Robert Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2001.
A Bob for All Seasons

In his 23 years, Bobby Hughes earned a number of nicknames. His friends called him Party Bob, because he enjoyed his time away from the office. When he bought a new car, his family called him Lexus Bob.

As a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Mr. Hughes would go to Shea Stadium with his father, grandfather, sisters and uncle to be a vocal minority for the Cardinals when they played the Mets. But he never earned the nickname Cardinal Bob.

His most important nickname was Bank of America Bob, his parents said, because he lived for his job as a margins clerk. As the son of an electrician from Sayreville, N.J., Mr. Hughes started dreaming of a job on Wall Street when he was a freshman at Sayreville War Memorial High School. "He loved the whole lifestyle," said his father, Robert Hughes Sr. "He loved the excitement of that business world, the money, the way they dress, everything. That's all he ever wanted to do."

Mr. Hughes attended Montclair State University but was so eager to begin working on Wall Street that he started at the Bank of America in the World Trade Center five months before graduation. For those months he took his remaining two classes at night while living with an aunt, Kathy Hughes, in Lyndhurst, N.J.

After graduating, he moved back with his parents and began his schedule of waking up at 5:30 a.m. and arriving home at 7 p.m., or later if he went out with friends. He liked living at home, but had other plans. "He mentioned that he would like to get an apartment in New York," said his mother, Louise Hughes, "because he insisted he was going to make it big."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on March 24, 2002.

Robert Hughes, 23, put others' lives first

Robert J. "Bobby" Hughes Jr. spent most of his high school summers in Sayreville, volunteering at a camp for children with brain injuries.

On Sept. 11, when the first plane hit the World Trade Center North Tower, where Mr. Hughes worked on the 83rd floor, he stayed to help a woman having trouble on the stairs.

"Only three from his office didn't get out. Bobby and another guy were helping an old woman. They were the only three," said Mr. Hughes' father, Robert Hughes Sr.

Just after the plane hit the North Tower, Mr. Hughes' mother called him at his office. "He said, 'Ma, I got to go. We got to evacuate,'" the father recalled.

People who worked with the younger Mr. Hughes at the Bank of America office called the family in the days following the attack, saying they saw their son as he was reaching the bottom floor of the tower.

Co-workers asked Mr. Hughes if he needed help, but he said "I'm all right," the father recalled. "Then they said they saw all this debris coming down, and that was the last he was seen," Robert Sr. said.

The family will hold a memorial service for the 23-year-old Mr. Hughes at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, in the Parlin section of Sayreville.

Mr. Hughes was born in Jersey City, but the family moved to Sayreville when he was just 1 year old. He was the oldest of four children and the only son.

Mr. Hughes played several sports, but baseball was his favorite, his father said.

Mr. Hughes played shortstop for the varsity team at Sayreville War Memorial High School, and for the American Legion team in the summer league.

His favorite professional team was the St. Louis Cardinals, and he and his father made annual trips to see them play against the Phillies in Philadelphia and the Mets at Shea Stadium, his father said.

Through the end of high school and through college Mr. Hughes delivered weekly newspapers and worked at a catering hall, a bagel shop and an appliance store.

Mr. Hughes wanted to be a broker, like his uncle, Patrick Ambrosia, and applied for a job at the Bank of America before completing his business degree at Montclair State University.

Mr. Hughes was hired by Bank of America as a margin clerk in August 2000, and left the office early two days each week to attend classes, until he graduated in December, his father recalled.

"He loved that job," Robert Hughes Sr. said. The son was working on 57th Street in Manhattan until about four months ago, when the company moved to the World Trade Center.

Mr. Hughes also is survived by three sisters, Shanin, Leigha and Lyndsey; his maternal grandparents, Patrick and Charlotte Ambrosia of Old Bridge; and his paternal grandfather, Raymond Hughes of Sayreville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army to assist people in need following the Sept. 11 attacks.

I knew Bobby from when I used to work with him at my summer job at Circuit City in Wayne NJ. He used to work in the warehouse area where we stored our merchandise. He was BY FAR the nicest and most pleasant person who worked there - everybody agreed, because he was always very positive and smiling and NEVER negative - not once. He was just always smiling, and had a really great smile. We joked with him that he should do toothpaste commercials. He would come out to the customer service and chat with me and Delfi Oratel when it was slow, and I remember him always wearing his black back support brace. In June of 2001, we were working together, and I remember him saying how he was "very excited" to be taking an upcoming position at Bank Of America dealing with mortgages. We were sad to hear of him leaving us for greener pastures, but since I wanted to get into finance also, I asked him if he could help me get an internship when I graduated in two years and he said "absolutely." I found out he was a 9/11 victim when I went to work for Christmas break several months later in December. I was told that he had made it down to the lobby when the tower collapsed. It was very upsetting to hear. A few years later, I came cross a photo of him with his name on it - hanging on a random tree in Zuccotti park. I took a photo of it, and told my friends that I knew him. Rest in Peace Bobby.

Bobby, we only met once, but I remember how nice and funny you were, and your smile, it always sticks in my head. I was so sad to hear that you passed away in 9/11. I always listen for your name every anniversary. I wish I could have gotten to hang out with you more and know you more! God Bless You always, maybe one day I'll see you again in Heaven.

My name is Emily Geter. I visited NYC with my family this past May. As we were walking around the pools, I noticed a white rose in the name of Robert T. Hughes, Jr.. It was beautiful and I took a picture. I included the picture in a book from my family's vacation. I did some research to see if I could learn about Bobby and I discovered this. I want you to know that I think of him often. I am a teacher, and I showed my students this book today and his picture. I told my students about your son. I pray for you all on this day and every day.

He will always be a part of everyone . I remember that day when we got the call about bobby . Everyone's heart stopped that day it didn't seem real . But as time went on we still remember . He is shinning down on his sisters and his mom and dad ..

I never met Bobby, but I feel I know him because I know his parents and taught his sister Lyndsey. There are no perfect words of comfort. As a person who loves her job (teaching reading), I can say that I am happy Bobby loved his job. Many people who work multiple decades can never say that. I will never forget.

you are truly mised Bobby

I had only worked at Bank of America for a few weeks on September 11th and while i knew Bobby I unfortunately did not get to know him well. But my impressions of him are consistent with the views of others - bright, personable, thoughtful, caring. The world was a better place with him in it.

As we approach the 11th anniversery of that horrific day....I can't help but remember that kid I coached my first year as Freshman baseball coach at Sayreville HS......As a 23 year old baby sitter of 14 year olds it was not easy......but I will never forget Bobby's infectous smile and mature attitude he always had. He was such a wonderful kid in 1992!! I only coached for 2 years....but he indeed touched my life.....and even 11 years later it is still agonizing that he is gone.......My heartfelt sympathies to the Hughes family....

As a tribute this year I chose to honor Bobby on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. So saddened by your loss Bobby, and knowing the devastation to your family, no words I could say could ever replace the sorrow in one's heart. I'm sure your mom still wears your picture around her neck, as by all rights she should. You are a hero Bobby for worrying about your fellow co-workers, or you probably would be alive today. You will always be remembered by my family, as my daughter, Jennifer Newsome, was awarded the first scholarship honored in your name on her graduation in 2002. Rest in Peace, your courage, strength and love for life will never be forgotten.

I now have a face to remind me of this tragic day that will forever live in my heart.

Bobby, I know it's been a long time, but I came across this guest book and I wanted to let you know I think about you and your family all the time, even though our friendship was short lived. You were an AMAZING person and for some reason, you wanted somewhere else. Anyway, we shared a lot of common music and movie interests which led to a lot of laughs!!!! Anyway, You know who I am, just wanted to let you know you're an awesome person and often thought about. xoxo

Bobby- I miss you. Not too long ago I prayed to you asking you to please forgive me for not visiting your grave and not keeping in touch with your family like I would have liked to. I asked that if you forgive me to please visit me in my dreams. The next night I dreamt of you. Given you knew me very well, I knew you would understand and I thank you for that confirmation. I wish I could be different at handling situations like this but it's very hard for me. But I do want you to know how often you and your family are on my mind and how much you are missed.

I am so lucky that I got to know you on levels that sometimes two people never get to. You are someone that people will never forget. You will always be thought about, always be missed and always be loved. I am proud of you. I didn't think you could turn your back on someone and that day just proved the person we all knew you to be. You are a hero, Bobby, and you are missed very much.

Mr and Mrs Hughes & Family- I am so sorry. Please know I think of you often. You are in my thoughts & my prayers, always.

Though I did not know Bobby as a friend, I do remember his big personality from high school. As a classmate of Leigha's, I just want to say that I am so sorry for your family's loss. On September 11, 2006, I signed the banner at ground zero near his name and thanked him for his heroic sacrifice. I will light a candle tonight in his name along with others who passed on that day. I hope that you can find some kind of comfort in knowing that your son and brother is kept in the hearts of many. God bless.

It has taken 3 years for me to review the list of all of the victims of 9/11 because I had already lost 9 friends. I took the time to review it in honor to let them know, we did not forget and I wanted to make sure there was no one else I may have known.

I came across Bobby's name, clicked on the link and saw his picture to confirm who I thought it was. My heart just went very heavy.

I went to school with him and his sister Shannon. Shannon and I were friendly, we never stayed in touch, but I wanted to let the family know they are in my prayers. I have one fond and respected memory of Bobby...as you can see from the other comments he was a good person with a good heart.

I had some troubles with kids in school and one time the kids took all of my books and knocked them out of my hands. Bobby came right up to me and picked them all up and looked at the kids and told them to grow up and to leave me alone already. He smiled and went on down the hallway. We were not friends but if he was hanging out with the some of his friends I knew, he always made the attempt to say hello and to make me comfortable instead of ignoring me.

In today’s world, teenagers tend to be nasty and carry no respect for others at times. Bobby was a very popular kid in high school but did not abuse it. He had nothing but respect for others.

Both Shannon and Bobby were great and caring kids. Their parents should be very proud. I am proud of having the chance to know both of them.

To Bobby's parents: I am very sorry for your loss. It is such a shame he lost his life so early. I always had a lot of respect for your children. As a mother now, I could not even imagine the pain you will carry forever. Shannon, you are also in my prayers. I pray for your strength. Bobby is looking out for you as he did for me. If something should fall out of your hands, just think of your loving brother and let him know I will never forget him and all of the victims.

My heart and prayers go out to you today, tomorrow and forever.

Bobby may you rest in peace and stand above us proud. You made one great impacted memory on me; I cannot imagine how many others are out there. As my son gets older, I will let him know someone like you with your respect and great heart will only lead him to make great memories onto others, just like Bobby Hughes did.

I have been donating money to the St. Judes foundation for years now helping Children with cancer. Part of the donations will carry in a loving and respected memory of Bobby and my other 9 friends.

Thank you Bobby, you made my day that one day. I really did not have too many of those during High School. If and when I should drop something from now on, I will let you know I respect and pray for you and your family.

Shannon, this thank you also extends out to you. Thank you for being so kind to me also in High School.

Bobby, rest in peace now. You may have been young but you made your mark in the hearts of others and mine.

Thank you for being "our" hero.

I have visited here before, Bobby worked with my godson Anthony Christophersen. Both helped others that day, Anthony spoke with Bobby as they worked their way down the stairs, and remembers their mutual expressions of admiration for each other. Anthony made it out by seconds. When he related his story to me, I knew I would remember this young man forever. I have since read many tributes here and at other sites, and even at site of The Trade Center. His family can be justifiably be proud.

Today is 21 months since the attack. It can be 21 centuries, I will never forget the sacrifice Bobby and the other victims made that day. Rest in Eternal Peace.

I came across this guestbook when I was writing a paper about heroes for my English class. I worked with Bobby for several years at St. Clements and came to know just how great of a person he was. Bobby never failed to bring a smile to my face, or the face of anyone for that matter, he was able to lighten to mood no matter what the situation was. He was always willing to go the extra mile for anyone, whether it was helping me with my high school economics class, or giving me a ride home, he was always willing show he cared. In the four years that I worked with him I looked up to Bobby, not only as a person but as a worker. He did his job just as he lived his live, with pride. I’ll never forget the last night I worked with Bobby wondering if things would ever be the same, they weren’t and they never will be. He touched those of us at St. Clements just as he touched everyone he knew, we will always miss him.

God Bless you and your family Bobby, you will always be a hero in our eyes.

My sister and I worked with Bobby at St. Clement's catering hall. Bobby was one of the funniest and easy going people I have ever met. He made work fun and he made people happy. A year has gone by now and I feel like it was just yesterday. We miss him and will always remember him in our hearts.

I didn't know bobby, reading about him makes me wish I had. His 23 years graced this earth.

I did know two other lives lost that tragic day so understand the emptiness his family is feeling.

Now his wonderful smile is reaching those that knew him from heaven.

God Bless you

I had the honor of knowing Bobby Hughes. I worked at B.I.C with him and attended school with him. He was an incredible human being and this world suffers without him. Though it has been a while since seeing Bobby it does not surprise me that he would stay to help another. This is how he has always been, a tremendously giving individual. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be missed deeply.

I did not know Bobby Hughes in life, but I have been privledged to learn about him since his death. My godson, Anthony Christophersen was a co-worker of Bobby's. Anthony has told me that as he descended those 81 flights of stairs, he met Bobby and the woman he was helping down. Anthony said that the woman was a stranger to him. Anthony remembers telling Bobby that it was a great thing he was doing, helping that woman down those stairs. Bobby replied that it was a great thing he (Anthony)was doing, for he also was guiding someone ( a co-worker) down. That is Anthony's last memory of Bobby, somewhere around the 15th floor. My heart aches for his family, and although it is of little solace, I will keep his memory alive in my heart forever. He was the best America had to offer the world. May he rest in Eternal Peace.

On the eve of the 1st anniversary

of September 11th, I still cannot believe Bobby is gone.

I still think he's just away somewhere. But when the thought enters my mind that I wont see him anymore I am just besides myself with grief.. This has been the most difficult year I ever hope to experience.

I just want to say how much I miss him..........

With all my love & prayers..

A year ago this week and yet it feels as though it just happened. Bobby has made an impact on even those he didn't know, and those who didn't know him. Brave and caring, he was a true hero. God bless his family and close friends.

A terrible loss to those of us who are part of the Bank of America family. May Bobby's family and other loved ones receive comfort from the one they know as their higher power.

I Miss Bobby.

He was the type of guy you could talk to immediately, he was instantly your friend and someone you could trust. I know that without him this world is a different place, a place without his love and smile, but I know he was a person we will never truly forget or cease to miss. God Bless You Brother, you are still with us, in our hearts

I have know Bobby for over twelve years. He was was my cousin Pavle's best friend in the whole wide world. They would do anything for one another. They were like brothers. I treasure the days hanging out with Bobby, we always had a good time when he was around. I admired him so much because he was so young but had his whole life already planned out. He had a phenominal job that he loved and would always speak about. I would sit there in astonishment when he would explain to me his daily business. He was so happy and I was so proud of him. I was happy to see that there were men in this world like him. He had so much passion for life, all he ever wanted was to be the best. September 11th was a tragic day. There is not one day that goes by that I don't think of Bobby or see his face in my mind. He has touched the hearts of each and every person in my family and we miss him greatly. Our love goes out to his family for we will always be here for you.
