Oleh Wengerchuk Obituary

Soul Mates From Age 2
Oleh Wengerchuk and his wife, Oksana, met as children, when their families were interred at a German displacement camp when they were toddlers. Their families were Ukrainian. "I don't remember him from that time," Mrs. Wengerchuk said. "My mother used to tell me that we would play together all the time, he and his brother and I. We were like the three musketeers. We were only 2 or 3 years old."

Through the years, and in the turmoil after the war, the two families kept in touch. Hers ended up in South Bend, Ind., while his immigrated to New York a year later. When her father died, her family moved to Trenton, N.J., and they visited the Wengerchuks. Oleh Wengerchuk was in the Army. "We fell in love, which wasn't planned," Mrs. Wengerchuk said. "We had a long history. We were like soul mates."

Fast-forward to the year 2001. He was a transportation designer for the Washington Group International, with an office on the 91st floor of 2 World Trade Center. The couple had a nice home in Centerpoint, N.Y., on Long Island. They loved to entertain.

One of Mr. Wengerchuk's passions was going sailing with his brother. The Wengerchuks had a daughter, Andrea, who is 23, and just out of college. She had come home to live with her parents again; father and daughter were forging an adult friendship.

The weekend before Sept. 11, the couple had friends over for dinner. At the end, as they sat in the twilight, Mr. Wengerchuk, 56, took his wife's hand and kissed it, as he often did after these nights of wine and good conversation. "He told me, 'I just want you to know how much I appreciate everything you do for me. If one of us has to go first, I hope it's me because I can't imagine life without you.' "

Oksana - Greetings from South Bend. In trying to find classmates from our Central '64 class, I found the obit for your late husband, Oleh. We had no idea that he died in the 9/11 attacks at the WTC until recently. Our condolences to your family. Mr dad, Stephen died in '91 while on vacation in Greece, while my mother Virginia died of cancer in 1985. I have had a lot of classmates ask about you. We did mail a reunion letter to you at the Centerport, NY address. We would love to have you come back to South Bend this June for our 50th class reunion. We are still in the phone book, please call us. A lot of classmates have asked about you.

Oleh, my dear and unforgetable friend. I, as your family and all your friends and acquaintances, was devastaed on the news that you were a victim of the horrible attack on America that occurred ont that beautiful September morning of 2001. I will never forget the great times we had growing up as children in New York. Your vistis to my house with Ostap on 14th street and mine to your home on 5th. I will always remember details of our conversations at St. George's School and during play. I will forever remember your cheery personality, your smile, your uplifting presence when we attended Pace College together and the fun we had as members of the fencing team. We shared a close comaraderie as brothers of the Plast fraternity "???? ????????". I and my wife, Marta, had one enjoyable opportunity to meet you and your lovely wife, Oksana, at the entrance to the Main House at Soyuzivka shorty after my return from medical school in 1974. Who would have suspected at that time that unimaginable cruelty would separate us forever. I think of you often, my freind. I pray for you and the comfort of your family on every September 11th and will continue to do so until I die. I probably have not seen Ostap since we graduated from grade school. I remember your mother as a kind person. I'm sorry that I never really got to know your wife or daugter. I can just imagine the pain that they are enduring having lost the spectacular person that you were. May God bless them and help them through their loss. And to you my dearest friend, I will see you again in the world that you are now in and we shall reminisce about the old times. Till then, I love you brother. Keep watching over your family and those friends that you left behind so prematurely.

YOUR FLAME WILL ALWAY BURN IN MY HEART DEAR OLEH

March 26, 2011

I was the last one to see him alive. Every morning he would come to work and take everything out of his briefcase and accurately put everything in his desk. Before leaving, he would take everything out of his desk and to put into his briefcase. As we were told to evacuate, he started putting his stuff into his briefcase. I said to him as I was passing, that we have to go. He smiled and said that he was coming.
For three days, I was praying that he would be found, that there might be an airpocket someplace and that he would be safe. On Thursday, when it rained, I knew that would not be the case.
When I see his name on drawings he worked on, tears come.
He was a great person to work with, very organized, good listener, good advice giver, always in a good mood,
good friend and co-worker.

As I sit here today at work, listening to the radio, I think of the Wengerchuks. I think of the times spent with them, and how much I enjoyed being around their family. Oleh was such a wonderful, good-hearted person that made the times spent very memorable. My heart goes out to Oksana and Andrea, two of the sweetest people I have ever met. God bless you.

I would like to take this moment to thank god for granting me the oppurtunity to meet and get to know Mr. Oleh Wengerchuk. In attending college with his beautiful daughter I began to meet and get to know him. After a few meetings and then a few meals at their picturesque Long Island home I began to see how much he deeply loved his family. I have been dating his daughter for a few years now and you can tell that a great man was behind this diamond in the rough. Behind every great child is an even greater set of parents. THis could not be exemplified any greater than it is in this family. I will always remember his great sense of humor and hope that one day I can provide for my family like he did for his. I am forever grateful. So thank you. THank you for the times you had me over and welcomed me as if I were your own, it really meant alot to me. I just hope that one day when it is my time, I will be remembered as greatly as everyone speaks of you and remembers you. I think about what happened alot and I always wonder how they are getting through these times. But I know that this family will get through this tragedy because of their internal strength and love for one another. May god bless this family forever, they deserve it after what they have been through. Love and gratitude forever,,, Kevin McGrath......

At this difficult time my family and I would like to convey its sincerest condolences to all of you. I am extremely sorry for your loss.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
