See-Wong Shum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2001.
See-Wong Shum, 44, adventurer in life Since Sept. 11, Rebecca Shum has adopted a vegetarian diet and started chanting Buddhist prayers. It is these religious rituals that help Shum cope with the loss of her husband, See-Wong Shum, who announced a week before the World Trade Center attacks that he was converting to Buddhism.

He made this decision after spending endless hours in the public library exploring texts about Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism.

"If I'm chanting, I feel like I'm connected with him somehow," said Shum, who was not affiliated with any religious group before the terrorist attacks. "Somehow I feel like if I do something for him in the practice of Buddhism, I think that's all I can do for him."

Mr. Shum, 44, was on the 82nd floor of One World Trade Center when a hijacked airliner crashed into the building. The Westfield resident managed computer systems for New York Metropolitan Transportation Council and reportedly answered phones amid the chaos of that Tuesday morning.

Rebecca Shum did not get a chance to talk to her husband one last time. However, when she returned home that day after dropping their 3-year-old daughter Chanel off at nursery school, there was a message on the answering machine. There were no voices on the message, just the sound of wailing sirens in the background.

"I bet that might've been him," she said.

Mr. Shum was a restless spirit who was always seeking new adventures. Raised in Hong Kong, Mr. Shum worked as a high school teacher, corrections officer and suicide hotline counselor. During his free time, he backpacked through Europe, China, Israel, Peru, Egypt and Thailand.

It was in Thailand where Mr. Shum was first exposed to Buddhism and meditated in a temple for the first time. He felt at peace there and wondered if he was a Thai monk in a previous life. But years would pass before he announced that he was Buddhist.

"Maybe he knew that something would happen to him," Shum said.

After numerous career changes, Mr. Shum finally settled on a computer-related job and started working at the transportation council nine years ago. He rarely missed a day of work -- taking off only to tend to his wife or children if they were sick.

These days, the couple's 6-year-old son, Leon, is having problems sleeping and is disturbed by nightmares he has of a monster carrying a bomb. He insists he's feeling better, but he cannot sleep unless the lights are on in his bedroom.

"I think so far he is handling it good, considering his age," Shum said.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Methodist Church, East Broad Street, Westfield.

In addition to his wife, son and daughter, Mr. Shum is survived two sisters, Christina Shum and Sandy Shum of Hong Kong, and his parents, Soo-Chu Cheng and Ching-Ho Shum of Hong Kong.

Donations can be made to the See-Wong Shum Family Relief Fund, P.O. Box 144, Garwood, N.J. 07027-0144.

Once again, I changed my social media profiles to pictures of See-Wong Shum. And once again, it got a lot of questions, to which I gladly answered about the life of Mr. Shum. This afternoon I will be airing a brief radio special about him on the station I work for in Knoxville. It's not much, but if it helps keep his memory alive, it's worth it.
Till next year,

It's me again, Mr. Shum. Ever since someone handed me a candle and a slip of paper with your name and photograph on the one year anniversary of your death, I've made a point to think of you. Knowing you were an avid outdoorsman, I carry your memory with me when I go backpacking. Peace be with you, See-Wong. I will never forget.

Hello my My name is Alan Rieansnider, and I am a senior at Klein High School in Klein, Tx. For a research project, I am creating a tribute to honor someone close to the September 11, 2001 tragic events at The World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93. I have chosen to honor See-Wong Shum with my tribute.

My deepest condolences to family and friends. I am sure that the memory of the event is quite painful, so if you prefer not to participate as a source in my research, please know that I understand completely.

I am looking for any information regarding his interests. I would also appreciate any pictures you could share of See-Wong Shum as well. Please include, too, any memorable stories about him, details of his job, family, friends, accomplishments, and personality.

Thank you very much for spending the time to read this, once again my deepest condolences.

I wore a bracket today in memory of those lost in the tragedy of 9/11. See Wong Shum was the name placed on my arm by our student counsil. I did not wear his name lightly or without regard to the family that has suffered such loss. I will hold you in my thoughts and prayers as we stop and remember this 10th year of this great tragedy. God bless your family during this time.

Today Justice was served. The man who coordinated the attacks that took you life has been killed.
As Mark Twain once wrote, "I’ve never wished a man dead. But, I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."
I can't say I never wanted Bin Laden dead, but now that he is, I know this will never bring See-Wong back.
My candle still burns for you, Mr. Shum. Your memory lives on, and I will never forget!

Tonight at a ceremony in downtown Knoxville remembering the events of 9/11 last year, citizens were given an American flag, a candle, and the name of one of the victims from the disaster.

I was handed the name of See-Wong Shum. Having never heard this name or known this man before, I lit my candle and held it in his memory. After geting home, I searched the name, and found this tribute site and guestbook. I also learned a little about See-Wong Shum and who he was - a computer working, backpacking, father of two, just like me.

Tonight he was remembered by a total stranger in a city over 700 miles away...And will not be forgotten.

I wish all the best to See-Wong Shum's wife, children, family and friends.

Sincerely,

Kevin D. Summitt

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
