My late mother worked with Steven (Nicknamed "Schlager") at the world trade center in the 90's until the tragic events in 2001. I was young at the time, but I can recall my mother's joy when she would speak about Steven. The most memorable topic regarding Steven was his fun, friendly and upbeat personality. I remember my mom talking about going out to parties with "Schlager" and how they used to walk the bridges together in the city on their lunch breaks (cannot recall which bridge(s)). After listening to the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 memorial services, I am reminded that we continue to feel the loss of such impactful people. Gone but not forgotten.

I first met Steve in 1980 at Thom McCans. He reminded me of a young Jerry Lewis. He was always funny and was always the organizer, canoe trip....fishing trip....parties...etc...I was fortunate to work with him again 2 years later at JP Morgan. He was still the same. He loved giving you a “wet louie” in your ear. LoL. After I left Morgan I never saw Steve again. I was stunned to hear ten years after 9/11 that Steve died that day. I was further saddened to see the beautiful family he left behind in the pictures I saw later, but was happy to see he lived life to the fullest to the very end and wasn’t cheated. Whether it was spending time with family, skiing, or shaving his head at a Halloween party! Rest In Peace Steve....you were one in a million! Brian Conlon

Steve,
We caught the train into Hoboken each day and if I was lucky enough, I saw you for laughs on the way home to the Radburn station in Fairlawn. I enjoyed hearing about your growing family and Monday morning stories about skiing and mountain biking upstate. I miss guys like you, and Steve Patterson. You both were gems and are missed.
God bless,

Another anniversary... I used to work with Steve at Morgan Guaranty Trust on Wall Street for a few years in the early 80s - before he made it big. I left Morgan for IBM and often wonder what would have happened to me if I stayed and followed his path. Steve was a great guy - loved his laugh - we could always make each other laugh. Sorry that I did not stay in touch when I left Morgan in 1984. I was shocked to see this memorial several years after 9-11 while I was just seeing how past friends were doing. I especially love the family postings, films (his son's was special)... Still think of you often. Alan Jones

Today is the ten year anniversary of my meeting Steve. Myself and another buddy were up at Hunter Mountain, we were having lunch at Tequila's and we met Steve and his buddy from White Plains. We sat and talked about skiing and our families for hours. We exchanged business cards and phone numbers so we could get together for lunch or do some skiing. Sept. 12 when I saw the NY post with the picture of Steve on the cover, I felt like I had just lost my oldest and dearest friend only after just meeting him the one time. I hope heaven is a big ski mountain and you are skiing and telling stories about your family, God Bless.

Hi uncle Stevie, I just wanted to let you know that I love you, and although u were taken from us so quite a few years ago..I still remember all the times with you. Just recently when I watched the home movies from when I was a baby, there was a scene with you, me, and my mom in my room. I was probably close to one years old, but i remember all three of us were laughing about something. this may sound unrealistic, but i swear i remember that day, just as i remember ur famous laugh. I also remember trying to control my hysterical laughter when me dakota, devin, garrett, and sierra were all goofing around in our room in ur log cabin, and u kept coming in to yell at us to go to bed because we had to get up early the next morning to go skiing. Good times hahaha! Well, I just thought id write you a little note, although i talk to you all the time in my prayers. I look forward to seeing you again later..

Steven,
I just found out today that I am related to you. I don't know the specifics through our family tree, but 911 now as a more deeply personal meaning. I don't know if you had a wife or kids, brothers or sisters, but I pray for our family and the loss of such a young life. I will always keep you in my thoughts and will continue to speak of the 911 tragedy with a much deeper passion and will never let your name be forgotten in my life time. God willing, one day I will meet some members of your imediate family and I can get to know you along with my unknown relatives. God Bless and Keep you!

I was unaware of Steve's loss in the 9/11 attack. I was just googling his name to see how successful he was and if he still worked at Morgan (JPMorgan Chase) - where we both got our start in NYC back in 1983-4. We worked at 33 Wall Street as Custody investigators. We spent lunch down at the piers of at Battery Park. He had an outrageous sense of humor and I knew that he was destined for greatness. I left Morgan in 1984 and never di keep in touch - sorry to say. My sympathies to his family

Dear Schlag Family:
I came across a beautiful poem, which I slightly modified to speak about Steve.
God saw you offered love and friendship,
So often willingly.
He put His arms around you and whispered,
"Come and help Me".
With tearful eyes we watched in pain,
And saw you leave today.
Although we Love you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

I only met Steve Schlag once. I attended his 2000 Halloween party, at his home in NJ. I went with my boyfriend, Mike Marti. I remember Steve was dressed as Dr. Evil from Austin Powers. He even shaved his head for the event. Mike talked about Steve all the time. He lived up to all of Mike's stoires and thensome. There was a costume contest and I won 2nd place for my Catholic school Barbie costume. Steve presented me the prize of "a bottle of our finest cabernet". I had a blast at the party and met many cool people with such imaginative costumes. I am happy I was able to meet Steve and his wife that night. I want to send my sincere condolences to his family. I keep you in my prayers.

Steven, my closest cousin.
We watched in horror from my window and tried to reach you.
We remember your short but full life and your laugh...your obnoxious,
infectious laugh.
Sometimes we see you and then you're gone. It warms our hearts though
only for an instant but we remember that warmth and how it made us
feel; to see you if only in our hearts and minds.
We remember your life and how you lived it. To the fullest. We see you in your kids and remember how much you adored your family.
A year later we cannot believe you are gone and though you may laugh at
us, we miss you deeply.
I know you and my dad and our grandmothers look out for us. We can feel it. I love you all.
Your sap of a cousin.

Dear Steve:
I always knew since we were kids, that you would grow up and become a model citizen, friend, son, brother, husband, and father - the essence of a great person and great American.
Your wonderful parents and sisters are evidence that your upbringing would ensure your success in having all these fine attributes.
As I read through the other guests' comments, it seems you have given much of yourself and touched many lives with your spirit.
I want to thank you for bringing joy, laughter and friendship to my childhood years. As I recall those days (over 30 years ago), I still smile the biggest smile, and am glad you were there.
I will never forget you.

America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
