Edward Strauss Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
Eagles and Baseball Caps
Edward Strauss loved the eagle. He was captivated by its appearance, its bearing, what it stood for. "He felt it was a majestic animal," said his widow, Jane. "And he was a patriot."

Thus Mr. Strauss, 44, a Port Authority manager, maintained a collection of eagles ‹ the porcelain kind. Most of the replicas he kept in a curio cabinet at his home, but he always had a few on display in his office. He liked to gaze at them and have them nearby for others to see.

A devotee of Star Trek, he also had a thing about baseball caps. When he saw a cap, he bought it. Dozens of them accumulated. Caps bearing Looney Tunes characters were a particular weakness. He was a big man (size 22 neck). "Finding a cap that fit his head was amazing," Mrs. Strauss said.

Mr. Strauss was particular about dividing home tasks fairly with his wife. He insisted on doing all the food shopping (his wife cooked). Why? He was expert at detecting the best bargains.

"He would cut out coupons and everything," Mrs. Strauss said. "He did the food shopping with his mother, so he really knew how to do it."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 16, 2001.

Edward Strauss, 44, always on the scene Whether it was clearing out his mother-in-law's garage to helping a neighbor haul a big-screen television into his home or assisting one of six siblings with a home repair job, Edward Strauss was always there to lend a hand.

The 44-year-old operations chief for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was described by family members as a gentle giant who shared generously his time and talents with friends, family and colleagues rarely asking for anything in return.

The Edison resident was last seen grabbing a bullhorn and running to help evacuate the World Trade Center buildings after two hijacked plants slammed into the two towers on Sept. 11.

"When we heard what happened to the buildings, we knew he was in there," recalled his sister, Theresa Strauss Wood, who lives in Iselin. "From the time he was young, he was taking care of people. That's probably the way he died."

Mr. Strauss joined the Port Authority at 17, working inside the Lincoln Tunnel in a glass booth ready to come to aid of motorists if their vehicle broke down, his father, Edward, said. He rose to his job as operations chief after 24 years spending time at four of the facilities run by the authority, according to his wife, Jane, who met him while working as a toll collector at the tunnel.

"He was a very giving person," she said. "Anybody who needed him, he was there -- at work, at home, anywhere,"

An avid Giants fan and reader of science fiction and military history, Mr. Strauss, who was born in Iselin, was looking forward to enjoying the new family room in his Edison home, which was equipped with a state-of-the-art stereo surround system. "He loved music: from classic to Zydeco and everything in between."

After the first plane hit, Mr. Strauss called his wife and told her he gotten out of his basement office, but advised her he would be busy the rest of the day.

"There's comfort in knowing he was doing what he loved," his sister, Theresa Wood, said. "A big reason why 25,000 people got out of those towers was because of dedicated Port Authority people like Ed."

Besides his wife and sister, Mr. Strauss is survived by his two sons, Justin, 25, and Edward, 12, his parents, Edward and Virginia Strauss of Plano, Texas; three other sisters, Barbara Eicholtz of Colonia, Gia Strauss Teeple of Iselin, and Veronica Strauss Johnson of Plano, Texas; and two brothers, Jay Strauss of Woodbridge and Vincent Strauss of Iselin.

A memorial Mass for Mr. Strauss will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Cecelia in Iselin.

I hung out with Ed (or Eddie or just plain "Strauss" as we would say) back when were just kids on the streets and woods in Iselin in the 60's and early 70's. We did a lot of good stuff together, a lot of good memories. I hadn't seen Ed since he was just married when he was ~18. Very sad to hear about his death on 9/11. It looks like he had carved out a very good life and had many people who loved him.

We Remember

Eagles soar to heights unknown
In heaven they do fly
Their mighty wings a show of strength
For all that they pass by.

Eddie soared on wings of love
To heaven on that day
Seven years since he's been gone
We remember him each day.

But Eddie flies with eagles now
He loved them it was true
He soars in heaven free in flight
Awaiting me and you.

Edward Strauss's beautiful little granddaughters,
Alicia Noelle and Logan Mary!
Dear Ed, I hope you can see what a wonderful father Justin has become. We need you to help watch over and protect our girls. If you have any pull up there we could also use another miracle. I don't want to be greedy, but I would love for Logan to see one day.
I feel extremely lucky to have married your son and given birth to your grandchildren. Justin and I were just children when we met and we've grown up into a loving couple and parents that I hope you would be proud of.
I look at your picture as I type this and I almost still can't believe it. Just know that your entire family gets through your loss together and we all miss you. Even after so much time has passed you can cry like it happened yesterday. I look at our girls and they definately have Strauss in them and remember they are part of you. God gave us some of you back, I just hope not your size!
God Bless!

Well Ed, you were awarded the Medal of Valor by Congress. Alan and the rest of the PA staff did a lot of fighting to get you recognized. We went to Washington for the Medal Ceremony. A very nice young lady from the Air Force presented it to us. Eddie was able to have his picture taken with President and Mrs. Bush. President Bush hugged your mother and expressed his condolences. Everyone at the Tiki Bar Fund raiser was impressed with the Medal. Justin is going to have it tattooed on his arm.

Theresa will be reading names at the ceremony tomorrow including your name. Life goes on but we still miss you a lot. I hope you are taking care of my father. I know he's happy with you.

Hi Eddie, well my 9/11 internal alarm went off again this year waking me at 4am so I would be wide awake to hear them say your name and watch the remembrances on TV this morning. I couldn't speak directly with Jane or little Eddie because all I did was cry like a big baby all day - thanks a lot I'm sure you are doing this on purpose - you big dope!!! So not talking to them was tough but I didn't want to upset them anymore then they already were - Nana said it was a tough day. Please keep watching over Jane, little Eddie and the rest of us - we still really need and miss you!!! All our love from California!

Dear cousin Eddie,

Forgive me for not getting to this site earlier, I know your watching from heaven. I didn't know you when you were with us, except when we were very young and we visited your family. Years back my brother, sister and mom were there for a wedding. I wish I could have gone and seen those beautiful towers you so lovingly took care of. Your Uncle Joe, my father is soon to be with you. ALS has taken it's toll on him. Do me a favor, when he gets there, show him around like you did with my siblings. I will never forget that fateful day, Eddie, though I didn't know you, tears streamed down for days. Take care Jane and boys, my prayers will forever be with you.

Well Ed we had big events this week.

Eddie just made it out of middle school on Wednesday and will be starting high school in the fall. Justin and Tasha got married on Friday.

I know that physically you could not be with us, but I felt you were with us spiritually. Father Counselman married Justin and Tasha just as you had wanted. He performed a very nice service. Theresa read a poem at the service in honor of you and Tasha's grandmother. Gomer acknowledged you in the Best Man's speech as an American hero who played a large role in making the occasion a happy one (your final paycheck was used to pay for the wedding). Justin had a bad episode with his mother when it hit him that you were not going to be at the wedding. Cried for two hours according to Tasha.

I really need your help in looking over us and getting the house sold. I can't keep up the pace and the weather is not helping.

I hope you like the memorial fund that your father started in your name. I thought "With Eddie's Help" was appropriate.

The golf outing and the wedding appeared to be big successes. Everyone said they had a good time.

We all miss you very much.

Tomorrow, June 17, 2003, Ed Strauss, the younger son of Ed, Sr. graduates from middle school. The time from September 11, 2001 to today have been a real struggle for young Ed to endure. As he enters the the next phase of his formal education, he knows that his Dad is looking down and encouraging him to do his best. Ed, Jr. knows if its to be, its up to him. God-speed to Edward Strauss, Jr. and his Mom.

I couldn't believe it when I found out you were among the missing, but then again you would have been the last one out of the towers.I remember working with you during the first attack back in 1993. The towers became your new home for weeks. I was a supervisor for a cleaning company from 1989 to 1995,and I remember one day talking to you on the plaza and you told me that you was now responsible to order all the flags for the plaza. so when I heard that they recovered the only "AMERICAN FLAG" that was flying at the WTC on Sept. 11th. I said to myself thats Ed's flag.Ed it was nice working with you I had alot of fun with all you guys. I know you must of saved alot of lives on that tragic day. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I just want to tell your wife and kids that I know in my heart you were a hero on Sept. 11TH. YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN. Say hi to Gene Raggio

September 11, 2002

It has been one year today. I still can't believe I won't see you again on earth. We went to the WTC site to see the President. It was windy and dusty. Going to New York never interested me, but I couldn't let your sons miss the opportunity to see the President. We are trying to live a normal life. I'm trying to be strong. I love you and miss you very much. And so do the people who didn't realize how important you were to them. You were a hero to many before September 11th and to many more on September 11th.

Your loving wife,

I awoke this morning at 4am hoping that the events of 9/11/01 was just a nightmare but the images on TV brought me back to reality. Eddie's loss still effects our family as if it happened yesterday. However, I know in my heart that time and the knowledge that he is in heaven will lessen our pain. God rest his soul and the souls of the many others who lost their lives that terrible day. God Bless all who honor them this day (and everyday) and God Bless America!

As we near the first anniversary, my daughter's school, St. Pius X High School, handed out wrist bracelets with names of those people who perished that tragic day. We were to wear these bracelets as a prayerful reminder of the specific person whose name appeared on our bracelet. For me, it was Edward T. Strauss. I have worn this bracelet and thought of Edward and have prayed for him and his family. Edward seemed to be a truly wonderful individual whom I'm sure God was happy to welcome home. I will continue my prayers in memory of Edward and in hopes of offering some comfort to his family.

I am one of the lucky people in this world who did know Eddie Strauss and his truly fabulous family! Eddie was such a larger than life person and all the memories of him are certainly a testament to that. I have to say, whenever I was in his company, he made me laugh. He was a big, intimidating guy - but he always made me laugh. It is so touching to read the tributes written here, Eddie just keeps touching peoples' lives. He really is a hero and an inspiration to us all. A badge doesn't make you a hero - it's what's in your heart and Eddie had the biggest one of all! God bless you and your family.

i did not know Mr. Strauss, but after reading these glowing tributes from his family and friends i feel i know him now. i would like his family and friends to know that i chose Mr. Strauss to make a qulilt block for, for the "united in memory" quilt. i will try to do him justice. my heart goes out to all who knew and loved this great man, a true hero now, and it sounds like he was, prior to this atrocity. sincerly, chris hill

Natasha Franco

February 24, 2002

My name is Natasha and I am engaged to Justin Strauss, son of Edward. The first time I met Ed, I was scared, his stature, his voice, everything just intimidated me. After time I felt comfortable with him and began to see how much he loved his family, his generousity, his sense of humor, that sometimes took me a few seconds to get and that everything big was the best way to live.

We had visited Ed at the WTC a few times and he walked around with such pride, you would have thought he owned the building. I think for me after September 11th, part of me realized he would not have left when he had the chance. I believe if he had escaped he would never have forgiven himself for those that didn't. He would have always thought he could've done more. Unfortunately, due to his heroism we have all lost, but I hope that somewhere at least one person knows they survived because of Ed.

I'd like to think that he could see all the wonderful things people have said and written about him, maybe he can so I am going to say a few things......

I'm sorry you won't be with us to celebrate the long awaited wedding day, but I hope you will watch over us with your blessing, as your son's future wife I promise to love him and do my best to make him happy. I hope that one day we will have children and that you protect them from harm and know that we will tell them about you and your heroic efforts on that tragic day. You will never be forgotten and always missed.

Eddie Strauss was the kind of person who knew how to "push buttons". Sometimes he would drive you to the brink of craziness. But he was one of the kindest people I have ever known. It never mattered what he was doing, if you called him for help (and I called him many times), he came running. Sometimes I get so mad that he was as kind and thoughtless as he was. On September 11th he didn't say to himself "I only have 2 weeks left and these buildings are not mine anymore. I don't need this grief AGAIN". He was safely out of the buildings. He could have headed uptown to catch a train for home. But nooooooooo. He had to go back in. He thought more about helping other people out than he did for his own safety. He wasn't getting paid to put his life on the line for anyone, but that was the kind of guy he was. See what I mean? Right to the bitter end, he could infuriate you. I don't know if I'll ever forgive him, but I will always admire and love him for the good person that he was. I hope I meet up with him in heaven. I wanna give him such a smack!

I worked with Ed on a number of occasions while installing the air purification systems for the World Trade Center. When I heard that Ed had died and could have walked outside to safety, but chose to stay and look after everyone else, I thought how it was just what I would have expected from him. A sad loss.

I just wanted to add a note about Ed from someone who didn't know him very well but was touched by his fundamental decency. I was always treated as if I were a very important person by Ed. I sold the Port Authority-through Ed- Air Purification systems and every time I met with Ed, I would go home afterwards and comment to my wife that Ed always treated me as if I were the CEO of major corporation. He was so down to earth and made me feel so comfortable that any nervousness I had about dealing with The WTC evaporated and I'll always be grateful-

When the attack occurred, I worried about him immediatewly, because I knew from several of our conversations what a proprietory interest and pride he took in the WTC.

He was true hero and a great guy- My sincrest condolences

I worked with Ed's Dad in NYC back in 1967 into the seventies. I am very sorry for what has happened. I know Ed Jr. was and IS a HERO. I will pray for him and his family. Ed, GOD BLESS YOU for being the HERO that you were, and will always be remembered as.

I was a Director at Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services and we operated the paper recycling center at the WTC. Ed had just been assigned responsibility for our contract, and I was sitting just outside his office waiting to meet him for the first time. He was on the phone to someone else in the building. He was tough, he was loud, he didn’t need the phone. “This,” I thought, “ is going to be trouble.” The men and women that I had working in the Recycling Center were all homeless or formerly homeless men and women. Although they had graduated from my agency’s employment program, virtually all of them still had major problems and were in various stages of rehabilitation and recovery. Their work and motivation could be inspiring one day, and horrifying the next. I figured that within a couple of weeks, a guy like this could chew us up and spit us out.

I could not have been more wrong in my first impression. As he learned about our program, about homeless people, and the positive impact the Recycling Center had on their lives, Ed became our strongest supporter at the WTC. He clearly understood and sympathized with the suffering, the challenges, and the effort our employees put into their rehabilitation; and he new how important a job was for their recovery. Not a month went by without a problem, and Ed showed remarkable patience with the trials and tribulations of our staff. When tenants complained about our employees’ work, their attitude, or their behavior, Ed was tough. We had to fix the problems, but we also had his hard and fast loyalty. Time and again Ed “went to bat” for us with demanding tenants who had little patience with our staff and their problems. Our program was a small part or his job, but his work and support played a huge role helping dozens of homeless people get their lives back on track. Ed was a remarkable man, he was a hero long before 9/11.

There are many words to describe my brother-in-law – big, loud, gruff, opinionated, and at times mean. These are words that you don't normally hear in a tribute to someone but to leave them out would not be true to Eddie. There are however many other words that also describe him, honest, proud, helpful, thoughtful, caring, loyal, dedicated, and selfless. Dedicated and selfless will be the two words that I will always say when I describe Eddie because on 9/11 he did the most dedicated and selfless act of his life - he went back into the buildings after he was out safely to help save many lives. He wasn't a fireman, he wasn't a policeman, or a rescue worker in the technical sense of the word - he was just a man who worked for the Port Authority for many years taking care of those buildings and the people who visited them everyday! He was there for the ’93 bombings, he was there on 9/11 and I’m sure that no matter what happens to the site, if new buildings are built or a memorial is constructed I'm sure Eddie will be, soaring over the area like an eagle he so dearly loved, overseeing the work just as he always did when it came to his towers!

Eddie was the husband who called his wife his number one, the father who was proud of the man Justin became and guiding of the one little Eddie would be, the son whom both sets of parents called upon for help, the big brother who would protect and help us when we needed him, the uncle who purchased the biggest stuffed bear or animal he could find each time a niece or nephew was born. The friend who would drop everything when called upon. The co-worker who made me ship Knott’s Berry Farm jellies from California to his office so his work “wives” had them for their toast & bagels. Our lives are emptier because of his loss but our hearts are full of joy, pride, and love for having known him and the way he so selflessly helped and save so many. Many will forever remember him as “I need help, I’ll just call Eddie! I will always be grateful for the many times in my life when Eddie and my dear sister Jane where there to help me. We will always love and miss you!

God Bless our hero Ed! I had the pleasure to work along with Ed and all the other angels for many years at the PA. We used to laugh because I called him brother and he called me "sis". My brother's name is Ed and his sister was named "Theresa". Always a bright smile, always caring. Sleep in God's care Eddie Strauss - you will be missed, remembered fondly and prayed for always. May God look over and care for your Jane and your boys.

Ed is my big brother, a hero to all who knew and loved him, and now too America's hero. Ed is one of the Port Authority Trade Department men who are very special heroes as they are the reason that so many people went home to their families on Sept 11th. Let us never forget what he and his team did for so many - they paid the ultimate sacrifice. Although Ed did not wear a uniform, we know what he did that day. We are so very proud of him and America should be too.

Ed leaves behind a grieving wife &, 2 kids, 6 heartbroken siblings, devasted parents and many many friends. All of our hearts are broken, we will never be the same.

rest in peace dear brother.

I love you and miss you.

We are very sorry for your loss of Edward. After reading his story, eagles have even more meaning to me than they did before, so Edward is still touching people's lives in a positive way. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

To the Strauss family. I've ed since I started working at the world trade center. He was a good friend to my fiancee Edward Calderon, who is also among the missing. Both men and all of their co-workers to me are heroes. They knew those towers better than anyone else and called the world trade there home. On sep 11 I paged your ed, looking for information on my ed because I knew they'd be out there saving lives, hopefully together, but they were not. My prayers go out to you and your family. I also met u before U came to the visitors desk one day to see him my name is rose...god bless u and your boys...

Edward T. Strauss was a true hero. He was a loving but stern father to his sons, Justin and Eddie. He was planning to speak to his son about an engagement party on September 12th. The engagement was to take place on the 11th. He was the caretaker. He took care of his in-laws home, any job his brothers or sisters might have around their homes. He was good to his friends. He loved eagles. He was an avid reader, Science Fiction television watcher, die-hard Yankees, Rangers and Giants fan. He was loyal to his teems. He preferred college ball to professional. He was a Duke fan in basketball and a Nebraska Cornhusker fan in football. He had eclectic taste in music. He liked everything from classical to zydeco. He didn't attend church but lived by Christian principles of charity and doing for others. There will be many things he will miss that he was looking forward to. He won't be able to give his son the engagement party he wanted. He won't attend his wedding. He'll never see his grandchildren. HE WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO SHOWED THE FIREMEN WHERE TO GO. HIS LAST KNOWN LOCATION WAS AT FIRE COMMAND 2 WORKING WITH THE BATTALION CHIEF TO GET THE PEOPLE OUT. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT 20 CIVILIANS WERE DOING THE SAME JOB AS THE FDNY, PDNY AND PAPD. THEY KNEW THE BUILDINGS BETTER THAN ANYONE AND NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT THEM. EDWARD T. STRAUSS IS A MAJOR HERO AND HE DIDN'T HAVE TO DIE FOR HIS FAMILY TO KNOW THAT. When you read this tribute and the Portraits of Grief and you see "worked for the World Trade Department", please remember these men went into the buildings to save lives. Its not only firemen and policemen who died in the line of duty.
