Victor Paz-Gutierrez Obituary
Victor Paz Gutierrez, 43, born in Colombia, had made the rounds of the city's restaurant kitchens before a friend helped him get a job in 1999 at Windows on the World. There, Mr. Paz Gutierrez felt at home. He was assigned to the pastry station, his hands a blur among the sugar and eggs and cream as he prepared desserts ordered by the bankers, lawyers, real estate moguls and tourists who filled the dining room high above the ground.
The air could be thick with the tension peculiar to meals where enormous sums of money are at stake. But the mustachioed man who worked unseen, fixing the sweets that followed the lobster salad and the venison chops, was an uncomplicated person, serene and secure, said his companion, Liliana R. Ospina.
He wore an easy smile as he put on his chef's uniform each day, and his soft dark eyes were always peaceful. He counted on a future that would be better than the one he expected while growing up in Colombia. "He was very practical," Ms. Ospina said. "And he was always very happy." Sundays found him playing goalie for the Windows on the World soccer team.
