Thomas Kuveikis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2001.
Lovable and Complicated

Tommy K. was a fine carpenter, so the guys happily let him build a steam room in Squad 252's firehouse.

Tommy K. was also a fine cook, but the guys almost body-blocked him from the kitchen: not tofu and vegetables, again, man, please!

Thomas Kuveikis, 44, was a lovable bundle of contradictions: a rescue firefighter devoted equally to his job in clamorous Brooklyn and to a secluded home on a dirt road in tiny Kent Cliffs, N.Y.

A strapping vegetarian and environmentalist who joked with his carnivorous buddies. A first-rate slob as a kid (an excavation of his teenage room would uncover the hardtop of a Triumph and a tank full of dead fish) who, said his sister, Chris Peschel, became a Mr. GQ as an adult, impeccably turned out — and were those highlights in your hair, Tommy K?

Two marriages went south, but he spent vacations with his daughter, Kristen.

He was a big-hearted soft touch, the favorite uncle-as-overgrown kid, and an awful businessman when it came to his carpentry jobs. But as a firefighter, he was unusually aggressive. His father, Capt. Peter Kuveikis, "was a legendary tough guy," said a firefighter, "and Tommy K. was on his way to becoming a legend himself."

I purchased a 9/11 memorial flag with Thomas's name on it. I wanted the family to know that I fly the flag proudly with his name still on the card. I never knew him but your family is in our thoughts today as we all reflect back on the sacrifice that he and many others made that tragic day. God Bless Thomas and his family and friends.

I laid flowers for you again this year, and sadly for my Chuck who has joined your ranks. I will tell the crew at LP about you tonight so your contribution continues to be part of the legacy and memory. Your beloved Land Trust is thriving, but I'm sure you know that and probably had a little something to do with its success. Miss you Tom. Today and always.

Tommy, 17 years have passed and still, on yet another sad anniversary of this tragic day, you're the first hero that comes to mind. I'm sure you know that all of our Blessed Sacrament classmates think of your heroic, selfless act as part of who you were & we were privileged with the blessing of being your friend in those happy times. God Bless your family always. We will never forget.

I didn't know Thomas but my mother Laurie and father Craig knew him very well. I was named after his daughter Kristen in 1989. Not that it means much to many it means a lot to me. He seemed like a down to earth kind of guy and my mom and dad always tell me stories about him. I could only imagine what it was like growing up with him and I'm sorry for your loss.

A MESSAGE TO MY BROTHER TOM (IN HEAVEN)-- YOU ARE THE BEST BROTHER, FATHER, SON, UNCLE,COUSIN, NEPHEW,FIREFIGHTER,AND MOST OF ALL, HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER KNOWN. YOU BROUGHT SO MUCH JOY TO EVERYONE AROUND YOU--YOUR WINNING SMILE AND PERSONALITY, SENSE OF HUMOR, COMPASSION, HONESTY AND INTEGRITY (AND NOT TO MENTION,YOUR GOOD LOOKS WHICH BROKE MANY WOMEN'S HEARTS).

THE LOSS/PAIN DOESN'T GET ANY EASIER FOR ME PERSONALLY--I ONLY JUST LEARN TO DEAL WITH YOUR TRAGIC LOSS--WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE? YOU ARE MY GUARDIAN ANGEL, HOWEVER, I ONLY WISH I COULD REACH OUT AND TALK TO YOU, BUT I CAN'T, SO I HAVE TO JUST TELL MYSELF YOU ARE WATCHING OVER ALL OF US.

TO THIS DAY I ASK MYSELF, AS I AM SURE MANY OTHERS DO, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO UNSELFISH AND RISK YOUR LIFE? BUT THE ANSWER I GET IS THAT IS THE PERSON YOU WERE--WHICH IS WHAT MADE YOU AN AMAZING FIREFIGHTER-JUST LIKE DAD.

I HAVE SO MANY WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF YOU AND OUR FAMILY--I ONLY WISH THERE WOULD BE MORE TO SHARE.

YOU ALWAYS GAVE ME THE STRENGTH AND COURAGE TO DO THINGS, AND FOR THAT I AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL. I CARRY YOUR PICTURE WITH ME EVERYDAY AND WHEN THINGS GET ROUGH, I LOOK AT YOU AND SAY WHAT WOULD TOM DO? SOMETIMES THERE ARE NO ANSWERS OR SIGNS, BUT I HAVE TO BELIEVE YOU ARE THERE IN SPIRIT.

WHY DID GOD TAKE SUCH A PERSON AS YOURSELF AND IN A HORRIFIC WAY! I DO HOPE YOU DID NOT SUFFER.

ON THIS 9/11 ANNIVERSARY (ANY ALL THE ANNIVERSARIES), NONE OF US WILL EVER FORGET YOUR UNSELFISH ACT OF HEROISM. HOPEFULLY, MORE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WILL BE LIKE YOU -- A RARE GEM, A GREAT HUMANATARIAN, AND MY AMERICAN IDOL.

THANKS FOR BEING THE AWESOME BROTHER YOU WERE TO ME. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, BUT WILL ALWAYS MISS YOU.

YOUR SISTER - KATH

FYI--GRAHAM PARKER, LUCINDA WILLIAMS AND ALL YOUR OTHER FAVES SENT THEIR LOVE AND THANKS TO YOU!

Someone else said it in here the best -that this very bad day comes back every year. Tommy, my classmate, reaches my heart and makes me sad, but I am reminded what a privilege it was to have shared my childhood school years in his company. I speak for all of our Blessed Sacrament classmates of 1967 when I say how fond of him we were and very proud of what he did to help others. God Bless his family and all those who suffered pain and loss on September 11, 2001.

I will never get over 9/11 and I literally HATE HOW IT JUST COMES BACK every year. But apparently, there is just no fighting it, it is a forever.

So... there were 3 FDNY's on my street and I was out of Town. This one was two doors down. The others were home, safe and accounted for - he was missing. He was headed home from his shift when the planes hit, and turned back, never to be seen or heard from again. He was a very special person, and no one even knows how he helped me - a nobody at the time - when Putnam Valley was in the biggest fight of her life. RIP Tom!

I first met Tommy back when 175 was a single house on New Jersey Avenue. There was absolutely no doubt there was something special about Tommy… or Special K as he was fondly called by some of the guys. His walk, his look, swagger if you will, all in done subconsciously in way that set him apart. Tommy would take great pride at a job… to be the first one in, and last one out, with the dirtiest face. He was very very good at what he did. Most everyone looked up to him. I liked to call him my friend, and what was really unusual, everyone, every fireman I ever spoke with about Tommy, felt Tommy was their friend. Everyone. That is stunning. No one else can have that said about him. Although we spent many tours together on the job, and there are countless stories of Tommy at fires, I will add something different. Some of my most vivid memories of Tommy were spent on side jobs, one in particular, rebuilding the massive forty-foot guitar bar at the original Hard Rock Café in NYC. The Hard Rock management gave us Jimmy Hendrix’s original Strat and we were told to match the sunburst color exactly. We drove to a body shop in Queens that had a computer to match the colors, and Tommy sat in the front seat of the van while I drove and he was strumming Hendrix’s guitar, telling me about the wonderful town of Bayville he lived in. If every fireman who ever worked with Tommy told a story about him, it would max out this wonderful website dedicated to Tommy Kuveikis.

Tommy, I will forever miss your smile.

To my Brother Tom:
When I did my tribute to you this past 9/11/11, I felt so proud to speak about you. What I said about you truly came from the heart. The one thing that is so vivid to me is the last words you said to me -- "I am just joking with you Kath -- you know how much I love you -- you are the best." It brings tears to me eyes when I think back. I am just so glad those were the last words I heard from you.
Being your youngest sister has not only been a priveledge, but an honor. Words could never describe how much I miss you. You were ALWAYS there for Don and I. How can I forget those great vacations we took to Acapulco, especially the one with me, Don, you, Kristen and Keri. That was probably one of the best vacations I ever had!! And of course, there was Yolanda, who made it even better. God rest her soul!!She always wanted to "hook" up with you.She used to say Tom is soo good looking and sweet, with her Spanish accent.
When it came to the family, you always took care of Dad when he wasn't in the best of health -- even though you were "dog tired" after working at the Firehouse for 72 hrs, and then, you would drive up to Carmel - almost a 2 hr ride - to your home after spending most of the day with Dad. To me, there is NO ONE in the world who compares to you. Mom and Dad would be so proud of you. They always had faith you in. They did a great job raising you.

Your charm, good looks, winning smile and personality were only part of who you were. It was your heart and soul which made you the person you had become -- a true humanitarian -- a noble and heoic man -- a great firefighter-- a man I am so proud to say was my brother and my best friend.
I can only speak for myself when I say it NEVER gets easier -- I just learn to deal with it because I can not change the fact that you are no longer here. Your picture sits on my desk at work next to a photo of your daughter, Kristen. I look at it every day and try to remember the good times we have all had as a family. Your entire family loves you dearly. You will never be forgotten.
See you one day on the other side -- your sister Kath

he took me when i was 16 to the Anchorage tavern in roslyn, took me to a hot tuna concert in brooklyn that started at 1:00 am. he was at his soul a good person. i moved to atlanta 32 years ago but remember my time with him as if it was yesterday.

I remember Tom "Las Vegas" Kuveikis as the coolest guy in our class, and a very good friend. Tom had a magnetic personality, and of course had the starring role in our high school movie project "Born to Be Wild...Starring Wheatley's Wildest Cats". He was also in our Sha La La music group, and was the only one of us who actually looked good in gold lame. I guess you can take the boy outta Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn outta the boy. He returned to Brooklyn to do what he loved, helping others, and he left this world what he always was, a hero. We are forever grateful for his courage, kindness, and heroism.

Tom,

We had to tear down all your hard work in the basement on Yale a couple of weeks ago because of a water leak...and there, behind the paneling, was your handiwork with your great nicknames for me and Andrew...we all still miss you, and we are happy to have so many memories of you. It's impossible to explain to people how you were like our older brother for so many years. It brought joy and pain to see the writings on the wall. Seeing the now unfinished basement (again unfinished!) I remember when you ran across to the paint store to get something and my grandfather cut the wires to your boombox because you left it on while you were gone and he couldn't find the off switch! One of the funniest times...that was. We all still love and miss you and are richer for having known you. I am always sorry that my boys never got the chance to spend time with you.

Love
Vicki

Tommy,

It's been a while but I also listen intently for your name to be read each year. I only try to think of the great times we had in school and I laugh as if I was still in 8th grade again. I also know that the hundreds of masses we served together at Blessed Sacrament on the same altar boy team are now paying dividends!

Tommy,
I don't want to exaggerate and say that I think of you EVERY day but there are so many days that I do. Many times it has to do with a song on the radio. I guess that's because you introduced me to so much rock/pop music!! Of course, you had other (bad and good) influences on me as well. Since it is more than five years since that terrible day, I guess that the tears that are flowing down my face now are here to stay with me until I see you once again. You've touched so many lives, including mine, and I miss you terribly.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Rest in peace Tommy, you were a great fireman, friend, and all around Great guy. I will allways remember you.

Nancy Koenig

September 11, 2006

Tom,

I don't know if you'll remember me, but you worked on my mom's house a number of years ago. You were a FDNY brother of my own brother, Steve Koenig. I was in college at the time, and was very impressed by the music you played while you worked. You pretended to be equally impressed by the coffee I made one day, and drank it politely. Later on, I tasted it myself and realized it was awful. I can't believe you drank it! You were outside my house most of that summer and we shared many laughs. You also used to calm me down after the adolescent arguments I used to get into with my mom. Thanks for that. And no, we don't argue like that anymore. I learned a lot of lessons on 9/11; we all did.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I think of you often, not only on 9/11, but of course, always on this day. I learned a lot about you at the memorial service years ago, and realized that the older version of myself has a lot in common with you. I think we would have been very close friends, in another time and place.

I learned to surf in 2002. I went out on 9/11 a few years ago, on a day that I didn't belong in the water. After several dangerous wipeouts, I got out, sat on the beach, defeated, and talked to you. I told you I knew the conditions were beyond my abilities but that I really wanted to catch one wave in your honor. I asked you to help and promised to get out immediately afterwards. I went back in, determined, all traces of my fear gone, because I knew you were with me.

Sure enough, I rode the biggest and best wave I've ever caught to date. Yes, all these years and increased skills later, and I still haven't topped that ride. Thank you, Tom.

I miss you. Steve misses you. As destroyed as he was from 9/11, he has slowly healed - not entirely of course - but enough to live again. You wouldn't believe it, but he is now not only married, but aslo has twin boys, Darren and Brandon! I'm sure you had something to do with leading him to Lorena, the most wonderful woman I could ever have imagined for him. I hope your loved ones are all healing as well, and my thoughts and prayers are always with them.

I will write again, Tom. Thank you for being a hero.

Tom:

Tears are flowing, I am crying again. I will always remember your willingness to give. That special sense of humor. Such a shock that day. Visions of you going up. You helped redefine my notion of hero. Please know how many of us love you.

To Tommy's family,

It had been many years since I had spent time with or talked with Tommy but he was a great friend and brother/father figure when I needed him most, in my late teens.

I'm 33 now and I think of him every day and am grateful to have known him. I'll never forget him. He truly is a hero. God Bless.

Tom:

I remember when you moved to Long Island from Brooklyn for High School. You were a tough city kid with a heart of gold. We became friends that summer and had lots of good times throughout high school and beyond. You had the lead role in my senior project comedy film, a natural actor. We spent a summer in Daytona Beach building, surfing, and chasing women. You were a great friend, and above all an American hero.

To the loved ones and Brother Firefighters of Thomas Kuveikis:

I wanted to reach out to you to let you know that I have a mercy band with Thomas' name...he remains in my thoughts and prayers daily.

As a volunteer firefighter here in NJ I will NEVER forget the ultimate sacrifice made by my brothers and sisters in the fire service--especially the bravest of the brave, those members of the FDNY who faced certain death on 9/11 and entered the WTC anyway to try to save a stranger's life.

Now, though, I have a single person to connect to the disaster of 9/11. Thomas and his family will be in my prayers forever.

God Bless you, God bless the FDNY and God Bless the USA.

We thank Thomas for dedicating his life to help others as a firefighter. Such dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart full of love for his fellow man. May his courage, warmth, life and love continue living in those who love him. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Thomas. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Christmas Eve, 2001

Dear Thomas,

I want you to know, even though I never met you, I pray for you and the loved ones you left behind.

I believe the sky was so bright and blue on September, to make your journey to Heaven safe and peaceful. I also believe you are an Angel and share Heaven with God.

God Bless you, Thomas and may your loved ones find comfort with the thoughts and prayers that people from all over the world say in your memory and for them, as well.

Rest In Peace, Thomas!

To an old friend: Since 9-11, I have thought of the many great times we had together, the many long hours we spent talking, yet never imagining the different paths life would have in store for us. You are a hero, you will be missed, and you will be in many prayers.
