And from there, you continued on to New York; some might say to pursue your life's work but as I have so fondly recalled here, you've been living it all along.
So on this solemn Day of Remembrance, We say “Thank You,” Margaret Mattic. You have left us all with many dear and fond Memories.
Yours, Daune (Donnie) Elston

Although I responded to another site honoring my late friend Margaret Mattic, I want her family to know that each tribute to her is an opportunity to let the world know what a magnificently generous and loving person she was. Among her many attributes, she was Godmother to our late friend, Arlease Tatum Smith's first born son. Margaret would also want us to pay tribute to her good friend Arlease as her godson and his family honors her memory.

My family and I honor Margaret throughout the year. She will always be loved and remembered by many people. May God richly bless and keep Margaret's family.

My name is MarJean. I ran a marathon in St. George, Utah that first Saturday in October 2001. We all ran in tribute to the victims of 9/11 and in honor of our country and our country's heroes. The marathon runners ran with a name of one of the victims printed on our race number. I had the name of Margaret Mattic from the World Trade Center.

I have run 13 marathons and numerous other races. I have never had such a spiritually impacted experience as this. I thought of Margaret all through the marathon with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I have kept that race number with Margaret's name and would love to send it to her family if you would like. I have thought of her many time since.

It wasn't until years later that I found this site and was able to put a picture to the name I have thought of many times since. What a beautiful, sweet person she is. We are about the same age.

In February I had the privilege of being a volunteer at the Utah 2002 Winter Olympics. Again, this was a time to honor our country, victims, and heroes. I carried Margaret's name with me.

I just wanted to pass on this long overdue tribute and feelings I have carried with me all these years. I pray the Lord will comfort and bless you all as family and friends of Margaret. I am honored to have had this distant connection.

To the family of Margaret - my friend and fellow Thespian at Wayne State:

Margaret will always remain in my heart and the heart of all of us who were a part of the Black Arts Students of Wayne State University (BASWSU)...

She will never be forgotten and her memory will be forever treasured.

My husband, grandchildren and I, were very happy to have the opportunity to commenorate Margaret with the production of her play - hosted by Channel 07's Diana Lewis.

It was a special moment for my husband and grandchildren to meet Margaret's family (especially her mother) because I have spoken so fondly of everyone for many years.

May God bless and keep you all...

Though I didn't know Margaret I can tell she was a very special person blessed with talent. I would have loved to hear the voice that touched so many others. She may not be here on Earth, but she's alive and well in God's kingdom, that much I have faith in, for the good are blessed with eternal life through our savior, Jesus Christ. I'd like to extend my sympathies and prayers to her loved ones. May God bless Margaret's family and take care of her in Heaven.

On the eve of 9/11 (9/10/02), Ms. Mattic's mother and sisters did an interview with Diana Lewis (channel 7 news) and it really tocuhed my heart and led me to this guest book today. From her mother's words, I know that Ms. mattic is resting in the heavens with our Lord and Savior and for those who loved her and knew her personally, find comfort in the word of God. I send prayers up for the Mattic family and friends of Ms. Margaret Mattic. God is still in control and he does not make any mistakes. just continue to "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to your own understanding"

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Margaret Elaine Mattic - a true thespian with melodic tones which led to her voice-over work in N.Y.,

was a pioneer in the organization of Black Theatre at Detroit's Wayne

State University. We will forever honor her contributions and memory.

Her love for children was highly reflected in children's theatre. She fought for the equality of Third World women and children for

many years. It is in her honor that I continue to fight for educational equality for the children of our subdivision. She will also be honored today, 11 December in our

subdivision holiday newsletter. Our holiday light display is for all those we lost on 11 September and, especially for Margaret! I

will always cherish her goodness

and the many moments we spent together.
