Adam Rand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
Doing What Came Naturally

Adam Rand always wanted to be a firefighter.

When he graduated from high school, he joined the volunteer fire department in his Bellmore, N.Y., neighborhood. Even after Mr. Rand, 30, became a member of the New York City Fire Department in 1995, he continued to volunteer in Bellmore. For Mr. Rand, fighting fires was a calling.

He reveled in the camaraderie and in learning new techniques that he could teach to younger firefighters.

Mr. Rand's specialty was rescue. On Sept. 11, he joined his fellow members of Squad 288 from Maspeth, Queens, at 2 World Trade Center. He was trying to evacuate people when the building collapsed.

"If he had to die, he died doing something he loved," his mother, Mary Ann Rand, said.

Mrs. Rand said that in addition to his devotion to firefighting, her son lived a life of full appreciation for other activities, like skiing, fishing, hunting and preparing for his forthcoming wedding.

At the firehouse in Bellmore, Mr. Rand will be remembered for his legendary Halloween costumes. He once arrived at the annual party wearing a red wood box. Mr. Rand had cut out a square hole on the back of the box so that his face could be seen. He was supposed to be the missing child on the back of a milk carton.

22 years now. Where does time go? Yet it still seems like yesterday. The memories are burned into my mind. I chose your name as the person who I wanted to be praying for in your memory, for your family and friends. Perhaps in some small way I can make a difference in other people's lives just as you did.

Dear Adam and Family, today marks another tragic anniversary. I didn´t know you, you didn´t know me. I am currently in a Fire Academy and will be following in your foot steps to be a great firefighter, fingers crossed. I can only hope and dream to have exhibited even an ounce of the courage you did on this day 21 years ago. I wish your friends and family hope and joy and all the well wishes possible. Peace be with you all.

Adam --- I was visiting NY for a lacrosse tournament with my son. On fathers days we visited the 911 memorial. My son suggested we take a random picture of a name on the wall at the memorial pool and reseach that individual. We wanted to thank you for your ultimate sacrifice and service you gave on that day. Our prayers are with you and your family. God bless.

I am a fiefighter for spotsylvania county in virginia and I participated in a 9/11 stairclimb memorial where we were given a picture and a name of one of the 343 that gave the ultimate sacrifice that day. I had the honor of carrying Adam's picture with me while we climbed the 110 flights. When we reached the top we rang the firehouse bell and said his name aloud. I keep his picture in my locker to remind myself and my crew of the sacrifice and courage that Adam showed that day. We keep Adam and his family in our thoughts each day we come to work and turnout on runs. Thoughts and payers.

Adam,

I think of you all the time, what a great kid you were as we were growing up, tussling over this or that, so much life in how we played. You made me so proud when you decided to become a firefighter, even prouder as I understood more about the man you had become.

I've been proud to teach my boys, Cole Adam and Kyle Adam, about their Uncle, the spirit in which he lived his life and the sacrifice he made in the service of others. Thank you,

God bless you and may you rest in peace.

It had been years since you were playing your guitar in the basement of my childhood home. I always remember how sweet you were to me. The last time I saw you was the day you graduated from the fire academy. You were so happy with your unforgetable smile. You asked me how my brother was doing. If it is possible, please watch over him. I know he thinks of you often(his 1st guitar player).

Adam-
I can not believe it has been 7 years. We missed you at the annual trip to eastern Long Island. I remember how all the children were mesmerized by your scary stories. well they are not little kids any more, more like teenagers. You would be proud of each of them. some take after you in song while others in words. We also miss your dad and his sarcastic words. Hopefully you both were laughing with all of us.
You would be very proud of your sister she is in the top of her class in school. And looking foward to being the "best teacher ever!"
I wear your pin every 9-11 and it guides me on a daily basis in my car. I feel that you are my guardian angel and because of you I never get lost.
I am lucky to have known you from childhood to adulthood.
Fond memories are:
-The time you made a diorama Nuclear Power Plant for your sister.
-Greenpoint, swimming your sister and I to safety in the tubes in the channel.
I love being part of the family.
This years summer quote is:
"As the big red ball sets we sleep... when rise we must hunt."
Love ya always-
Robin

Adam,
I used to go to Mill Pond and have a cigar on the bench and remember you. Because that’s where you hung out and lived so close too. But it was getting renovated so I stopped going there and that’s when I discovered the Memorial at the North Bellmore Library and the Eisenhower Park Memorial - and yes, I’d sit and have a cigar while I thought of you. And now, today, I searched online to find this site, to write you this Hello and to say that I think about you a lot and that I am proud to have known you and I won’t ever forget you. Rest in peace my friend.

September 11, 2008

We went to Elementary, Junior High and High School together. I didn't know you well but I knew that you were a nice guy who had a happy disposition. I know that you were a firefighter and that you ran into Tower 2 when everyone else ran out. You made a huge sacrifice to try to save the lives of innocent people. I know this was your job as a firefighter. It is still inconceivable that someone would plan and execute this type of attack on innocent people. Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice. You will not be forgotten.

March 11, 2004

I knew Adam and his family for many years. I got to experience Adam's unbelievable humor and how he could make you smile no matter what was going on in your life. My favorite memory was when we took the boat out and got stuck in a rain storm way out at sea, with the rain pelting us in the face. I was so scared but of course Adam made it the most wonderful experience. He always had a way of doing that. Words can not describe what a loss Adam's death is to this world, and how incredible a family he has. You are all in my prayers forever.Thank you for making me a part of your family for all those years. May you rest in peace Adam and watch over your freinds and family.

I did not know Adam, but at school, we made a paper chain with all of the names of the people who died in the WTC attacks, and you could buy a link of the chain for a dollar, trying to raise $3000 for the Widows fund. Adam was the person on my link. He sounds like he was a great guy. I'm glad you have this tribute. God Bless America. ~Austin
