Thomas Schoales Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2001.
Competitive Baby Brother

Tommy Schoales landed at Engine Company 83 in the Bronx as a novice firefighter. A low-key one, too, everybody thought. That was before they experienced his competitive streak. He'd dash into the fire truck when the alarm rang because there was a prize: controlling the hose at the fire. "Here, if you get to the back step first, you take the nozzle," said Michael Scanlon, who worked alongside him. "And it was hard to beat him to the back step. He was always there."

He fought flames in the tenements of Mott Haven and responded to alarms from Randalls Island. He bunked in Stony Point, N.Y., with a battalion chief — his father, Edward. To his five siblings, he was the much-loved baby brother who danced at their weddings and treated their children to the batting cage. And to the older firefighters he was the kid who worked hard and came up with well-timed pranks, like balancing water balloons in the rafters so that a fire engine backing in would dislodge them, spraying everyone around.

After that first year, he was assigned to Engine Company 4, at the southern tip of Manhattan. But his heart remained with Engine 83, said his brother Eddie. He went to their picnics and played on their basketball team. At 27, he had found the firehouse where he wanted to stay. "He fit the typical mold of a good fireman," Firefighter Scanlon said. "He was looking forward to coming back."

I purchased a copper bracelet from Macy's right after the 9/11 attacks. Each bracelet had the name of one of the heroes that died that day. My bracelet had the name Thomas Schoales. He was on Engine 4 and died in the World Trade Center that day. I signed a memorial on Legacy.com and some of his family contacted me. I was so touched. His brother named a new baby after Thomas!.
They all must never be forgotten. RIP Thomas Schoales, you truly are a hero.

Just wanted to reach out to the friends and family of Thomas, and let you know that I honored Thomas at the 9/11 memorial stair climb here in Denver, on 9-11-14, climbing the 110 floors of stairs here in Denver. 343 firefighters and dept members made the climb, each of us wearing a picture and name tag of a fallen firefighter, in remembrance of the sacrifices made by all the firefighters on 9-11. Dear Thomas & family,

I was cleaning out my jewelery drawer tonight and came across a silver bracelet that I purchased shortly after 9/11. At the time, I didn't know whose name I would get, but wanted to contribute. I received a bracelet with your name and was honored to wear it. Over the years, I have tucked you away into my drawer but have never forgotten your name. Currently, the bracelet is on my wrist and my thoughts are of 9/11 and the horror that you must have gone through. I will wear this bracelet and think of you...even though we never met. My best to your family and hope that they remember great memories of you.

September 11, 2009

Tommy -
I never had the chance to meet you - you sound like an incredible man. Today I climbed in your honor in the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb in Denver, CO. 343 of us climbed 110 stories - each wearing a picture of one of you that made the ultimate sacrifice. I had the honor of climbing in your honor. You will not be forgotten.

September 11, 2009

I still wear a simple copper bracelet that bears your name on this 8th anniversary of your sacrifice. It's edges are worn sharp, and occasionally it cuts... and I'll jokingly say it's the brothers reminding me they're still there. You are remembered and missed in the hearts of all the lives you touched.

This is not the first time I tried to write . It took a long time because what can someone say about a person like you . I can start by saying Thank You .You were a true hero . A special person with a gentle easy going nature who people loved and loved to be around . At Danny's wedding you did'nt need a laugh track but I would have volunteered because you were hilarious . The pain of your loss will never go away , but I hope some comfort can be found in believing you are in a better place because that is something you truly deserve . Take care Tommy , Rest in Peace .
