Christopher Grady Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
Christopher Michael Grady, 39, of Cranford, New Jersey, an employee of Cantor Fitzgerald, was born on August 13, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York. He spent his summers in Breezy Point, New York.

Christopher is survived by his wife, Kelly Grady; his children, Dylan (4) and Kayla (2); his mother, Rita Grady; his siblings, Brendan, Patrick, and Deirdre; and his loyal dog, Motai.

A Memorial Service was held for Christopher on September 27, 2001, at St. Patrick's Church in Brooklyn.
Profile submitted by Patrick Grady.

Compassionate Laugher

Christopher M. Grady's laugh was a full-body production, a gut-wriggling giggle so convulsive that he almost couldn't breathe. So he'd grab his belly, and his head would fling back, nose scrunched, feet flailing. Soon, everyone else in the room was laughing, too.

He drew people in, did Mr. Grady, 39, a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, with his laughter, his boyish high spirits — he'd hide the wallet of a colleague who left work early; would camp out in his van for a coveted tee-off time — and his humble but unshakable loyalty to loved ones. Mr. Grady, who had recently moved with his wife, Kelly, and their two young children to Cranford, N.J., thought of himself as quiet, even shy.

Mr. Grady wasn't fancy: shrimp cocktail and a rib-eye steak, Mets and Jets (though he pitched a batting practice for the Yankees), friends and family. But he had a gentle sense of grace. Once, when a distant, elderly relative suffering from Alzheimer's became agitated and started speaking in her native Spanish, Mr. Grady, who didn't understand the language, sat with her, smiling and nodding sympathetically, until she calmed down. "He was so good to other people," said Mrs. Grady. "I am so proud he chose me as his wife."

Where have 20 years gone. Yesterday was such a sad occasion as are all the anniversaries. I still remember so much about where I was in my life and that heart wrenching email I got from Kelly to tell me that Chris had been lost in the attack. I think of both of you and your family every year at this time. I hope you have found happiness my old friend xx

You will never need to be reminded of the date but know that I was reminded again yesterday of how lucky I am to still have my husband with me and the loss you have had to live with since 2001. You are often in my thoughts but especially at this time of year.
Always your friend

Hello Kelly,
You don't know me. I knew Chris. When we were kids, our families hung out so much we referred to each other as cousins. On September 11, 1967 I spent the day with him playing at his house because I had been sent there for the day while my Mom had a baby, my sister Christine. I was a serious tomboy and Christopher (as I knew him) was my baseball-playing buddy. He treated me like one of the guys which was the best thing in the world to me. I think of you and your family every year and how lucky I was to have been his friend as a little kid. I hope you and your family are doing as well as you can on this anniversary. Warmly, Sandy Cioffi

My deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Grady's family. I didn't know him, but I have read all the notes that have been posted about him. I became interested in learning about Mr. Grady, because my family is currently fostering a dog through the Dept. of Homeland Security that was named in his honor. This lab named Grady, is being trained to hopefully one day work in the airports of this country to help protect all of us. It was nice to read that Mr. Grady had a dog that he loved.

Chris was a very good friend of mine in Bay Ridge - we both lived on Battery Avenue. We lost touch after my family moved away to NJ in 1975 - but I never forgot him. It's nice to see, based on everyone's comments about him in the guestbook, that he really didn't change, and that the qualities that made him a good friend remained in him as an adult.

9-11-03 - 3,412 American flags were flown in a Tribute Field in Lubbock,TX. Each flag represented an individual who lost his or her life 9-1-01. The flag that was flown for Christopher Michael Grady is the one I purchased. Your family will now be in my prayers by name.

Chris was the quarterback of our touch football team in the early 90's. Even though we had lost touch, I remember Chris as an extraordinary athlete who had the fire of competition in his eyes. He was also a good man who kept his word. He played every down like it was his last. My heart goes out to his family. I will miss him.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
