Jeffrey Schreier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2001.
Adversities Conquered
On Sept. 11, Jeffrey Schreier pushed a mail cart out of the Church Street post office. It was 7 a.m. No time to chat, he told the counterman. He had to get to the Cantor Fitzgerald mailroom. (Mr. Schreier was rarely late in his 19 years as a messenger and mailroom employee there.)

On Sept. 11, Mr. Schreier was a happy man. And he was a successful man, brilliantly so. He was married, quietly but happily, to Phyllis. They lived a simple life in her apartment in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. "Taking a walk on the boardwalk, or seeing a movie, or seeing a sports game on television, was enough to make him incredibly happy," said his sister, Janice Hart.

He made others happy with his imitations (Shemp of the Three Stooges was a specialty) and his dazzling dancing at Cantor holiday parties. Winter was his favorite season, but his personality was like the summer. Maybe the only dark spot was not being able to have children.

Mr. Schreier was brilliantly successful because he had conquered the severe learning disabilities he was born with, unable even to feed himself as a child. But his parents, Holocaust survivors, sent him away to a special school, and he learned to take care of himself. He had a knack for getting from one place to another, hence the messenger job. "He was so self-sufficient and so independent," Mrs. Hart said. "He wanted to prove to people he could do everything himself."

Then, a wonderful achievement: he earned his high school equivalency diploma. "Next to getting married, that was the greatest thing in his life," Mrs. Hart said.

It hangs, laminated, in a quiet living room.

Hi Jeff! Wanted to stop by your guest book and say that I want to believe that the misspelling of your name on the memorial is a sign that your spirit is not only strong but that your great sense of humor is still shinning through as bright as ever. You must have had a way about standing out in a crowd.

Jeffrey, It is 2003 and you have been gone from those who love you what seems to be only yesterday...because you have left an invisible imprint on the lives of those you knew. You have strived to reach your goal and you did it. What a powerful impact that must be to everyone. I am so sorry that you were taken away in that horrible and senseless act of September 11, 2001. My heart is filled with grief for all of you who lost your earthly lives in such a horrific manner. The Lord now holds a beautiful angel...you, Jeffrey Schreir. He has gained and those whom you love are lost without you, but your memory sustains them. Please know that you will never be forgotten, not by any of us.To your loved ones, I send my sympathy.

My prayers for you and your family are unending.

Father we entrust our brother Jeffrey to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Jeffrey Schreier, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I did not know you or anyone else who passed away that horrible day last September. I am so sorry that so many wonderful people where killed. I do not understand the kind of hate that can do this kind of thing. May You rest in peace and may God watch over the family and friends that you left behind.

To Jeff's wife and family,

My heart cries for you on the loss of such a special person. I have a sister who is trying to overcome similar obstacles that Jeff overcame and while it causes me such pain to hear about his untimely passing, I am smiling none the less at the fulfilling life he seems to have lead.

May his memory be blessed.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
