Thomas Moody Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
Fire Officer and Engineer
Captain Thomas Moody loved to give people "the elbow." He would be telling a joke, kidding someone, and if they didn't get it right away, "he would give you the elbow in the ribs," said his wife, Maureen. "He loved to tease."

Captain Moody also had a certain way with names. His daughter Deirdre's first-grade teacher, Mrs. Fear, became Mrs. Afraid. Mr. McDonald became Mr. Arby's. And when he was growing up in Brentwood, on Long Island, his younger sister, Lorraine, became "the secret helper.'' "Whenever he wanted to get my sister to do something, he'd call her his secret helper, and he would con her into doing these little favors for him," recalled Frank Moody, an older brother.

But for all his teasing, and (literal) ribbing, Captain Moody, 45, was quiet at heart. An 18-year veteran of the Fire Department, he was working to be transferred to the hazardous materials team, so he could make full use of his degree in chemical engineering; he started his career as a chemical engineer. He still got consulting work as an engineer, but his adventurous side was most fulfilled working in the Fire Department. "He was in probie school when we met," said Mrs. Moody. "He was so excited about it, so content."

Tommy was one of my best friends through undergrad years at UB. I remember fondly so many wonderful times with Tommy - classes together, studying, drinking, playing frisbee. He had a contagious laugh and a welcoming way about him. I lost a great friend that day.

To all my family members, colleagues, students, dear friends and friends I've yet to meet, thank you for thoughtful comments and remembrances. Rest assured they are comforting and appreciated.

Let us never forget the victims of this tragedy and those who had to carry on without them.

Dear Capt. Moody,
Your brother Mike was my substitute teacher for most of my childhood. It was inspiring to see how he still loves his brother and how you still live on in him. I pray for your wife and children and family, and I thank you for paying the ultimate price for your country.

To the family of Capt. Tom C. Moody, I have been in the fire service for over 40 years. After the 9/11 tragedy many of us at the fire station bought the bracelets honoring the brave FDNY firemen who were lost that day. I have a bracelet with Capt. Tom C Moody name on it. I have worn it hundreds of times and feel like he is a part of my life. I have read so much about him that I'm sure he was a great man, father and husband. I feel honored to wear his name.

To the Family of Capt Thomas MOODY.

My name is Franck-Olivier RIPOLL, I am french. I visited the 9/11 memorial last year, for the new year'eve.
I took a photo of the memorial, and by hazard, the name taken was his name.
So, I wanted to give to all his family all the positive things my family can give to, through these words in a "not perfect english"...

It was an honor to participate in the 3rd annual stair climb in Charlotte, NC on Sept. 7th. Of the 343 firefighters that climbed that day I had the privilege of wearing the name badge of Capt. Moody. I tried to put myself in his shoes that day and think about what he went through. No one can truly comprehend that experience unless they were there and I thank him and all the other members of the New York city Fire Dept. for their sacrifice. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this time. He will never be forgotten. Brad Duncan Engineer E-40 Charlotte Fire Dept.

Tom attended SUNY Buffalo with me and several others who were in chemical Engineering. After school Tom moved down to Groves, Texas working at the Texaco Research Facility. Tom was always an easy going person who enjoyed his friends.

When Tom moved out to Long Beach I had the opportunity to visit him. We enjoyed visiting the comedy clubs and seeing the sites. Years later I learned that Tom may have passed in the 9/11 attack but until know i didnt know the truth.

My sincere condolences to the Moody Family for their loss. Tom was a great colleague and quite the leader as I have read. His memory will live on with all that have known him.

Tom was a great guy. We often studied together in the fire house. One thin I always remember was when we would ask Tommy to multiply 7 or 8 three digit numbers and we would use a calculator and barely beat Tom. When I was a probie Tom was just great. I miss him. Hughie

Yesterday, we proudly mentioned Captain Moody and Family to be remembered during our 9-11 Remembrance with the VFW. Twice this summer, I was fortunate enough to view Memorials which displayed pictures of Captain Moody - one is a Coney Island with the special Memorial near the Cyclones baseball stadium in New York and the other is in Philadelphia at the National Liberty Bell Museums. Both contain bronze memorials with Captain Moody's likeness sculpted so nicely on them. We remember. Christine McPartland Neilson

A Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,
wherever flames may rage.
Give me strength to save some life
whatever be it's age.
Help me to embrace a child
before it is too late,
or save an older person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently to
put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me.
To guard my every neighbor and
protect his property.
And if according to my fate,
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting hand
my children and wife.

To Capt. Moody and all who were lost, you will never be forgotton.

All night I have been thinking about him and your family and felt compelled to write to you. It sounds like your husband and father was an amazing man. I feel so thankful to live in a country filled with heroes like him. His story among many others has greatly inspired me. My thoughts and prayers are with your family today and always. I had the special honor of working with Captain Thomas Moody when he was a Lieutenent in Engine Co. 310. As cliche as this sounds, he was the nicest, friendliest guy you could ever imagine. When I was the "junior man" in the firehouse, Captain Moody was always extremely "open door", always there for me whenever I had any questions, about the job or life in general. His main concern for his men was getting us all home safe at the end of the tour. He loved his job very much, but clearly evident was the tremendous love and affection he had for his wife and four children. I just want them to know, those of us lucky enough to have worked with him, haven't forgotten him and never will, and from that day on will carry our memories of him with us forever in our hearts.

I have been blessed to have three of Capt Moody's children in my Science class and knew the 4th. All great kids. Although I never met Tom, I think of him often being my closest connection to 9/11. It breaks my heart when I see his childrens' empty seat in class every year but the break heals and strengthens whenever I saw his shield hanging on his daughter's necklace.

My students will be coming in soon to begin the day. Another Sept 11, has come. This time it's 2008. Seven years after "Cousin Tommy" gave the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow men and women.

I dated Tom's cousin, Kevin Mason, in California years ago, when we were all barely in our 20's. Tommy was working at Texaco in Long Beach.

Kevin, "Cousin Tommy" and I hung out, went places together, laughed our hineys off, and if you weren't paying attention, Tommy would throw a rib jab with his elbow!

I loved Tom as if he were MY cousin. I keep his picture on my dresser and never forget....Tom was one of the best friends I had and I miss him! I talked to him a couple days before 9-11 and he said his family was planning a vacation with Kevin and his family. Little did I know that would be the last time we'd talk.

Even though I had met his brothers, mom and sister, I never knew Maureen and the kids. But I still pray for you all! God bless you this day and every day!

I watched with pride today as the Fire Department of New York City bestowed The Medals of Honor for the extreme sacrifice that Tom gave for his job and country. I can't believe it's been more than a year as it still feels like yesterday. I can only imagine what you and your family must be feeling on a daily basis. You're doing a wonderful job and we know you'll continue to do so in Tom's absence. Tom will be with you always in your mind, hearts, and in the face and actions of each and every one of his children. I will never forget his quiet kind nature, caring ways, and chats we had over the fence, he was a wonderful person and we'll miss him. There is not a day that has gone by since this terrible tragedy that I have not thought of him and all of you. If ever you are in need of us just come on over, we'll always be there for all of you.
