Growing Up Right

Maybe there was something in the water.

For some reason, perhaps a dozen men who came of age during the 1970's and 80's in Deer Park, N.Y., developed an appetite for civic duty. They became New York City police officers and firefighters in their professional lives, and volunteer firefighters with Engine Company No. 2 in Deer Park in their personal ones. They called it the Deer Park Connection, and Firefighter John Vigiano and Detective Joseph Vigiano, two of the tightest brothers you could ever find, were among the best-liked and most accomplished members.

Both followed the unwritten manual on growing up right in Deer Park, said their father, John Vigiano, a retired captain in the New York City Fire Department. They were active in sports. They became Eagle Scouts. They hatched pranks that were wicked in their creativity but gentle in their impact. "They never embarrassed me," said Captain Vigiano. "They were good fathers, good husbands and they were good men.

John Vigiano, at 36, was older by two years, though his brother never let him forget that he was also four inches shorter and maybe 30 pounds lighter, too. John was the quieter of the two, and spent as much time as possible with his two young daughters, his father said. He was a terrific hockey player (and rabid Rangers fan) and he would occasionally rent out an entire rink for his family, his brother's family and a few other friends.

Joseph Vigiano, who was known as Joey, loved to mug for the cameras and played lacrosse on the Police Department team, said his wife, Kathy, a fellow police officer. On the job, he was commended for his bravery: he survived being shot on three different occasions. At home, he taught his two boys how to build derby cars of pine. Eventually, he was going to do the same with his youngest son, now 6 months old.

For now, the Vigianos are collecting anecdotes and tributes from friends and relatives on a new Web site, www.vigiano.com. Here, presumably, is one of the last stories: On the Sunday before Sept. 11, Kathy Vigiano returned home after the first game of the season in her soccer league, bruised and tired. She was prepared to make dinner, but instead, she saw that her husband had fixed prime rib, Caesar salad, mashed potatoes, and broccoli with cheese — while watching their baby, too. All this from a guy who had previously insisted that he only knew how to make spaghetti sauce.

To a true All - American family. I can't begin to tell you how much I admire the Vigiano family and all they have done and all they have stood for. I played hockey with John with the "bandits" for a couple of seasons. Although I knew nobody on the team John went out of his way to make me feel comfortable and welcomed on the team. John was extremely selfless and a great person all around. I feel honored to have known him. To John senior, Semper Fi my brother. God speed and may God bless you and your family all the days of your life.

Dear Vigiano Family,
I saw Joseph’s picture while reading about 9/11 victims. Words can never express what your family has endured in the past decade. When I read of your families loss of two sons I wanted to learn more. They were remarkable men; "Thank you" for raising two admirable & honourable sons.

Mr. Vigiano and Family, Thinking of you as John's birthday approaches. I recently discovered the Find a Grave website, where I found a picture of his stone. That's how I know that he would have turned 44 on December 8. By Googling your name, I recently discovered two websites that contain your photo and recordings of you reminiscing about John and Joe. One is the New York Times tribute for the first anniversary of 9/11 and the other is a site of oral histories. Also, on You Tube, I found the Connie Chung program on which you appeared. As always, my heartfelt thanks for so candidly sharing your memories--and for giving me this opportunity to say, "I care."

Vigiano Family-
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all today, Sept. 11, 2008. Although I never knew John and Joe, meeting their father left a lasting impression on me as he stood strong, and comforted the men in pain around him. I'll never forget how he made a point to speak personally to each fireman that had come to see him. I don't know what he said to each, but it was obvious that he was doing the reassuring. God bless you family and may He always protect you.

To Mr.& Mrs.V as I knew you as. My deepest sorrow is shared with you day after day as I remember the wounderful Son's you raised into fine Men. I have a collection of Memorial tattoos that I have been getting to Honor Joey & John on my right leg between my knee and ankle. I would love to share some pictures of them with you once I get some good ones made. I will never forget them, and you both will always be in my prayers. I think about times we all shared growing up together in the Boy Scouts and it makes me smile. Remembering the songs we used to sing about John as we marched to the mess hall. We had to joke with him he was our SPL. I can remember finding Joey's High School ring in a wooded lot and returning it back to him as he begged my not to tell you( Mr.& Mrs.V.) were i found it. It's little things like that ,that keep they're spirits alive. I hope I made you smile by sharing some of my memories. May God Bless You Both! I will forever treasure the time and memories I had and have of them.
Sincerely,

Dearest Vigiano Family ...

Today I have read that John & Joe's father made a trip to encourage the troops in Iraq.

I am just overcome at the generosity of soul to have done that. But, then, I suppose it is indicative of a family that would nurture sons who would become heroes as well.

To all of you ... I simply want to say there isn't a time a firetruck passes that I am not filled with tears at the contemplation of what men like John & Joe did on 9/11.

Their example of sacrifice -- and your example in undertaking hardship to reach out to others a world away from home -- continues to empower me with commitment to aspire to selflessness, in large and small measure.

God bless you all and each one. You are in my prayers.

Maria,

You might not remember me, but my son Danny went to pre-school with your daughter Nicolette-he loved her! They even talked about getting married--at 4/5 years old! When Mrs. Massi told me about your losses, my heart broke for you. I remember being at the class picnic at Belmont Park earlier that year and thinking to myself how great it was to see a dad show up (your husband) and what a nice, loving family you had.

I passed by the memorial of the streets for John (by Grand Blvd.) and Joseph today and did not want to let another day go without telling you that I think of you and your girls often and you and your entire family are still in our prayers. God Bless you all.

I rode my motorcycle (along with over 7,200 other motorcycles) in the 9/11 Partiot Day Parade to honor those lost on 9/11. I had the honor of wearing a wristband with John's name and riding in memory of John. This took on special significance to me since my father was a full-time firefighter in New York, and my son is a full-time firefighter in Prescott. It is just too bad that so many good lives were lost in order to bring the spirit of patriotism which is so pervasive in our Country now. My love, prayers and sympathy go to the Vigiano family, and to the families of all of the brave firefighters, police and EMS personnel who lost their lives in service of their city and country. These -- and the public safety personnel throughout the Country who put their lives on the line every day -- are the true unsung heroes of this Country, and should be honored not just on 9/11, but every day.

Dear Vigiano Family:

I saw you and your wife on television a little while after 9/11 and my heart broke for you. I will not even attempt to tell you that I know how you feel, because I can only imagine, and that thought is unbearable to me.

I am a mother of two young boys, a 5 year old and a 1 year old (he was born 12 days before this horrible tragedy), and as a mother of two boys I can't help but relate to you even though my children are younger. I only hope my boys grow up as close and as loving towards each other and you raised your sons to be. My five year old tells me he wants to be a policeman when he grows up, this warms my heart but at the same time sends a chill up my spine considering the way the world is today. I pray that God watches over your family as I know he is watching over your boys. No one should have to go through the heartache that you have experienced. I wish you all of God's blessings from now on and know that you are in people's thoughts and prayers. You are definely in mine, and will never be forgotten.

I received a white wooden cross with John's name on it at a candle light vigil for all the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. I looked for one with a firefighter's name on it as I, too, am a firefighter. I never had the chance to meet John, but I know he was a great guy. I will continue to think and pray for him. I am also carrying his name inside my fire helmet, so that from this day forward I will carry on the traditions of the fire service and the job we do in his honor.

God Bless John, his brother Joe, and all of the Vigiano family.

To the Vigiano Family, words can not express how sorry we are for your loss of both your sons. From my family to yours and a mother of 2 small sons, I only hope my children grow up to be as close friends, brave and caring as both of your sons were. So far, they are best friends. Althogh I did not know anyone that perished on September 11th, I still felt extreme pain and loss for the famililes who did know someone who died. About 3 months ago I purchased a bracelet from American Heros Fund. The name printed on the bracelet was that of John T. Vigiano II. On the inside it says that he is an American Hero- and I believe that he truly was. Whoever had the gift of knowing this man, I believe, is truly blessed. Thank You for saving so many lives John.

I am writing, to express my deepest sympathies, on this, the 6th month anniversary of September 11. Though I did not know anyone personally, that lost their lives that day, all of them along with their families,

are remembered in my nightly prayers. I came to this page, to try and find something about John Vigiano. In rememberance of John, I am wearing a bracelet, that I ordered from the Amercian Heroes, that sent me a bracelet with Johns name on it. There was a card inserted that in part reads "The name on this bracelet belongs to a true American hero" I wear this bracelet in memory of John, with pride. My

love and prayers go out to Johns family. With this site, I now have a face of this American hero. May God keep John, his brother Joey and all the other heroes of September 11,close to his heart, as I am sure his family and friends will. I know I will.

Dear John,

We all knew that it takes a brave, caring person to become a firefighter and now in the wake of September 11, we are all painfully aware that it also takes a hero to put his life on the line to save others he doesn't even know.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the loved ones you left behind.

May you rest in peace with God in Heaven because I believe that is where heroes go when they leave this earth to become Angels.

I also believe every Angel has a special star that is all their own and in the darkest of night I look toward the Heavens and wonder which star is yours!

I never had the pleasure to meet you, but I wanted to express my sympathy to you and to the loved ones, friends, and fellow firefighters who lost their lives and those who survived.

God Bless you all!

What a wonderful caring heart John must have had to dedicate his life to helping others. We are so sorry for you loss. Our hearts are so shattered along with yours.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
