Edward Geraghty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
'His Talent Was His Mind'

Several years ago, Battalion Chief Edward F. Geraghty was put in charge of the Fire Department's training school on Randall's Island. On his first day, he gave the new recruits a pep talk, telling them what he expected. After he was done, he turned around to find the school's instructors staring strangely at him. "What did I do wrong?" he asked. One replied, "You're not supposed to be nice, you're supposed to scare the hell out of them."

That would have been difficult for Chief Geraghty, said his wife, Mary. "I was married to Eddie for 17 years and I saw him in a bad mood twice." Even last year, when her father became terminally ill and had to move in with them, when they found out their middle son, James, 12, had juvenile diabetes and when they had a fire in their house that displaced them for several weeks, he kept an optimistic outlook and his sense of humor. She said, "He would always say, `Life doesn't get any better than this.' "

Chief Geraghty, 45, oversaw five firehouses on Manhattan's West Side, all of which responded to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

Mrs. Geraghty used to go downstairs every morning and find her husband already reading and studying. "His talent was his mind," she said. Now, when she rises, she sits at the bottom of the stairs as the sun comes up with a picture of him and tells him, "Good morning."

I grew up with Eddie from when we could crawl till 6th grade. I know his family well and wish them all the best. I was just stumbling around looking up friends from back when and I had heard about Eddie but wasn't sure. I guess these phones now offer quite a bit of information and yeah if that sounds like I'm old school it's cuz I am. REST EASY EDDIE. Regards to Ed and Norma, Lynn, Janet, Steve, Maureen, Timmy, and Colleen. Sorry so late. Happy memories. Lawrence Stephen Dgezits

After 911, I received a dog tag with Edward Geraghty, in memory of his life. I still have that and am honored to wear it each September in his memory. You are gone but not forgotten. Memories from Chincoteague, Virginia

Hello to Mary and Edward's family,
I live in East Rockaway and my name is Patricia Geraghty Forte. I happened to see a Rockville Centre Edition of the Herald and read about your husband Edward. It caught my eye naturally because I am a Geraghty. My Dad, Joseph Geraghty who passed away in 2008 at the age of 89 was an NYFD firefighter as a young man and he grew up in Flushing and then Bayville. Your husband has the same cleft in his chin as my Dad, brother and many Geraghty relatives. It's a small world. My husband grew up in Valley Stream on Rockaway Parkway. God Bless your family. Dear Geraghty family I got the honor of stair climbing at Red Rocks (Colo) in your husbands/ fathers/ brothers memory. What an amazing beautiful man he was. Obviously he was truly loved and dearly missed. God bless you all. I'm certain that he is watching over you all and he will live in your hearts forever! A true hero he is

Colin and Connor, I was thinking about the time I met you playing golf at Disney in Orlando, I think this was in 2008. When you told myself and Carl the Houston officer who you were my heart got real heavy. Your father would be proud of you two on how you handle yourselves. One day my wife and I will visit the memorial to pay tribute to your father. I just wish you 2 the best in life.

Hello Geraghty Family, my name is Nick "Cinco" Fenley Jr. I am an Agent with the U.S. Border Patrol in Imperial Valley, California. I had the honor of "carrying" Edward with me during the inaugural 911 memorial stair climb on 09/13/14. I am deeply sorry for your loss, although we will probably never meet, I wanted to tell you that I was honored to carry Edward's photo with me during the event. From everything I have read, Ed seemed like an amazing man, character that was above reproach.

I was watching a documentary on 9/11 and the person speaking was in front of a wall of photos of fallen firefighters. I saw Ed's name and photo. I waited tables with Ed at the RL in NHP in the mid to late "70's". Many of us "hung out" together at that time. Most of us eventually went on to school and other professions. I had the good fortune of running into Ed in a hospital hallway when I worked @ St. Vincent's Hospital in NY in the mid "'80's". He and a fellow firefighter were going to have "lung tests" to see if they could qualify for the diving division of the NYFD. He was always so happy. Ed had a lot of class...always willing to help colleagues and friends. Sorry to see he is gone. I am certain he is still the "goodwill ambassador" I knew him to be. God bless him, and you his family.

April 29, 2014

Hello. My name is Faith, I'm thirteen, and from Maryland. First of all, my heart goes out to everyone who knew Edward. I am going on the trip in May with my class to NY. Each of us were given a name of a firefighter to research, and your husband/brother/son/father is mine. I have just finished reading all of the entries about Edward, and I am deeply sorry for your loss. I wish I had known him, for he seems like a very sincere, kind, amazing man. I am very grateful for what he did during his life, especially on 9/11. If you could give me any information about Edward, that would mean the world to me. If you would like to help me by giving me information/stories/etc about him, please email me at [email protected]. Thank you for your help, and thank you, Edward, for being an extraordinary person.

April 14, 2014

Good Afternoon to the Geraghty Family,
First of all I'm truly sorry it has taken me so long to make some comments in honor of Eddie.
I went to school with Ed both at St. Boniface and for 2 years at Holy Cross and considered him as one of my closest friends growing up. We shared many great times with some of the following highlights:
Keeping the nuns at St. Boniface on their toes at all times.
Attending a few parties at his house in Valley Stream.
Sharing a mini bike we bought together.
Playing Big League Baseball against each other while playing basketball together on Saturday mornings at Holy Cross.
Going to a few St. Patty's Day parades in the city.
Getting into trouble at Holy Cross H.S. back in the day....

I will always remember Eddie Geraghty and I'm extremely sorry he left us way too soon.

Sincerely,
Steve Heckler (Trinity, Florida)

I keep it hanging on the wall, so that he will never be forgotten. I hope his family is doing well.

I am a 65 year old retired lady but I still actively run a Charterboat in Chincoteague. I bring people on nature tours. If anyone in the Geraghty family visits our Island, I would be honored to take you on a Cruise in his memory. Feel free to visit our webpage www.chincoteaguecharters.com

My Dearest Eddie,
I can not believe that 11 years have passed since I have heard your voice or looked into your beautiful green eyes.
Our beautiful boys have grown into strong, kind, loving men. Words could not express the pride and love I feel for them. They are you times three.
There is so much I want to say but you already know what is in me heart.
There has not been a single day that you have not been a part of these past eleven years. You are our beautiful angel.

Dear Geraghty family, I was aware that Ed gave all on 9/11/01. I knew Ed from the gym (Valencia) where I worked. The gym had many FF and NYPD working out there. A retired FF called us up to tell us who was missing. If Ed made it there in the morning he would see some of his FF friends. They would tell jokes all morning , and pick on each other. I am sorry I have not had a chance to leave a message b4. Be proud and I will never forget how much he gave.

Dear Geraghty Family,
It wasn't until much after September 11th did I come to find Eddie's name. I went to St. Boniface with him in Elmont. Oh the good times we had. He was such a wonderful person with a special sparkle in his eyes. Even back then and at such a young age he was always there for you. What I find very sad is the fact that I've lived in Baldwin for 30 years and never knew he was just a couple of blocks away.

Hi Connor!

I am sorry that your Dad had to go that day! I can only imagine all the people he unselfishly helped save and are still among us because of him! You must be so very proud and at the same time, miss him like crazy and wish it was all a bad dream! (I lost my son in a car accident when he was 21 and it still hurts).

I received an email today with your original message and was curious to know if you are still working on your petition!

What you are doing is a beautiful and valid idea! If you are still collecting names for your petition or need help with a different project, please let me know!

Thank you for sharing your Dad with us! God bless you and your beautiful family, always!

My grandfather, Frank Pfeifer was your uncle. He loved you so much, and talked of you and your brothers Steve and Timmy often. He would have been devastated to know that you lost your life on 9/11/01, but he passed away in 1998. My family honors you, and remembers you. May God continue to Bless your devoted wife Mary, and your children. I remember as a child going to many Geraghty gatherings, and seeing you and the rest of your family. God Bless your entire family.

As I sit here on 9/11/07 listening to the TV of the names of all those lost on this day, I can't help but remember seeing you just a week or so prior at your sister's 50th birthday party on the boat. I had not seen you in years. Our families were inter-twined -- The Geraghty's and the Bowlers, so much in common -- and the rainy vacation our families shared back in '69 at Brown's Bungalows. We went through St. Boniface and remained friends through our families. You had a calmness about you on that day on the boat and we chatted about our lives. You said that your wife could not accompany you on that day because you son we recovering from surgery. You were admired and loved by anyone who met you. You will always be sorely missed by your family and friends. God Bless You Eddie.

Happy Birthday My Dear Brother. I miss you so very much each and every day. After 3 years I still can't believe you are gone. So many times I want to pick up the phone and call you just to hear your voice.

Mommy and Daddy are hurting so bad too Eddie, they keep waiting for you to walk through their front door. Mommy can still see you sitting on the back patio talking to her in the kitchen. It just breaks my heart to hear her tell that story.

I know that you are in a much better place and I am being selfish by telling you I WANT YOU BACK HERE WITH ME!!!

To Mrs. Geraghty and Family,

I never knew your husband/father, But i believe he and all the firemen/police/port authority/ems were, are and always will be heros. I pray for Mr. Edward Geraghty often for I feel some kind of connection. I'm not sure if it is because of the last name, or because I am a voulnteer at my firehouse in Elmont, or even because my cousin works at NYPD and is tring to get into FDNY. whatever the reason is. He seemed like a wonderful man and he was/is a true hero. May God bless you, your family and Edward. I will continue to pray for him and all the victims of 9-11-01 always.

Sincerly Yours,

Ed and I were buddies at Holy Cross.I ran into him on and off over the years while I was working as a Postal Police Officer. I used to work across the street from the WTC at the Church Street Station Post Office. I was deeply saddened to learn of his loss today. He was a great guy in High School, and I saw the way his men respected and admired him at work. We lost a fine man that day, I will pray for him and all of you. Remain strong, he will be in our hearts forever.

Even though you didn't know me, I can say that you are a HERO! What you gave of yourself was the ultimate gift! I live many miles away from New York, but I come into contact with many firemen, police, and emergency personel daily as I work in Cartersville, Georgia at Walmart. I work in the Sporting Goods Dept. On September 11, 2002 I couldn't keep my eyes off the t.v. sets hanging around my department! I had several firemen come into the dept. while the ceremony was taking place. I asked the Fireman if I could give him a hug! I felt like it was a small gift! Conner I gladly signed your E-mail about getting a Day to honor your father! I wish you nothing but overwelming success! I am sure that your father is so very proud of you and your family as I have read all the guest pages, it comes clear that Eddie was a great friend, comrad, but not least a Great Father and Husband! If I could reach up to New York I would like to give you all a great big HUG! If there is every anything I can do for you all, please contact me anytime! With my Deepest condolences,

To: Norma, Jim, Maureen, Colleen, Lynn, Janet, Steve & Tim,

I recall standing in a smokey stairwell of the North Tower, wondering if I was ever going to see my family again when we finally were redirected to the 12th floor, and to a stairway with no smoke in it..by a NYC firefighter. At that moment, I thought of the Geraghty's. I spent my teenage life with all of you, and whenever I see firefighters, I think of my years with Moe and all of you. Bowling teams, boating trips...all were special times in my life....Ed let me play 3rd base in the bar league.

I know that you are all heartbroken, but I also know that your family is one of those special families. I know that you will stay strong. I just wanted to send my love to all of you, and wish you all the best on this 1 year annivesary.

I also received Connor's email petition for a National Firefighter's Day and was glad to add my name to the list. What a touching tribute from a loving son. God bless and comfort your family and friends.

To the Geraghty Family,

I knew Eddy back in the '70's when I was living in Valley Stream and a friend of Maureen's. I wasn't close with Eddy, but I can tell he was a decent man who loved his family.

I was at 4 WTC on 9/11 and experienced horror like I never did before. To later find out about Eddy made me very sad. But I realized that he was a special person, and that it was his nature to do all he can to help those who were trapped in those towers.

God bless him, and may God bless you.

Maureen, please email at [email protected].

Dear Geraghty Family,

I attended Holy Cross High School with Ed and although I did not know him well, I can remember a conversation here and there that we had as classmates, and the one thing I recall is that he was always smiling. He seemed to be a happy, fun loving guy. I was surprised to learn that several firefighters who lost their lives on September 11th were graduates of Holy Cross. I keep your family in my prayers and pray that God will continue to give you the strength to deal with this tremendous loss with the hope that one day you will be reunited. God bless you.

To the Geraghty family: I received Connor's petition today, July 19th, and was happy to sign and pass along. I hope the dream of a National Firefighter's Day becomes a reality. My father (RIP) was an SF firefighter and my brother is currently an SF firefighter. I know the sacrifices that are made daily by them. However, you and Chief Geraghty have made the ultimate sacrifice. May GOD Bless you and all of the other heroes.

I know you're hurting but I'm sure this is what Ed would say to you if he could-

WHEN I MUST LEAVE YOU

When I must leave you for a little while - please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile; and for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; and never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky. Helen Steiner Rice

We are here for you always and we shall never forget.

Hello Connor,

I have just received your petition for Fire Fighter Day and I would like to
be one of the first people to say how much we feel your pain here in the
Fire Dept. Though I never knew your father I lost a brother in arms that day
along with a lot of others. I have had some hard times dealing with all that
had come along that day on Sept 11th and it has been tough knowing so many
were lost in the blink of an eye that horrible day in sept. That was until
today at 156 pm central time I received your email and I have to say it
really warmed my heart to know that a boy so young could have a heart so big
as to think of others in his time of grief. Connor I know in my heart that
your father is very proud as are we for your selfless act of kindness. It's
hearts like yours Connor that make it so easy to give all that we have to
what we do here in the fire dept. Being a father of three wonderful children
I hope and pray I do as good a job with them as your father has done with
you. You are in our hearts and our prayers always Connor and tonight I will
hug my family extra close and let them know that their dad loves them very
much and tonight when they say their prayers they will say a special prayer
for a boy with a heart as big as a nation.

With pride and honor to you son for you are what makes our country strong.

I just received an email chain letter from Conner requesting signatures for a Fire Fighter's day. I wish you sucess in getting the recognition for your father and fellow Fire Fighters. Just remember with or without this special day for the Fire fighters there will always be the support of all military and civilian men, women, and family member serving overseas. Our thoughts and prays are with the Geraghty family and fellow Fire fighters and their families.

Eddie,

I did not know you personally but knew about you through your sister Colleen. I pray that you are in the presence of God and that His love and joy fill you for all of eternity. I also pray that your family will turn to Him in their times of sorrow and pain. Only He can provide them with the comfort they need.

I want to thank you for being a fireman. Only a few people would consider a profession that requires them to put their own life on the line to save others. You were one of the few, and for that my entire family and I can not thank you enough. The world is a much better place because you were in it.

Thank you again,

Sondra

I will always remember you as Maureen's big brother with that beautiful TransAm. I know that you are in a much better place now and are looking out for us all here on earth. Thank you for making the supreme sacrifice in order to save others and to make our world a better place! And isn't that the real definition of a hero!

Chief,

Thank you for showing us what FDNY is really all about: family, friends, and loving the job. We will always remember our weekends riding with Pride of Midtown. We are honored to have been witness to the great legacy of E54/L4/B9.

You are always in our thoughts and prayers. Watch out for us.

To The Geraghty Family,

Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I signed and passed along the chain email that Connor has started. I received several copies from other friends as well. I am sure you are well past the 250 signatures.

While I did not personally know Chief Geraghty, having read the tributes I know he was a wonderful father, husband and brother. The latter being both in terms of his family and his fellow firemen. My brother Captain Billy Burke (Eng 21) also died on the fateful day. Coincidentally, the Chief's and Billy's memorial services were held on the same day. Interestingly, I believe they must have known each other as Billy worked at the Probie training center for many years.

May all the wonderful memories help ease your pain.
